Not sure if they did it to be "controversial" or "different" (seems everyone's doing it these days), but for me it makes no difference. Gays are a part of life and human culture and it makes sense to me that they're represented in gaming accordingly.
I don't care what anyone's sexuality is, and care even less about the sexuality of a fictional character.

There is no special reason to do this, only money, i can explain: Whats the most "popular" thing right now and in the past years started as "mainstream"? How YOU make YOUR game more popular and more sold?

YOU HAVE TO have some gay or other stuff like this. Video game have more and more gay character, and even in TV shows there is at least one gay.
Tracer is gay, Super girl's sister is gay, pretty sure one character in the new Mass Effect will be gay as well.
You also need some people of color, you can't create a "homophobic and racist" game/show anymore (meaning only white and straght people, but show with only black is OK, because anti-white racism does not exist....). It's not good for the comfort zone of justice warrior.

So Tracer has been canonically confirmed in a relationship with Emily, I think it's a very nice and a very bold move by the OW team for two reasons.
1st of all. We have Zarya, who has a butchy look and people's bets were on her to be LGBT. So it's a nice bait and switch there. Then Tracer is the flagship of the game, or at least used to be. She is the most recognized character and the most present one on OW material, making it cool for the amount of exposure this will get.
Now, how will the gaming world, and or certain parts of it react to this.
