My biggest disappointment was the Xenoblade Chronicles X collector's edition for the Wii U. I was a HUGE fan of Xenoblade Chronicles on the Wii, so I thought it would be worth while. In the end, the game box was exactly the same as the standard version and the only cool stuff it came with was an art book (decent) and a flash drive with "selections" from the sound track. Really, only 3 songs and they were in a weird, unreadable format. The flash drive itself was pretty poor too. Less than 1gb.

It isn't too bad if you like collectors editions, and the content that came with it was fairly standard for the price range it was in. The issue with the usb was that it had this weird drm that made it so the soundtrack would only play on windows PCs. After I copied the soundtrack off the usb and formatted it, the usb worked ok.

Yes, it was the same price as the digital version anyway.
The japanese version had some goodies though (some stickers,a poster, and a fridge magnet in the shape of a cartridge of the game).

It's also a way to have a presence in retail (which still matters, in particular for portables) while saving on manifacturing.

I guess, I'm still glad I got them for display and storing the original cartridges since I don't have their boxes anymore, and finding GB/GBA games complete with a box in good condition is hard and expensive

The only collector's edition I have is Project X Zone. It came with an artbook and a CD with an incomplete soundtrack from the game (I don't even think it has all the songs composed specifically for the game). Neither of those saw much use, but at least it came with a little poster that I got a (cheap) frame for and hung on my wall.

I've never even heard of that game. But after looking it up, it looks pretty neat.
Incomplete soundtracks always make the collectors editions look cheap.. You're (supposedly) paying a fare bit extra for the thing, so why not just include the whole soundtrack?

I only bought 1 collectors edition ever and that was Halflife 2. feels like centuries ago.
So that means its my worst and best CE.
Tshirt, long gone. Tin can, still be using used for candy storage for the kids. dvd sleeve, got it somewhere.
Now I think of it, its a pretty bad CE

A t-shirt does not sound too bad, as long as the t-shirt itself is nice. Also, collectors editions sure were different back then. I don't remember any coming with huge statutes, it was more like "you get a few extra goodies".
That reminds me, I do actually own one more collectors edition. It's the one for Pool of Radiance, and I found it in the clearance box in a gaming store, so it was like 2€. The game did not sell well, and I can absolutely see why ;) Anyway, it came with a mouse mat, a small pewter figurine from a D&D based wargame (it was just a random one, not one specifically made for the game, and I got a really ugly one at that!), and a pointless map. it was in the same sized game box as the regular game, so I did not expect much from it. The box did look nice though.

When I read the title my mind immediately went to Alone in the Dark for XBox 360.
But there only the game sucks, the Collector Edition itself is actually ok.
To be fair I can't really say first hand if it does suck. I got sidetracked by some other game pretty fast and never returned. But the general reviews aren't very favorable.

I have that same Myst 4 Collectors Edition, only in german.
I never really looked at the goodies before. Just checked - the pack of cards really is incomplete. 7 - 10, J, Q, K, A and a Joker. What's even the point? >_<
Then again I got it secondhand for 2€, so I can't really complain. :3 and later bought it digitally, without ever installing from the disc...

There are some card games that just use 32 cards, so I guess you could use it for that... but really, not even giving you a full deck of cards does seem like they were just cheaping out.
Did you at least play it after you got it digitally? It's a really nice game. It's probably the second best game in the series, after Riven.

To provide an answer to your figurine riddle at the end, the Ordinator's Indoril armor is quite distinctive, particularly the face mask :) Tribunal was a great expansion, though my personal favourite was Bloodmoon. TES: Morrowind remains one of my most played games to this day ^^

It's cool to see that my initial guess was correct :). I recognized it from Morrowind and thought it had something to do with Vivec somehow.

I just have 'The witcher' and even if it's pretty cool I kinda regreted it buying it. The artwook is just in english so a lot of information I missed (this was back in 2007). The calendar was already outdated when I bought it (I think, or at least in some months) and the girl cards it's.... Meh, I mean, sure, sexy girls but... Come on.
No figurine. It comes with the OST, with of all three witchers is the most 'folkloric' :)

The "sexy cards" in TW 1 really did seem rather... juvenile. It was not good, it's one of those games that really exemplified how games don't do sex well in games, and how it just feels juvenile and desperate.Did they really make physical cards out of it for the CE?
Their approach in TW 2 & 3 was a lot better.

It's just a book with bigger drawings. A4.
I liked the idea about it, in TW1 everything was like a tribute or a reminder of the books and the universe, so... I can understand it, the driad, the peasan'ts son... Just like in the books. Like "pokemon style, gotta catch em all" with different sidequests and stuff, but... yeah, collecting the cards as a trophy is kinda... stupid and childish.

The closest that I own to a collector's edition is the limited edition of Inferno: The Odyssey Continues for DOS. It came in a tin, which is nice for storing manuals along with the usual print manuals and a soundtrack CD. I can't complain, mind. It cost the same as the regular game in a cardboard box.

There were CEs for DOS games (limited edition and collectors edition is pretty much the same thing in this regard, if they release them at the same time, and one comes with some little extra)? I do remember some of them having nice little feelies, that would be part of a collectors edition these days.

Yeah it was pretty good, i only wanted the companions book, with potions, crafting, magic, familiars.
It did came with a Mr. Drippy doll. Its adorable.
Sells on amazon for a lot more than it cost. Maybe i should have had bought an extra copy. Pretty sure i was the only person that asked for the collectors edition in that store. Not the most popular game around here.

I have a (rare) dvd version of Atlantis 3, not a bad game maybe, but never was into the whole Myst thing.
Also had tex murphy overseer with a red blinking led light on the tower.
And an adventure game called fable, with the cd box, manual, etc put in a "book".
Don't see that anymore with everything digital.
I offered it to GOG (as some other stuff) but they never did anything with it.

I got some kind of D&D PC RPGs collection, which had the two Baldur's Gate, the two Icewind Dales, the first Neverwinter Night, Temple of the Elemental Evil and a couple of mediocre games I can't remember. A nice amount of great games for a ridiculously low price. Sadly it's only a box full of badly-printed CDs and they're all in French. I played the first Baldur's Gate in French, and the translation was so abysmal I decided to download English isos for the other games in the pack (I still have PTSD from it and now refuse to play games in French unless they were made by French people). So basically that thing is just collecting dust now.

But... but... this one is really cheap. Are you sure you would not want a couple of those?

The last picture is the little ordinator from the Morrowind CE right? Was it much more expensive than the standard game at launch? Anyway, I don't own any collector edition, usually the content is not worth the extra money for me, as I don't collect figurines or statuettes or gadgets.

Deus Ex Human Revolution for PC. Im a huge fan of Deus Ex. The box was in english (im from spain and we translate this sort of things there for the local editions), the figure was poorly painted, the art book was misaligned and the price was 130 euros and not the 39 of the regular one XD. Biggest mistake for me ever.

I would personally have preferred to get a box in English than a localized one :P Back when companies would still translate things here, many stores would import things from the UK because the English editions would sell better than the localized ones.I can't remember seeing a game being localized in ages though. Last non-kids game I remember seeing localized was Black & White.

I have the EQ2 Collector's Edition - well, I have many CEs, but the EQ2 one was probably the most disappointing. I'm pretty sure I paid a whole lot extra (close to $100 if I recall) for a gift tin, a collectible coin, and a cloth map.
I haven't bought a CE in ages. The older I get, the sillier it seems.

Witcher (1) collector's edition first day it was released. Wanted to 'support developers' so much, followed this game. Game was terribly unoptimized and was hanging every 15 minutes. I barely managed to play first chapter and decided to drop the game, expecting fixes. I remember there was a lot of community's negativity for the first release of the game due to these issues, game requiring for comfortable playing way more powerful hardware than other games with similar level of engines needed, and release being overall raw.
In collector's edition there was a product registration option, and they had nerve to send later a mail, informing that they have published Enhanced Edition with optimization and bug fixes, and offered to buy it, full price. Basically the reason I didn't yet touch any of these titles since then, got first two games on some heavy sale probably only this year.

Collectors editions. They usually come with some tat end up holding absolutely no value in the long run. Some of the tat is at least kinda well made, but then there are those that are just garbage.
So what are the worst ones you've got?
For me, it has to be Myst 4. I love the Myst series, it's one of my favourite adventure game series (and I say this as someone who got into it well after Myst V got released). But the collectors edition in Myst 4 is just terrible.
The box it comes in is nice. It's shaped like a book, and while it's a bit on the flimsy side, it looks good, and it fits the theme of the game. Sadly the content leaves a lot to be desired. How about a demo of the soundtrack? You don't even get the entire soundtrack, you just get a few select songs from it. You also get an incomplete deck of cards, and a few making of videos.
A sensible person might then ask "why do I own it?". It was cheaper than just buying the game on its own.
Myst V also had a rather lackluster collectors edition, but at least it had some stuff of interest. It came with a book that gave some details about the previous games, the game world, and also talked about things like the language and the counting system they created for the games (this could actually be used to solve some of the puzzles in Riven). It also came with a complete soundtrack, which was an improvement. At least I think it's complete, but I'm not 100% sure.
And bonus points for those who can identify the little figurine in the final picture. It was from the very first collectors edition I ever bought. Out of 5 in total (I'm not showing mine from Guild Wars 1, which was actually pretty nice as it came with a headset, and a surprisingly well made art book) and Dreamfall (which again was cheaper than just buying the game on its own).
