People should really learn how to handle their vehicle before taking friends out in it. That boating GIF always reminds me of this video.

Most of these games were already dead and those who are still played can solve by using Hamachi or similar, not a big deal. Unfortunately, it had to happen sooner or later.

Not if you want to find a public game. It's true that they are older games and most are probably dead though, although a few might still have people playing.

Same here, when I tried to find info on some of my gamespy games a few months back I saw a page that said the gamespy service is shut down.

As long as a game has LAN mode, you can use Tunngle to play with others.

Nah, they'll probably add a little notice on the store page, like they did for the first FEAR.
Besides, Rogue Trooper had a Gamespy based multiplayer that has been deactivated long ago and it's still available on Steam.

Don't think the original Unreal Tournament or other Unreal games used Gamespy. If it did, I'd never have been able to find any matches. Because anything that used a gamespy login etc. never worked for me.

I very rarely play anything multiplayer, except with my brothers, and that's almost always co-op.

I don't even do that. I don't want to ruin my gaming experience with some twat getting annoyed.

Yes, but you are unlikely to find someone randomly sitting waiting for a game anyway. You can still connect via direct IP, play by email, or LAN (Evolve)

Yikes, lots of great games are about to lose a big chunk of their replay value... Many of these games can still be played over a network using 3rd party stuff, but nowhere near all of them. Even fewer if you want public servers. And you're S.O.L. if the online aspect was game content like user created levels or challenges, or global highscores.

Sort of the same deal with Nintendo's Wii network shutting down, but hopefully the Dolphin emulator ends up getting some kind of 3rd party server support (they already have netplay/P2P, which is pretty good).

I'm hoping there's a movement towards less of a dependence on 'online only' multiplayer in games, so we can go back to the more social days of couch multiplayer/LAN parties. At the very least, devs need to put in support for creating and connecting to privately-owned servers.

Company of Heroes already has a steam client version, which is great because I never managed to play a multiplayer session prior to it, haha.

Edit: Reddit is saying Bad Company 2 uses EA servers, so it won't be affected. Hopefully!

There are private servers that have nothing to do with EA still up and running for this game.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

EA does not have servers. Never did. All they do is publish the server software so that other people will run servers for them, so that they don't have to pay for running server machines.

At least EA seems to have confirmed that BF 2142, BF2 and BC2 will be transitioned away from GameSpy so that they can still be played:

Good Riddance, gamespy was trash from day 1 imo. Sad seeing so many good games being effected by this but i am glad it is finally shutting down. Had nonstop issues over the years getting that shit to work right.
