Recently, I've noticed a lot of people mentioning that they pirate games. I know this is nothing new, but it seems like the "Burn him! He's a pirate!" days are over. By this, I mean that people are more accepting of it, and don't criticize you as much for mentioning it. Just had a few questions and wanted the communities input on this.

  1. What is your stance on pirating video games, or anything for that matter?
  2. Have you ever pirated a game?
  3. When was the last time you pirated a game?
  4. What game was it?
  5. Why did you do it?

To be fair, I'll post my answers, because yes, I have pirated games in my past.

  1. I know it's a cop out, but I don't know my stance on pirating. It's a grey area to me. Yes it's wrong, but I understand why people do it. Some do it for wrong reasons (Just flat out didn't want to pay and pirate newly released games day 1). I don't agree with that and in my eyes is wrong. I understand pirating an old game that steam charges $10-$20 for that might not even be supported on your OS anymore. I then ask myself what's the difference? Truth is not much :P It's all how you look at and try to justify it.
  2. Yes
  3. In the last year, can't remember specific day nor month for that matter.
  4. F.E.A.R. Platinum
  5. Didn't want to spend $10 on an old game that I was unsure would work on my computer.

  1. I always feel bad pirating stuff. The only time that I personally do it is for emulation, especially if I can't be bothered to rip or locate a copy of something.
  2. Yeah.
  3. PC game? I can't even remember. Got a PSP game a couple months ago, though.
  4. Dissidia Duodecim.
  5. Ripping PSP games is not too bad, but I'm away from my PSP, so it's hard for me at the moment.

  1. I only pirate games that even if i do buy, no money would go to the developer, so mainly older games, and more recently PSP games because my UMD reader doesn't work. I am not against piracy of everything, because charging 20$ for ride to hell retribution is highway robbery, but I like to support the developers of games I like.

  2. Yes, I have pirated a game.

  3. The last time I pirated a game was about 2 or 3 weeks ago

  4. The game was Persona 3 Portable.

  5. I already own Persona 3 FES on PSN, and the 20$ price for an inferior version of the game just isn't right, and My psp is way too hacked to ever get it off the store anyways. And as mentioned before, getting a hard copy wouldn't allow me to play it anyways.
Other examples would be stuff like earthbound, because 200$ just isn't something i could ever afford for one game, though I ended up buying it on the Wii U VC.

What is your stance on pirating video games, or anything for that matter?

--- Depends on the situation. If you are just going to try the game for like one or two missions, then it's fine. Publishers have been putting to many restrictions on demo's to actually know what the final product is like.

--- I also agree with some of the other points out there, about if it's an old game and you aren't even sure it will run on your system.

--- Since I found Steam and it's sales and bundles (last year), I haven't pirated a single video game since then.

--- Whereas pirating TV Shows, I don't mind. Cause technically they are free in the first place as they air to normal television. Also the benefits for some TV Shows is that you can watch it just after some other country does, instead of a few hours or a few weeks.

Have you ever pirated a game?

--- Yes

When was the last time you pirated a game?

--- Last Year at some point

What game was it?

--- Total War: Rome II

Why did you do it?

--- To try the game out. I'm glad I did it, as it is the worst Total War game to date. Though it has improved a bit, I would not have paid the full release price.

  1. I love pirating, however, I respect people who buy the stuff instead. I know it's good to support the companies that make these game, but I can't bring myself to actually buy single player games anymore, or TV shows, or movies, or music for that matter. I do buy co-op or online games though, sadly I cannot pirate those (conveniently anyways)
  2. Well, yes.
  3. Last week or so? I stopped keeping count.
  4. I really don't remember, nothing special.
  5. Either for personal use or to share with a mate.

When was the last time you pirated a game? - a year ago? Whenever Payday 2 was released

For me pirating has always been a good way to test out the games (like a "full" demo version). Without any exception, when i liked a game...i bought it. My last pirated game was Borderlands 2. I bought it right away during the winter sale. And another totaly random example would be Fable: The Lost Chapters. Finished the pirated game twice, but i bought it just to have it in my collection.

I have absolutely no problem with pirating games. pirating is fine, really. it can even be benefitial to the industry, which has been proven already (it can be an additional way of advertisement and boost sales). I personally don't pirate anymore, since I discovered how to circumvent regional pricing, which allows me to buy the amount of games I want every month. If steam would remove the possibility to trade for games from other countries, I would probably go back to pirating at least some games, since I am just not satisfied with only 1-2 games each month. None of this would change the amount of money I spend for games, btw.

  1. Well I myself have pirated a lot of games and most of my friends do it too, But after finding steam I have avoided pirating games but I still believe there are certain situations where I don't mind if people pirate them, If you are able to buy them and it's a game you would buy but you still pirate it then no in that case you shouldn't pirate it.
  2. Yeah quite a lot
  3. Uhhh November Last year
  4. 7 days something something zombie survival bleh
  5. My friend begged me to play with him, It sounded like a fun game to play with a friend so I played it with him and it sucked so I'm glad I didn't buy it, Other times I pirated games if I really liked it then I bought it on steam or I'm planning to, One time I pirated because my ps3 version of the game was stolen along with the Ps3 which was skyrim but I bought that on steam too when it was on sale :P
I used to be a console gamer so I feel like i've spent too much money anyway after seeing the prices on steam but still I won't pirate because I'm able to buy any game I feel like if it has a fair price :P

  1. What is your stance on pirating video games, or anything for that matter?

I don't agree with it, never did. Not in this day and age anyway. Yes, new AAA games can go as up to 60 or whatever, but if you want to play games and you don't want to pirate there are a lot of alternatives, a huge amount of sales every day on different websites. So the price is no longer an excuse these days (with some exceptions). When on a summer sale you can pay below 5 Euros per game for a bunch of great games(some AAA) that are a couple of years old, then what's your excuse? (again, with some exceptions). If i can afford it here, in Romania, where the minimum wage is around 180 Euros or less (around that, anyway) then i think that most of the people in other countries should.

Have you ever pirated a game?

I did. I only started buying games like half a year ago.

When was the last time you pirated a game?

Think it was 6-8 months ago.

What game was it?

Don't really remember.

Why did you do it?

I lived under the impression that i can't afford them. I had my steam account for years but i never used it.
Once i started using steam, i never did it again and i don't plan on doing it in the future. If i can't afford a game when it comes out, i'll just wait for a sale. (This one sounds like a bad teleshopping commercial, lol)
I bought around 200 games since i last pirated one, and a lot of those i bought just to wash my sins :D Games that i already played by pirating.

  1. What is your stance on pirating video games, or anything for that matter?

The thing I don't like about "piracy" is the term. If you obtain an non-licensed copy of a game, you are described as someone who murders, rapes and steals. This term was invented by the music/movie industry to make it sound worse than it actually is.

Other than that, illegally copying games has always been a good way for me to try the games first. Back in the "good old days", most games had demos. Today, almost none do. So illegal copies are now more needed than ever.

Another plus are the cracked executables. Not much of an issue these days, but a few years ago, you had copy protections that required you to put the CD or DVD in the drive in order to play. I always used cracked executables for my original games so that I don't have to bother with that nonsense.

And don't get me started on the prices. When digital content distribution first showed up, publishers spammed us to death with how great that is for buying games. I remember presentations given at conventions where we were told that through digital distribution, $60 titles would be sold for $10 but still generate more revenue compared to $60 retail physical boxes. And guess what? Triple-A titles still cost a hell of a lot more than $10 on release. Usually near $40.

Before anyone jumps to conclusions, I have a good collection of games, going back to the early 90's. I love those boxes. Another thing I miss from back then; you had something to put on shelves. Nowadays it's all digital downloads or stupid DVD boxes :-|

  1. Have you ever pirated a game?

Yep.

  1. When was the last time you pirated a game?

About two weeks ago or so.

  1. What game was it?

Call of Duty Ghosts

I'm down with piracy for testing purposes. I will finish pirated game first, and if i liked it i'll buy regular copy. The reason behind this is that i don't want to show my support for products i didn't like, and the only way to show your appreciation for the game, unfortunately, is through purchase. The developers, in most cases, don't care if you're complaining on forums about quality of the game once you purchased it.

  1. What is your stance on pirating video game, or anything for that matter?

Personally it really depends on the type of game/movie/music you pirate. A good example are the Pokemon games. They always release two different versions at the same time (Diamond and Pearl, Heart Gold and Soul Silver, Black and White, X and Y). In my opinion it is alright to pirate the other one if you have purchased one of the versions since there are usually little to no difference except for the Pokemon's you can catch. Another thing are HD-remakes/Blue-rays of "old" movies, for example I own the entire Star Wars saga on DVD, but at this point in time DVD-quality are quite low by today's standards, so I would say it is okay to pirate the remake if you own the original.
As some others said they also pirate games for testing purposes (whether I like it, my PC can run it etc.), I also do that since my PC isn't the best in the world so sometimes some games aren't able to run on my system, or they might just not be worth buying.

  2. Have you ever pirated a game?

    Yes I have.

  3. When was the last time you pirated a game?

Quite some time ago actually, but I have always purchased the game afterwards if I liked it.

  4. What game was it?

    Can't remember.

  5. Why did you do it?

To see whether it were any fun and if it would run on my computer.

  1. What is your stance on pirating video game, or anything for that matter?

My first video game machine was a C64.. I didn´t even know you could buy games in like a shop or something. My Father had this co-worker who would provide me with a ton of games every now and then, and if my father was ok with it, it couldn´t possibly be wrong. (He was a very honest and law abiding man.) So playing pirated games appeared quite natural to me and back in the days there was literally no awareness of that matter, never heard a company or someone else complain about it till early 2K or something.
So my stance on it is quite liberal till today. I don´t see how it harms the industry as much, as I believe most people who download a game would´ve never ever bought it anyways, so the losses due to piracy, where they count every DL and multiply it by full price to get a sum are not really meaningful.

  1. Have you ever pirated a game?

I had 11 floppy drives for my Amiga 500.. question answered?

  1. When was the last time you pirated a game?

The day before I installed Steam, I guess, so about 3 years ago.

  1. What game was it?

I think it was Syndicate, or possibly Cities XL. (Paid 1500$ fine for that one, still can´t remember if it was the last one, as the prosecution came in 3 months after I pirated it.)

  1. Why did you do it?

As stated above, I was absolutely not aware that I was doing something wrong. I knew it was against the law, but the law and personal morals and standards often differ. Once again, as stated above, I still don´t see any "big wuzz" with it.

I'm interested, if you don't mind, to hear about what happened when you got caught pirating. Was it unbeknownst to you and you got a letter in the mail, or did the internet company start throttling your internet and sent you a message? I never met anyone who has gotten caught. I have only seen them when it was a huge amount of people getting caught and the media would paste that on all the headlines.

wow, you actually read all the answers? I´m really impressed.
I got a letter from a lawyer, included was a fairly long excerpt of the legal basis. Along with a log file proving I pirated, and finally a on remittance slip.
The rights owner of Cities XL wanted about 600$, the lawyer about 900$ and then there was a 200$ fine for expenses and stuff. (Please note that I live in germany, things may be completely different from that in the US)

Back then I just paid it, you know, to prevent further trouble. As of today, I wouldn´t do that again and just wait to see if there´ll be any actual prosecution. Also note, that german courts have come to a verdict stating first time offenders may not be charged more than 300$, and that 900$ for the lawyer is ridiculous and illegal usury.

The whole letter was aimed to intimidate and to make you pay, because most people fear being brought to court.
I learned that you can also haggle with them, if you cannot afford to pay. They just want as much money from you as they can possibly get, and are not really interested in a litigation at all.

Hope this answered your question.

I have read every response on this thread as I am extremely interested in peoples position on piracy :) No one has claimed to have gotten caught for doing it yet so this intrigued me a lot.

I would've just paid it as well, because I am not that educated on legal matters. Of course, I have been told to always fight it, because most of the time it falls through. This is true for my girlfriends dad who got a traffic ticket and went into court to fight it and no one appeared. He didn't have to pay any money for it since no one showed. Most of it is just scare tactics so you don't do something again. As for lawyers, I know they are infamous for their prices. Never needed one so I don't personally know, but I have heard it's one of the worst things about them, and also one of the best reasons to be one :P

My God, I understand that some people don't have enough money and comparing to their income those games are extremely expensive.
But when You have STEAM, and there are offers, it's just stupid to pirate! If games would be cheaper nobody would pirate them.
That's the thing.

Perfect example of expensive game is Borderlands 2. - (I paid 30 GBP) + Season pack 20 GBP, + 2 x LVL - 8GBP, 1 Character more 8 GBP, 1 character again 8GBP, some other DLC or addons 2 GBP EACH. That game already costs me 60GBP, and I know that if they do next DLC I will have to buy it XD I was unlucky I bought that game before Borderlands 2 GOTY came out XD

Although I'm buying here and there, especially on offers and I don't feel I need piracy.
Beside that I miss old times where games had more content than graphics.
I want games to entertain me longer than few days.

I simply am apart of the side that does not like pirating.
I know a friend who pirates indie games because he says:
"They are not worth buying especially since they suck half of the time."
And since I am a small indie dev myself, I decide that if people pirate my games, and I see what happens,
why do it to other people?

well the whole thing about not stealing is blatant bullshit and pointless semantics at best, just another excuse...if you're going to steal you should at least have the balls to admit it to yourself.

other than that the only opinion i have is "fine i admit it i'd probably download a car if i could now quit pestering me, the only people who have to sit through this are the ones who PAID to" (and in that vein occasionally I have downloaded cracks to escape particularly offensive drm I unfortunately found out about only after buying.)

I could see downloading it to see if it actually runs since the requirements are rarely accurate but you know almost nobody actually does this and then goes out and buys what they now already have. (you're by far a minority and you know it, but it always gets held up as "see its ok overall I'm sure most of them do this")

movie theaters have become expensive as balls for no reason and are no longer worth it to many....so i just don't see the newest movie that probably has tom cruse stuffed into a role he doesn't fit anyway bfd. theres a gulf between "this sucks and they're overcharging I'm not going" and "this sucks and they're overcharging I'm not paying but entitled to enjoy it anyway for some reason" entertainment isn't a basic requirement for life, its not like stealing bread...

also the "greedy companies already made too much money off it without my help" argument is straight retarded

fun fact, even indians who allegedly had no concept of ownership(but still worked land for crops(land use parceled out by the matriarch(for example)) and returned to the same hunting and fishing camps year after year) had some very very strict ip laws

i forgot "abandonware" and any game the developer says "sure i don't care pirate away" since the owner doesn't give a shit its probably fine(probably because all the owners have to and there could be more than one)

  1. What is your stance on pirating video games, or anything for that matter?
I do my best not to pirate, the exceptions being games not available in language I understand (and only subbed version is prated one) or not in sale (still if I want to play the game so badly I'm willing to pirate it then I'm more that willing to buy it when I find shop selling it). For others, it depends on reasons. Like when someone wants to try it before buying because there is no demo version or when someone wants to make sure their pc can run it then it's fine. Just one thing that annoys the hell out of me is someone saying "this is my favourite game" about title they pirated and have no intention of buying. It's like "I like it so much that I won't provide devs with funds for more awesome titles". These people I despise. Other type of people I don't like "I wouldn't pay for it but I could play", well if you wouldn't pay for it anything then you don't deserve to play it. Seriously, it's fine when someone thinks it's not worth x$ it's being sold for and if the price drops to y$ they might buy it. What is more I agree with that because I tend to wait for most games to get cheaper because I don't feel they are worth the price (especially with 1-2 hours gameplay and price ~10$). Still I'd rather wait until the price drops to understandable level rather than pirate it. I just don't like playing something I didn't pay for (apart from f2p or abandonware but for the second one if it's a good title I would still be happy to pay)

  2. Have you ever pirated a game?
Is there anyone who didn't? (apart from people rich enough to buy games they wanted in 90s; and some games we had on CDs were pirated and recorded by the seller so.. yeah)

  3. When was the last time you pirated a game?
    Can't remember

  4. What game was it?
Certain Visual Novel title (not gonna say which exactly because of reasons but it was yaoi)

  5. Why did you do it?
I couldn't find anywhere english version to buy. And any game I consider pirating is not available in sale or is not in english (and I tried learning japanese but I'm horrible at learning alphabet)

  1. I'm perfectly fine with piracy as long as some of these reasons apply: you want to try out the game before you buy it (use it as a demo); you can't buy the game in your region or the game you want isn't being sold anymore; you boycott a certain publisher; you cannot afford to buy games.
  2. Yes, because where I live the games are very expensive. I did it until I discovered Steam sales, now I often try to buy those games I played before, even if I already had my fun with them.
  3. About a month ago.
  4. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
  5. Tried it, played it for about an hour and added it to my Steam wishlist. I'll continue playing once I buy it.

Where I come from piracy is a very common thing, because games are very expensive here and people would rather spend money on something more necessary. For example, when I tell people I'm buying games I often get asked: "Why do you waste your money on them when you can get them for free and spend that money on something else?" However, I know a lot of people that are like me, and I believe the situation would further improve if Steam gave us more affordable prices (like in Russia).

this one is stupid. you boycott you boycott. you're making a choice not to buy something to send a message, doesn't mean you deserve it anyway to make the protest easier.
