too many things ... but doesn't matter, steam games ain't worth a damn - even some pirated
collection is better than having games on steam lol - so no reason to be bothered

almost feels like as if the subscription fee for steam is you being an idiot and paying for stuff you won't use anyway
much like consoles ... only with far less quality control lol (known as freedums and mods for the special snowflakes)

Mine will sound fairly trivial but I wish they had dedicated community mods, people to suspend/ban people from posting/spamming garbage ref and CSGO links on EVERY group and profile they can. I've pretty much stopped going to the activity page because of this and you can only block so many people, heck I've even reported people I see constantly spamming and they are never punished.

Also it would have been nice if they figured out a way to moderate achievement cheating/unlockers. From what they said on reddit its pretty much impossible without some sort of always connected to the server DRM type deal but oh well. Seems like they stopped doing fun achievement hunts since people pretty much exploited every achievement event from Summer ticket booth, potato ARG and Christmas coal.

Forced game updates. Should be able to put it to 'Manual Update Only' mode.
Used to be able to not long ago.

I hate that they didnt implement the possibilty to play steam games on android or ios. I mean right now there are many indie games that could be played on a mobile device. They would only need to add a mobile client plus a kind of emulator that can be used to simulate controlls from the pc :)
and i hate that not all steam games have achievements ._. and that there are broken ones that dont get fixed :/

Steam is absolutely atrocious at recommending similar games to players, and so a lot of games go unnoticed

  • Has a DRM component. Being optional for devs isn't good enough, it should not be an option at all. But much, much worse is that it allows way worse 3rd party DRM, and doesn't even always indicate it on the store page.
  • Lack of quality control and moderation. Valve just hates having actual paid employees do oversight. This lets devs get away with releasing crap, deleting valid criticism in game hubs and padding their store pages with shill reviews.
  • Related to the above, terrible support with lots of useless automated messages and not enough humans actually solving problems.
  • Related to the last two, a way too high cut of sales is taken given how little work is actually done.
  • Attempts to introduce paid mods instead of just adding donations.
  • Steam Workshop being exclusive to the Steam version of a game. It should get spun off into its own website and allow you to connect other accounts (especially GOG) to verify that you own a game and let you download mods.
  • The nudity/sex thing you have in the poll.
  • Valve still owes europeans compensation for the years of price gouging from when the $1=€1 bullshit got introduced to when the conversion rate came pretty close to that. I'll keep holding this against them until they give a 20% global discount to everyone affected for at least as many years as the price gouging went on.

There are almost certainly other things too, but this is what I can remember right now.

The DRM is indeed really shitty. Some games litterally have 3+ layers of DRM (for example: Steam + U-play + Denuvo).

Steam Workshop being exclusive to the Steam version of a game. It should get spun off into its own website and allow you to connect other accounts (especially GOG) to verify that you own a game and let you download mods.

That I don't agree with. The name says it all; it's a feature from Steam. If developers want better mod support across all platforms, they should make it themselves. That's not Steams job.

Honestly, all of this. Every time I want something on steam I check for other places I can get it DRM + bs-free before it goes on my steam wishlisht. I love the sales, but that doesn't make up for everything.

Most hated thing on Steam? DRM. That is why I prefer GOG.

Having to log into the store / community every time I visit it because Steam can't keep me logged in for more than a few minutes, at least in some browsers / networks. I haven't figured out why I'm being logged out so frequently, but it seems to be an issue that many people experience. Steam doesn't seem to care.

BTW, there was a great thread about Steam annoyances a few months back. Anyone has a link? It was well worth the read.

Crappy client with horrible functionality that they haven't bothered even trying to improve for a decade. They only change the store for the worse and the rest rots.

being no 18+ - allowing blood and violence but not nudity or sex (even if it's part of the story/game)

That's not really the case though, there's been plenty of games with nudity on steam in recent years. Some even being borderline pornographical in nature.

I would say that the worst part about steam is how Valve does not seem to care about fixing many of their issues. Their servers are wonky, and have been for a long time, their client is a bit buggy, and has been for a long time, their support sucks, and has done so for a long time, groups can send announcements that minimizes your game (depending on the game in question) and there's no way of disabling it, and it's an issue that Valve has been aware of for a long time, chat is buggy, in particular if you open up something in the browser or cellphone app and has been for a long time.... the list can be made longer. The main issue with Steam is how Valve simply don't seem to care about fixing things, they know that they're the market leader, and that there's no real competition, so they don't "have" to fix things.

Which is why I want to see other digital distribution sites do well, like Origin, GOG and the upcoming Twitch/Amazon thing, because I want them to force Valve to improve.

I thought this said "what's the one thing you like about Steam" and I was struggling for an answer...

Here's some of the things I dislike:

  • Censorship
  • Regionlocks
  • Security issues (remember when you could see someone else's detailed info? That was great)
  • Awful search, awful tags
  • Can't change what groups are featured on profile (you can pick one, but not the two that show up under it)
  • Support
  • Age verification keeps happening even after always clicking "don't ask me again"
  • Can't subscribe to group announcements, so you are forced to manually check them or miss something potentially important
  • Forcing smart phone apps on users so they can trade/use market
  • Forcing to use U-play, etc
  • No ability to hide Friends list from other users
  • No ability to hide certain games from showing up in your profile
  • No ability to choose which version of badge to display
  • No ability to simply comment on what you thought about a game, so everyone posts one sentence "reviews" that aren't helpful
  • No neutral rating for reviews
  • Their emojis are so tiny you can't even make out what they are supposed to be
  • Chat log is limited to last five or something messages
