Recently, I've noticed a lot of people mentioning that they pirate games. I know this is nothing new, but it seems like the "Burn him! He's a pirate!" days are over. By this, I mean that people are more accepting of it, and don't criticize you as much for mentioning it. Just had a few questions and wanted the communities input on this.

  1. What is your stance on pirating video games, or anything for that matter?
  2. Have you ever pirated a game?
  3. When was the last time you pirated a game?
  4. What game was it?
  5. Why did you do it?

To be fair, I'll post my answers, because yes, I have pirated games in my past.

  1. I know it's a cop out, but I don't know my stance on pirating. It's a grey area to me. Yes it's wrong, but I understand why people do it. Some do it for wrong reasons (Just flat out didn't want to pay and pirate newly released games day 1). I don't agree with that and in my eyes is wrong. I understand pirating an old game that steam charges $10-$20 for that might not even be supported on your OS anymore. I then ask myself what's the difference? Truth is not much :P It's all how you look at and try to justify it.
  2. Yes
  3. In the last year, can't remember specific day nor month for that matter.
  4. F.E.A.R. Platinum
  5. Didn't want to spend $10 on an old game that I was unsure would work on my computer.

  1. My stance is I try to avoid it as much as possible for all forms of media. I always prefer to buy physical copies or steam games. With sales these days the prices aren't even that outrageous (at least for steam in that case). Music has plenty of streaming services online that suffice for my needs and occasionally I'll buy an album for a band I particularly like. And I pay for my favorite video services and try to find legal streams for nearly everything I want to watch. If not then oh well I can wait. HOWEVER I will not deny having ever pirated. The times when I have was usually when said media was so extremely hard to come by in my area in a legal form that was pretty much my only choice. The big example here is old outdated games (can any of us honestly say they've never used an emulator??) or anime that wasn't licensed for distribution or streaming. I will admit that I have an R4 for my ds and have played many a game through that, but to be fair I ended up buying at least half of those afterwards.
  2. Yes.
  3. I don't even know it's been that long. It's been at least a couple of years honestly. Have so much steam backlog that I haven't needed or wanted to.
  4. Professor Layton and the Unwound Future.
  5. I didn't have the money at the time and reaallllyyy wanted to play it after beating the 2nd game in the series. Ended up buying it and the later games when I could.

  1. Be kind, don't hurt yourself, and don't hurt others.
^Applies to both the consumers and the devs/publishers (it's much more nuanced than that, but that's the gist of my stance)

I actually pirated a lot of games... The reasons could be:

  1. I want to try it out before I buy it.

  2. I cannot afford the price at the moment, this I will actually buy it afterwards.

  3. Sometimes pirated version is better than legal version, ridiculous. I had a game I already bought but got to pirate it to make it better.

  4. Some of the games just don't worth it. But I still want to try an hour or two to see how s***ty(or underrated) it is.

  5. Some games are so old that I couldn't buy them anywhere.

I used to pirate most of the games I wanted to play before early 21 century. Because in Hong Kong piracy was just too popular that I don't even know they are illegal when I was small, I thought they are just cheaper version with cheap packaging. Then I realized it is not(But I still pirate a lot). But I changed my mind so much when I study Multimedia in Institute, because I finally get the feeling of creating a product/idea and everybody like it, but no one pay money or compliment, and even steal your work.

In my point of view I treat paying the game(or whatever digital/non-digital artwork) as a compliment/respect to the creator, more than buying the right to play it.

Edit 1: Forgot to write point 5.

If at least you don't pay someone else for game developers work (buying the pirate game), it's not THAT big deal, you still do merchandising. I "agree" with it if I think the price is somewhat unfair, some companies have already made tons of money selling old games, no need to sell a 10 years old game (Morrowind comes to mind) for $10~20, just put 'em for free or something like water price...

Have you ever pirated a game?
Yes

When was the last time you pirated a game?
More than 1 year ago

What game was it?
GTA: San Andreas

Why did you do it?
The game is old, has no achievements, I didn't want any kind of multiplayer (don't even think there's a official multiplayer), I saw no reason to pay for it.

If you consider emulators as piracy, well... I'm a big pirate O.o
There's that "trying-as-a-demo-piracy" thing that is TOTALLY valid if no demo is provided.

I dont mind if someone pirates a game. That person is not taking something away from a company, rather makes a copy for himself. People need to understand that pirated game =/= loss for the dev. Most people who pirate games, wouldn't even consider buying them in the first place so there was no potential customer to begin with. I have never pirated a game, but a friend gave me a cracked version of skyrim when it first came out. I don't pirate myself because I take pride in my steam game collection. That being said, I bought skyrim shortly after.

The only games I would consider "pirated" are n64 games I play on an emulator. Just because I dont feel like buying an old n64 just for that.

Too lazy to answer all but half the games I actually paid for(that is not wins from giveaways or bundles) were games I had pirated, played and when I had a bit of money decided to buy. Same thing for the hundreds of books I downloaded(only bought a hundred or so at this point though).

  1. Depends:
    A) If you pirated an indie game you should die.
    B) If you pirated a non-indie game I still cannot consider you a serious gamer, but can be worse.
    C) If you pirated a game because it's rare or too old and you basically have no choice, better that than not playing it at all I guess.
    D) If you pirated a game for benchmark/testing/demoing it's alright, unless you continue playing without buying it.

  2. Yes, I've been young and didn't care, but I do not do it anymore if I can avoid it. I often buy games that I pirated in the past, like I did for Legacy of Kain Defiance.

  3. Probably during 2013

  4. Can't remember

  5. Rare console game not sold anymore

  1. I think pirating video games is reprehensible, with the exception of games that are unavailable to purchase new. If someone wants Full Throttle or Grim Fandango, for example, they're out of luck.
  2. Yes, back when my options for purchasing games were very limited (due to physical constraints).
  3. Must've been about 15 years ago.
  4. Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen
  5. It wasn't available to purchase anywhere locally.

I was pirating games a long time ago and I do not intend to do that again, but the license thing with Deadpool makes me want to pirate it, because I was looking forward to buying it and then they pulled it, shame on Activision and Marvel for that :/
