So Tracer has been canonically confirmed in a relationship with Emily, I think it's a very nice and a very bold move by the OW team for two reasons.

1st of all. We have Zarya, who has a butchy look and people's bets were on her to be LGBT. So it's a nice bait and switch there. Then Tracer is the flagship of the game, or at least used to be. She is the most recognized character and the most present one on OW material, making it cool for the amount of exposure this will get.

Now, how will the gaming world, and or certain parts of it react to this.

Also the comic where this was revealed is not accessible on Russia

100% confirmed homosexual or could still be bisexual?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Honestly doesn't matter. The relationship she's in is homosexual, and that's the key point.
Trying to pin down her overall sexuality is only going to be a negative thing for both the character and for LGBTs in general, since such preferences can change for individuals with time and/or experience. Trying to force people into preconceived structures is the same issue that's supporting heteronormative thought. By contrast, simply accepting that sex is a physical activity people sometimes engage in, and that people are of different genders, and that sometimes those two concepts overlap, is a far healthier perspective.
In other words, rather than "Team A" "Team B" or "Team C" it becomes "Hey, this character is in a healthy relationship with another individual of the same gender" (as opposed to "This character is boning a chick. I wonder if this character bones guys as well.")

If you're bisexual, or have investment in that angle, I fully acknowledge your sentiments, and understand you weren't approaching it from the above angle. And if it came down to writing a character bio, it'd be relevant (albeit tasteless trivia and counter-productive presentation, for the reasons mentioned above). But simply showing the relationship and not trying to label it or overexplain it, that's what gives it legitimacy and respect, rather than making a spectacle or trying to force a label onto it.

In other words, if we see her with a guy later, then we can go "Oh, she's bi/sexually-fluid/demi-sexual/pansexual/etc". But trying to force a firm answer outside of the narrative (especially with so many labels available) is more problematic than not.

The best words are "Pie" "in" "my" and "mouth".
When you combine them, magic happens. 😊

Because they're also comic story characters and comic stories often have love stories which by their very nature reveal the main characters' sexualities(as is the case here)?

Man, Blizzard is really ripping off TF2 big time. In TF2, anyone's sexuality wasn't relevant. Except pyros, because no one knew what that thing was.

In the TF2 comics, the Soldier is involved with the Heavy's sister, the Spy is involved with the Scout's mother, and the Scout is futilely pursuing Miss Pauling (who the comic's author tweeted was gay; that's not considered canon). I don't think any of this comes up in the game - they're not that kind of game - but the comics are meant to flesh out the characters.

Given the nature of the team-based hero shooter subgenre and how long TF2's been around, I think it would have been more surprising if character sexuality never came up (no character falling for a damsel in distress, getting caught up in a love triangle, mentioning having a wife, flirting with another of the characters, or one of the many other storytelling tropes that either hinge on or reveal a character's sexuality).

Hey, good for her. I just wish her gf would talk some sense into her and she loses those terrible ski goggles and spandex pants. Come on, Blizzard art team. Fix yer focking "art".

Also, about Zarya, has it been firmly established that she is strictly hetero? She could turn out to be gay still, or not? Butch stereotypes not withstanding, I still think it would have had an impact to make her character LGBT, considering her origins and the current social/political/cultural climate in Russia. Or for that matter, any other character from a similarly restrictive socio-political environment. OR...dramatic music... would that be seen as even more of an affront by an American company flexing its cultural hegemony/imperialism muscles to push an "agenda" and "Western values" while basking in the glory of its own moral superiority? I mean, like, how dare they, yeah?? VIDEO GAMES IN THE 21st CENTURY! REAL LIFE INTERNET DRAMA! RIOTING IN THE... FORUMS!

Seriously, as positive of a development as this may be, I just wished that gamers who live on the internet with too much time on their handspeople wouldn't start getting their knickers in a twist over who gets to snoggle whom in a work of fiction (or, you know, in real life). Shouldn't it be the most normal, mundane thing in the world that a human being has an actual love life? We're diverting from the issues that matter here: Blizzard needs to do something about those godawful fugly goggles and the spandex.

Also: Currently too busy/having too much fun in Titanfall 2 to really care about Overwatch. Free weekend was fun, though. I'll buy when it's 50% off or less.

Who cares, its just marketing and promotion for a game.. it has fundamentally no effect on the game itself, or the people who make the porn for the game. Honestly, she could identify as a fish from mars and have a sexual connection to bicycles, and it wouldn't change anything... I'm mostly just surprised someone was so excited by a lesbian they had to make a post about it.

Who the fuck cares? It's not a game with a story, why are they writing shit like this in just to appease the SJW crowd? I have zero problems with homosexuality but this kind of pandering is just retarded.

Because, from the beginning, Blizzard gave the game tons of story outside of the actual game. They've done cinematics, comics, and such, again, from the beginning. Overwatch is a game with no campaign, and yet it has a huge story to it. The characters have backstories that are still being expanded on, the world is continually having more brought to light.

What amazes me most is that people are reacting to this as if it's some sort of landmark event. Is this how slow progress is in Blizzard's ecosystem that people are absolutely gobsmacked at there being a lesbian character?

I enjoy so much seeing things like that. Some people maybe think it's strange because it's just a videogame but this help so much for the LGTB world, because Blizzard put a personality in her and this is just another of the facts arround her, not all what she is. I preffer so much this way, because the sexuality of a person doesn't define his/her, it's just another fact of their lives.
Good Job Blizzard ^^

You know, it really makes me sad that gay people are pretty much taboo in video games.

A character is gay? Oh shit son, they're just doing that to pander to the SJW crowd. That's the only reason that gay person even exists! Fuck them for doing this!

No gay characters? Fuck these bigots! How dare they act like gays don't exist!?

Why can't a character just be gay, because they're gay? Why does it have to turn into some huge deal?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Because they're characters not real people? People make choices on behalf of them.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That doesn't change my point at all?

Again, why can't a character just be gay without it being some huge deal?

Permalink

Because those people are questioning why they are chosen as gays, not why they are gays.

I don't care about both ways though. I do like to think them as how I imagine, not as how creators imagine.

Not really that big of a deal. I don't really see how this adds any depth to the character other than pandering to a certain crowd. Have the same feelings towards romantic interests that adds nothing to the plot or character development in a movie or book. But I suppose this does conveniently give Blizzard free marketing to improve their game's sales around the coming holiday. So more sales = longer support and more updates for the game = yay.
TLDR: It's okay. Doesn't really add or take away any depth to the character, but the additional sales from the marketing may help boost the OW community and help Blizzard get more revenue.

so many angry people. they must think the same when they see a black character, or indian, chinese, latino, one that's fat, or bald, or talks in another language...
anything that's not "normal" to their standards will bother these idiots than complain all the time.

devs try to include as many archetypes as they can in games to make people feel identified/connected to it.
just deal with it, peasants. you aren't the center of the world, and no one cares you get offended with gay characters. o/

Pretty funny actually how peole are screaming "pandering!" at the top of their lungs while patting themselves on the back for seeing through the alledged "marketing ploy" by evil cynical corporate Blizzard. Congrats, you so clever.

As if practically every single mainstream video game in existence that features a female character of some sort in any capacity didn't, err, "pander" to perpetually horny (often teenage) males. How about the same Blizzard whose entirety of the PR materials for the ultimately cancelled StarCraft: Ghost seemed to be comprised of Nova's prominent ass cheeks (would link to it, but I'm on mobile atm, and typing this is painful enough)? Her Hawtness the Zergqueen Kerrigan in high heels shoving her butt in the camera? Totally not pandering to the male audience and integral to the character. Widowmaker as a sexy femme fatale? Nope, no marketing considerations of any sort fed into the decision making process for that particular character. But don't they dare change that (lame-)ass victory pose for Tracer. That would be a suppression of First Amendment rights devised and engineered by the Political Correctness Industrial Complex and tantamount to apartheid and a war crime under the Geneva convention. Of course.

Look, I don't mind if characters are portrayed as beautiful and sexy. I enjoy it often, even. Hot people are pleasing to look at, it's only natural. And I don't want to get in to the whole female objectification and the male gaze in media debate, even though I've touched on it above. Rather, the point I want to make is that there seems to be a double standard at work that people often don't seem to realise while pointing fingers and claiming they won't be so easily marketed to. It's pretty ridiculous, to be honest. Would love sit around and chew the fat more but my stop is coming up now and I gotta go get a dress for me wife.

I wanted to point out this because you just classified the comic as pandering because it's that compared to your single point of preference.
