Hi CG.
It has come to my attention that this year many members will be registered and active here at SG for at least ten years. That is an insane amout of time for any webpage or online forum!

While it also speaks about the important role SG plays in the life of those people, I thought to myself: This legendary feat warrants some kind of reward, does it not?

So I thought about a cosmetic fluff item to reward longstanding members for their loyalty. Kinda like Patrons got a little star.

Maybe create a new role called "OG" or something like that which shows those two letters - OG - behind their names and automatically award it to every member who is registered here for at least a decade and who is still active here.
Last part could be tracked by last login or how often someone logs into the site per week or refreshes the session cookie (since I, for example, never log out and instead refresh the site at least once a day).
No actual benefits should be attached to the role, no extra giveaways, giveaway slots, levels, nothing like that. Just a cosmetic hint to show that SG values it's members who are here for such a long time.

What do you think about that?

Good idea?

Yes.
I don't care.

called "OG"

Might wanna call it something else if the only requirement is activity and being here for 10 years, because what about when the site is 11+ years old and people who weren't here from the beginning start getting that role?

Just a cosmetic hint

Isn't that already covered by the part of users' profiles that says "registered 9 years ago" or whatever?

because what about when the site is 11+ years old and people who weren't here from the beginning start getting that role?

This would be fine for me, since I indeed meant: Everyone who is registered and active here since ten years should get this role, since ten years is a monumental time in internet terms. I not meant only for people who registered in the first year.

Of course, when SG will be 20 years old, half the userbase will have that item, which makes it useless. So then the role can be modified and the amount of time needed to get that visual fluff item could be set to 20 years or whatever.

These are all ideas and not set in stone. The most important part is pitching the idea to CG. He will refine it in a way he likes.

i like it but not as much the rule of being active. if you're active, we'll see that fluff item. if you're not (or not anymore) we're not gonna see it anyway...

my bet? cg won't do it.

but you're absolutely right when you say that 10 Internet years are a gianormous amount of time. think about it, cg!

I sort of like the idea. And it's not just because I'm gonna get my decade cakeday in a few months, I swear.
The modifications I'd make is to simplify it a bit, instead of "OG" just having a "10+" (or similar) would be more fitting, and I'd also remove the requirement of having to be active since that just adds unnecessary complexity.
Unless "OG" stands for "old gamer" then I fully support it :P

OG is just an idea, it could be whatever the community decides or CG decides :)

The active part was added because I don't want to reward accounts who registered ten years ago and left nine years ago. So no dead accounts. My idea was to really award those accounts who support the site for at least a decade.

There's no way to really do that. Someone could have opened their account 10 years ago, stayed for a month and showed up again today. Or they could be active for a few weeks out of every year. Some people might log in to give away a bunch of games and then not log back in for ages. That doesn't make them any less a member of SG. You can't measure the value of someone's contribution that way, otherwise it becomes a little bit elitist and you'll see complaints haha. You keep everyone happy by just giving a 10+ badge (or whatever) to every account that reaches the milestone. If they're not active, it doesn't matter.

BTW, I have an active forum account that is 19 years old. Will be 20 years old in August. lmao! So 10 doesn't feel that long.
I have another active one since 2009.
And I've been active in another community since 2006. But that one is now a Discord community since the forum is gone.

He could delete all accounts that not had a login in the last 3, 4 or 5 years.

But he don't want to lower the member numbers because he would, most likely, get lower ad deals.

Only if we get tagged with old fart.

10 years doesn't feel like that big of a deal to me... as I have multiple 10+ year forum accounts that I am still active on. To be fair I was inactive on SG for about 8 years(my reason for leaving came back within a month >>, oh well I can afford this problem now)

Lmao, I feel you. Still some forums out there that I visit almost 20 years later. At this age 10 years just seems cute.

10? Only 10? Pffffftttt!! Mine goes to ELEVEN!!!!

But seriously, since I would be one of the subjects of this rule (mine DOES go to 11), I abstain. :D

My account will be 12 years old soon enough. I suggest we introduce something for us even older and even more elite folks. ;)

<3

for 10 years i've just read Mayanaise idea below and love it, simple, effective, definitive.
but for your case it might truly get more complicated...

Banning won't work on us elders, you'd need a more hardcore approach. Wooden stakes or silver maybe. Sunlight definitely is effective against me, garlic not at all though.

I think once people hit 10 years, they should get a permanent ban.

Steam and Ebay accounts are twice as old. I never asked for anything. Maybe I will request a chocolate covered pretzel.

Steam's probably not a good example, as they do give "years of service" badge.

Having been registered for only 9 years and 10 months, I am naturally violently opposed to this awful idea that promotes elitism and can only serve to drive a wedge between the members of our otherwise close knit community.

In two months you'll get to see just how quickly I can change my opinion. Spoilers: it's quick.

this is better that saying 10 years

Possibly, except it doesn't differentiate people who have been here for 11+ years (still says decade).

Maybe they should say "Registered 1 decayed ago"

I'm always a fan of re/-awarding loyalty, and if it's just fluff there's no harm if there's nothing attached to it. It'll be a while till I can hit that milestone myself, but it'd be fun to see how many people have been here since that long and also been active that long.

I don't dislike this idea, however I think it should display something for every user, including day1 users, and rather than just selectively picking a group of users, it might be better to maybe in the corner by the users name display a number like 1 - 10 or 10+ whatever to match their years with different colors. Similar to maybe how steam does levels 0 - 10 or something.

Maybe like a sprout icon like FFXIV does for new users 0 - 1 year and everyone after gets a colored number based on their length with the site, like 1 blue, 2 green, etc. with like 10 or more being holographic or some other effect.

I do think promoting one single group of users and doing nothing for the rest is going to overall affect it negatively. There's people here who have 10 year accounts, but joined 2 giveaways made 0 and commented 6 times. Not exactly someone I'd find as being an OG just because they got in early and basically never used the site.

This could also be negative because if you see a post by someone who has said rep, you're more inclined to take it for granted and click a link or something, vs if a new user makes a thread, it would be more likely to be ignored or looked down upon. This would also mean more data having to be displayed every time a page is loaded, so who knows if it's seen as beneficial.
