Recently, I've noticed a lot of people mentioning that they pirate games. I know this is nothing new, but it seems like the "Burn him! He's a pirate!" days are over. By this, I mean that people are more accepting of it, and don't criticize you as much for mentioning it. Just had a few questions and wanted the communities input on this.

  1. What is your stance on pirating video games, or anything for that matter?
  2. Have you ever pirated a game?
  3. When was the last time you pirated a game?
  4. What game was it?
  5. Why did you do it?

To be fair, I'll post my answers, because yes, I have pirated games in my past.

  1. I know it's a cop out, but I don't know my stance on pirating. It's a grey area to me. Yes it's wrong, but I understand why people do it. Some do it for wrong reasons (Just flat out didn't want to pay and pirate newly released games day 1). I don't agree with that and in my eyes is wrong. I understand pirating an old game that steam charges $10-$20 for that might not even be supported on your OS anymore. I then ask myself what's the difference? Truth is not much :P It's all how you look at and try to justify it.
  2. Yes
  3. In the last year, can't remember specific day nor month for that matter.
  4. F.E.A.R. Platinum
  5. Didn't want to spend $10 on an old game that I was unsure would work on my computer.

The only thing you truly own is your body. I pirated and still pirating a lot of games if i find somthing intresting, you want multiplayer you buy it. Companis dont need my money,i dont pay EA,i dont pay Blizzard,i dont pay activision, etc. I pay valve,i pay developers that really need the suport. Fuck you ppl pay for your music to? Music that its not music anymore, you have an artist that uses voice and 1 guy makes the lyrics 1 guy makes the song..not 1 artist makes all(some are still that way, respect) But i got offroad here. Same as with the music industy, game developers do games for money now, incomplete games with the so called DLC. AAAA DLC the nice thing that is ready when the games is but you have to pay again for it. Oh but "you are a pirate lol you dont pay the BIG companis, they need the support so they can charge DLC's"..

  1. If you can't get it where you live, or if they are needlessly expensive, yes I suppose piracy is the answer (a great example are PS3 and 360 games priced at 70+ euros in a country where an average monthly salary is ~300 euros).
  2. yup.
  3. for PC... can't remember. For emulated consoles, a few weeks ago.
  4. a bunch of PSP games.
  5. I can't buy them in Serbia, and if I could, I have no clue how I would get them on my PC from the UMD.

If you have a PSP, it's pretty easy, there are guides, which I won't link to because of the ambiguity of doing so.

I don't own a PSP. Always wanted one while it was new, but like console games, consoles are crazy expensive in my country (around 30-40% more expensive than in the US).

  1. I'm neutral on the subject. I've done it in the past and I'll probably do it in the future but not nearly as much as I did in the past. In fact I haven't pirated anything in upwards of a year now and picked up HBO (I would of done so a lot earlier if they offered an online package online like netflix or so).

  2. Yes

  3. Nov 2012 I believe, or sometime around Skyrim release.

  4. Skyrim

  5. I owned the game on console and since my quest was bugged I had to fix it on PC. It was a game breaking bug and I didn't notice until a few hours later of being side tracked and saving over a file I could go back to. I didn't want to start a new game with that much time being invested so I had to fix the save file on PC and did so. Considering I already owned the game, on a different console, I believe it was ok/justified. The devs said they had no patch coming out with that fix within the week+ so I took it into my own hands.

I do own it on PC now though too. I also know people who torrent games as a demo to see if they'll either like it or actually work on their PC.

1) I don't care about it. It's not my problem is it?
2) Like everybody
3) Don't remember the last time (2+ years ago)
4) As above, though the last pirated game on my PC was probably Minecraft.
5) Usually it was a game I've had (older title) but lost/destroyed the disc and it was unobtainable at the time.
Nowdays we have GoG (yay for Dungeon Keeper 1 & 2 :D) , or for purpose of trying it and only if I consider buying
the game, though after I started studying I have massive backlog of bought games
(I will finally finish Skyrim main quest, ... , someday, ... , in the future)

  1. I am neutral on this.... I used to pirate games when i know i wont be able to afford them even after the discount, People say dont play games if u dont have money to pay them... but i feel it creates potential customers like me..right now i have more than 840 games on steam...if i stopped playing instead of pirating when i cant afford them.. i would have changed my hobby and never would have bought these many games.

2.Yes

  1. Maybe 2 to 3 years before...sometimes i download pirated games if they don't have a demo
  2. No idea
5.To check it out if i will like it or not.. region restricted games... games which doesn't have regional pricing

What is your stance on pirating video games, or anything for that matter?

I'm not judging those who pirate everyone has a reason (price, region lock, missing feautures in the game, testing before you buy , aggressive DRM etc) but I think if you like a game (SP or MP) very much you need to buy it if you can't afford full price buy it on sale so you can reward the developers work and hope for a sequel. Gaming is a luxury not a necessity many of those who pirate do not understand this notion and feel entiteled to play every game not to mention they judge too harshly a game wich they got for free and feel proud for not giving money on a game even if they play ir over 100 hours and its on their favorite game list not including the retarded kids who never programmed in their life one line of code and only judge by graphics. For the people complaining about the price: dont like the price of the game then do not buy it!

Have you ever pirated a game?
Yes many games :)
When was the last time you pirated a game?

What game was it?
Insurgency

Why did you do it?
There was no demo and after playing the training mission i decided with a friend to buy a 4 pack wehn it`s on sale :)

Well, I think when someone is poor and don't have money for video games it's tolerable. But when someone has lots of money and piretes just because they can, that's being an asshole.

2, Have you ever pirated a game?
Yup

3, When was the last time you pirated a game?
Last month

4, What game was it?
Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc

5, Why did you do it?
The game is originally Japanese and was released in English for PS Vita only. I don't have the money for a Vita so I wanted to play it on my PSP but it isn't available in my Country for this platform.

Yeah, I'm a pirate. I usually download a game and try it before even consider buying it unless it's an online only game. The last game was Skyrim, bought it like 2 week later during a steam sale but I sill have the pirated copy installed for some reason ^^

Also if it's not on steam then it's meant to be pirated ...

  1. It is part of the business. People will have reasons for doing it, and the reasons will sometimes be valid and other times not. But good content will usually be rewarded in the end. I like Lars Doucet's analysis of the topic here, it's simple, well thought out and pretty much summarizes my opinion better than I ever could.

  2. Yes

  3. Can't remember

  4. Can't remember.

  5. I used to pirate games much much more when I couldn't afford them. It was really that simple. Then again I also used to play tons of shareware, freeware and demo, not go straight for pirating. When I really wanted to play a game that cost my electricity bill for a month, frankly I didn't feel like I was stealing anyone's money by downloading it because they'd just have never gotten my money anyway. They weren't gonna miss what they weren't gonna get, so ethically I felt I was harming no one. The only games I used to give money to back then were ones I had tried and liked and wanted to thank the developers for, and that provided the prices were reasonable. Sometimes I'd buy a smaller game from them, or donate something or just try to be loud about the game - I figured advertising was another valid way to give back.

Now that I can afford games, I tend to be really generous with developers whose games I like. There are at least 4 games from last year alone that I bought more than 6 copies of, just for some art sketches, or to have in a different platform, or to gift, or to trade, and basically just to say Good job guys, more of this. They tend to be indies or smaller companies, because that's where I feel my still limited resources are making more impact. I still can't afford most AAA games when they come out, but now that I know that their price will eventually drop to something I can afford, I'm willing to wait. Plus, now I HAVE something else to play while waiting. Being less desperate helps with patience. ;)

  1. I'm for it. Not because I want to steal, but because I think the whole system should be completely different somehow. Same thing with music. I'm glad alot of artists and musicians have expressed they don't care or even support piracy. That's so cool. The "pay what you want" system is a great thing and really makes me feel like paying. Generally everything costs too much and has to go through pointless phases that make stuff more expensive for no real good reason.

  2. Yes.

  3. A few weeks ago I think?

  4. Not sure...probably Mafia, Escape From Monkey Island or Lost.

  5. Because you can't buy them anywhere, apparently. I would totally rather buy them on Steam but I can't.

  2. Yes, hundreds if not thousands of them, nowdays I "only" download like 10 games a year.
  3. 3 weeks ago
  4. Assassin's Creed Liberation HD
  5. Because it was just released and it wasn't on sale. It was the worst Assassin's Creed game I have ever played, but I will still buy it when it goes on sale on steam.

I don't have a job (currently try to find one) and all the little money I have left is from my college days (scholarship), so I only buy games during sales (and bundles).

  1. it generates game sales/media sales because people who can not buy it at the time they want to try it may buy it latter down the track

  2. yes i pirate games,movies,music,tv shows,expensive programs ect .

  3. today

  4. i downloaded Lego the movie + wrc powerslide

  5. I like to try before i buy, i grew up with developers releasing betas / demos for almost every single game that got released so we could try it b4 we decided to buy it, now days that has basically stopped. Yer alot of developers do release (closed betas) demos sometimes but this past few years i have spent money out right on some absolute piles of shit games so i (and have for a long time) try it before i buy it. About 90% of the games i download i do buy and support the developers.

Ive seen alot of developers cry pc piracy is hurting there business but the truth of the matter is console is just as bad if not worse, (next gen NOT yet > but its coming)

Ive also seen developers say piracy has lead to alot of publicity and helped the game sell more.

Now the "expensive programs" > 3dsmax / adobe creative suite ect ect i don't have 2-5 grand to buy a license outright to use the programs nor do i see the value in them unless you are making a return back from them. I don't qualify for the student discount (think its 1200-2k. just my 2 bob

  1. I guess it is acceptable for trial and evaluation purposes. I normally buy or trade for the games I want.

  2. Used to pirate quite a bit in the past when I was poor. Still pirating EA's crappy sports games.

  3. Battlefield 4 and Call Of Duty Ghosts

  4. On the release day of the games stated above.

  5. Wanted to see just how bad the games were. And to try out the games before splashing the cash on them. I ended up buying BF4 though, months after release.

What is my stance on pirating video games? Honestly, meh. Not indifferent, but meh. There are legitimate reasons for doing it, as people above me have stated, but nowadays I find reviews done by similar-minded individuals and my friends' input are my best bets for figuring out whether a game is worth purchasing or not. I also very rarely buy a game new, and I try to follow the Secret of Monkey Island's excerpt of never paying more than $20 for a PC game.

Have I ever pirated a game? Oh yes, a few of times. When I first found utorrent and The Pirate Bay, I was a torrenting left and right like it was an internet clearance sale. It was mostly games, films and television shows from the 80's and 90's, though.

When was the last time I pirated a game? 2011.

What game was it? Duke Nukem Forever.

Why did I do it? After the first week of negative reviews, I wanted to see firsthand how poorly made and poorly optimized for PCs Duke Nukem Forever was. I wasn't disappointed. Me and my friends shared a laugh for an evening on how shit it was. I deleted it the morning after because I didn't want 7 GB of dead-weight data sitting on my HDD. I picked up Duke Nukem 3D Megaton Edition on Steam recently, and I also heard that Forever has gotten some updates since its initial release and now plays somewhat decent(though it's still garbage overall), so I plan on getting it when it goes on sale again.

See ive pirated games, infact I think I've got one such game on my pc (along with 5,6 of my steam games) I either only get the free game if I want to see first hand what its like before I buy it (yes ill youtube gameplay vids aswell……… it bought terarriea, witcher 2night, farcry 3…, and all few steam games like this) or as a demo almost (I dl rome total 2 (took nearly 5 hours to dl, then after a few hours I uninstalled it as I just didn't like it compared to Shogun 2)

sometimes I just dl the game because I can, (temptation is a bad thing. If games, films etc were made to a lower budget so the retail price was lower I think piracy would take a huuuge hit… .Mass Effect 3 for £45?? plus things that are locked in the game? or I could dl it and spend £50+ on steam games, unique, independent titles, hmmmmm I know which ive done and do.

I don't really care if people pirate or not, but there's line in everything. If you know you can afford to pay for the game you enjoy, but still pirate because you're such a cheapskate then you are just an asshole.

Of course I have. I regretted the time I used to download DA2, it was so awful.

Can't remember the last game I pirated, it has been so long and there haven't been too many recent releases that interest me enough in order me to pirate it.

Because I wasn't sure if the game was worth the money.
