Hi all! I've been reading this thread. I'm a newbie to buying games and bundles from sites outside of Steam (mostly from Fanatical). I always reveal my keys so that I can organize my games and keys.

Should I reveal them right after purchasing them or when I'm about to redeem them on Steam/gift them on a GA here?

As a thank you for your replies, please have this 24-hour GA (lvl 2).

When should I reveal my keys?

It doesn't matter

sometimes they run out of keys so i reveal them right away and put them all into an open office document, never ran into problems.

I always reveal and use the keys right away by either redeeming them myself or making giveaways. Unless you try to collect more stuff a for big event I have never seen the need to keep them.

I have keys from a couple of months back. I'd like to redeem the keys when I'm actually able to play the game. Or maybe I don't want a game right now, but then someone recommends it and I wanna play it. But using them right away is a good idea! Thanks!

You should be OK to hold on to those keys for a while, as long as you reveal them. Sometimes it takes a while for me to decide if I want a bundle game for myself or not, but I have yet to have an issue with a key that I had revealed right away. I have bought many hundreds of keys through Fanatical, some of which I waited several years to activate or give away.

Yes, it IS possible for a dev to revoke or reuse old keys that haven't been activated, but that is far less likely to happen than a store over-selling keys and not having any left if you wait to reveal it.

Thanks for your reply! I was getting worried when reading that thread, but I think most of the revealed keys were from HB or revoked by a certain developer. It's just that I overthink things :D My oldest keys are only a couple of months old, so I guess they're safe.

A couple of months is totally fine.

If you do know that you will play something later, you should add it and make a "play next" category so it doesn't get lost in your library. The worst thing about buying too many bundles is that you end up with too many games, and find it hard to choose what to play next haha, so yours isn't he worst strategy.

Making a "play next" category sounds good. I never thought of that!
You're right about getting too many games. Every time I open Steam, I feel like when I open Netflix. I spend about 30 minutes not knowing what to do, then I end up closing everything and doing something else, lol

Yeah, I know exactly how you feel. I used to get that paralysis whenever I would open Steam. I'd stare at my library for ages trying to decide what to play, then just ended up clicking on XCOM2 or Skyrim, or just closing Steam altogether. I finally made a "Play Next" category about a year and a half ago, and it made a huge difference. I've gotten through more games since then than I had in the entire time I'd been on Steam before that. I also set up a "Cleared" category for games I'm done with, which keeps me motivated as I see it grow. I keep those two visible on my main library page, and minimize everything else. So much better!

Hi, anaaa!

I'm new to the whole giveaway thing, and I've only bought bundles through Humble Bundle so far, but I've been leaving the keys hidden so it's easier for me to tell which ones are unredeemed. I suppose if I start buying from multiple sites, though, it will make sense for me to keep track of everything in one place. I'd probably go with a spreadsheet myself.

Thanks for the giveaway!

I keep a spreadsheet because who doesn't love spreadsheets? lol. It helps me keep track of the games I bought and whether I've redeemed them or not. Sometimes I don't want a game right now, but then I look at it again and wanna play it. Thanks for your reply! :)

If you redeem the key and don't use it for 1/2 years, you have a really small chance of getting your key revoked.
If you don't reveal, and after 1 or 2 years you reveal them, you have a small chance of the place where you bought being out of keys to give you.
Either way, if you bought from a good store, you can have both of these situations resolved via costumer care.

No good answer here I think, just. A preference :) I do keep them unrevealed, so I know what I gave away allready. (I also do keep a spreedsheet of all the games I have with the indication "given", "used" etc, having them unrevealed its just another layer of protection so I don't gift something I gave before

So if not used right away, there's always a chance of keys getting revoked. I haven't had any problems yet, and my oldest keys are just 2-3 months old.
I like the idea of having an extra layer of protection. Thanks!

i always reveal keys right away. if they're for me, i redeem them. if they're for giveaways, i put them in a txt file. i'm sure there are better methods, but i'm lazy and uncreative.

Reveal + put into my Excel database, I strongly prefer this. The reason is, I purchased some stuff from Humble years ago and saved it in Excel - I wanted to have a look at my stuff over at Humble website a few days ago and could not find them anymore - they are not under purchases, not under library, just lost somewhere. No idea what happened (maybe I'm just looking in the wrong place), but if I had not saved them in a file, it would be very frustrating looking for them. This way I just gave up looking, no problem since I have them saved on my USB

I'm always afraid they're gonna disappear, so that's why I get them and put them into a spreadsheet. I'd go crazy if I lost them. Thanks!

I'd say it depends on the seller.

Humble Bundle: reveal all keys -not gift links- right away and store them in a safe place.
Reason: keys aren't allocated until you try to reveal them, which means you can be left empty handed if they run out, and will have to wait for a restock.
That is, IF they restock, because sometimes they won't be able to (i.e. delisted games), or will outright refuse to, as it happened with a few Humble originals once they got Steam keys, because they sold much more than anticipated, so they used a petty "we didn't promise you a Steam key in the first place" excuse.

Addendum on gift links: due to Humble's schizophrenic policies about gifting (that unsurprisingly started once IGN took over), using gift links equals to shouting "I AM A TRADER/RESELLER", which they'll then use as an excuse to refuse ANY form of help, or outright TERMINATE your account on account of "breaching ToS".
By losing your account, you'll lose access to all your purchases (and Humble Wallet), leaving chargebacks as the only option to at least get your money back.

And even when they do help fix something THEY did wrong, they're always doing it as a "one time exception". Bottom line, you want to actively interact with Humble as rarely as possible, preferably never, and if you really must, be as vague as possible, and always be prepared for the worst.

Indie Gala: reveal all keys -gift links are fine here- right away, and use them within 60 days, because they'll refuse to listen to any complaint after that.
Even more so when dealing with bundles, as they're notoriously bad when choosing which devs/publishers to partner with - I reckon at least half of the games reported in the revoked keys megathread are from Indie Gala bundles, and some of those "devs" are known for revoking their stuff pretty often - if Valve doesn't beat them at it by booting them off the store and invalidating all their generated keys.
Bad partner choices and "no help after 60 days" policy (and subpar bundles) aside, they're alright as a company.

Fanatical is good, there have been reports of users having used keys even several years old with no issues whatsoever, and should there be issues, they won't question it as much as others do. Heck, they even replace keys from mystery bundles (with other mystery keys, of course) under the right circumstances - i.e. like that time a 65% positive game slipped into a bundle advertised as having only 80% and up games.

Thanks for such a detailed answer! :) I've never dared to buy from HB because I've read that thread I linked and most problems came from there.

Thanks for your reply! I've never had any problems so far, but my oldest purchase was only like 2-3 months ago. Today I activated a couple of games and everything went fine. I'm probably making a bigger deal out of it than I should. I was just wondering what everyone else did with their keys.

In my case, I put them in a spreadsheet just to keep them organized. It's hard to keep track of purchased games and their keys.

Totally agree with this. I only reveal keys if I intend to use them right after, be it for myself or giveaways. I have unrevealed keys dating back several years with Fanatical and Humble and never had any major issues.

The only issue I can recall was when Humble didn't have keys in stock for a game I was trying to reveal, but they had this sorted the following day so it was hardly a issue anyway.
