The SAGRADA FAMILIA Challenge !

Where: Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain
What: The most visited monument in Spain.

Interesting facts

  • It's been in construction for more than a century and is still not done. Started in 1882, the construction of the Sagrada Familia has been going ever since. It's been recently announced it's expected to be finished in 2026, for the centennial of Gaudí’s death. It would have taken even longer without the use of computers starting in the 1980s. In comparaison, the Great Pyramid only took 20 years to build.

  • The architect, Antoni Gaudi (whose amazing work can be seen all over Barcelona), dedicated 40 years of his life to it. Even though he knew he wouldn't see the completion of his biggest project during his lifetime, only 25% of the church was completed when he passed. Only one of the towers was erected at the time and one of the 3 facades was completed.

  • In 1926, Gaudi was hit by a tram on his way to his daily visit to the church for his prayer and confession. He lost consciousness and because of his clothing and lack of papers, he was assumed to be a beggar, and as such he didn't receive immediate help. He was brought to the hospital but only received rudimentary care. By the time he was recognized on the following day, it was too late for anything to be done as his condition was too deteriorated. He died 3 days after his accident, on June 10, at the age of 73. He's buried in the crypt of the Sagrada Familia.

  • When completed, it will be the tallest religious building in all of Europe. The central tower in the middle will reach 170 meters high. Though, that number is no coincidence. Gaudi, who was a very pious man, believed no man-made structure should be higher than God's work. Montjuïc, Barcelona's highest point, is 1m higher than the Sagrada Familia's final size.

  • The final design includes 18 towers, even if for now only 8 are finished. They will represent the 12 apostles, the 4 evangelists, the virgin Mary and finally, the central tower would represent Jesus.

  • Most of Gaudi's original plans and models have been destroyed during the civil war in 1936 when anarchists set fire to the crypt. Thankfully, enough could be saved and pieced together, even though many people argue the final building will be far away from Gaudi's style and vision.

  • The inside is even more amazing than the outside. You can argue it's my personal opinion, but once you step inside the Sagrada Familia, it's hard to not be impressed by the interior's stunning design. (Please check the photos below for a view at some of the stained glass artwork.)

  • Everything has a hidden symbolism. One of my favorite part are the interior pillars which are designed to look like trees when you look up at them. One pillar has a turtle at its base, and another a tortoise to show the balance between land and sea. (All of Gaudi's work was heavily influenced by nature)

  • The money of your ticket will keep the building going as the project is not funded either by the state or the church, but by private funds and the admissions/donations of the visitors.

And to conclude this (long, sorry) list of facts, if you ever go to Barcelona, I'd highly recommend taking time to visit the Sagrada Familia. Thanks for reading if you reached this, I hope you enjoyed the trip.

GOOD LUCK on the challenge! Create some breath-taking Sagrada Familia for some awesome GA wins!

PS: Today (Sept 11th) happens to be Catalonia's national day so happy national day to any catalan on SG!

Aaaand I'm done :D
I really should be asleep right now, but I couldn't stop once I got started. Felt inspired by Gaudi's art, often incorporating the complete spectrum of colours, so I was imagining the building at night, different parts illuminated with different coloured lights.
I removed the numbers and added a few extra lines, I hope that's OK but if not I can add them back easily enough!

Very very nice!

It's up to the designers decision if to leave or remove the numbers... and adding lines is fine-- that is adding detail.

And I'm finally done with mine. I tried to apply the style of another Gaudi's building (The casa batllo) to the sagrada familia but it didn't come out quite as what i had in mind.

Really love this... just wondering about the white place just above the triangle in top middle of picture... is that sky back there? You might want to add a little bit of shading with purple so we see that it is sky.

BTW, I removed tree lines in Eiffel picture and replaced them with my own, so I do this constantly. I think we need to ask Jeff if this is ok and if it is how many lines we are allowed to remove.

It's very creative, thanks for your submission!

As for the validity of the entry, you'll have to wait for Jeff's verdict I guess. I'm with Nordhbane on that one, I think it should use the lines from the dots as it's part of the challenge, but Jeff will give you the final answer.

In any case, it's a really fun way to transform the monument :)

The rules as written first WERE:

No. 3 --All submissions must be completed using the original dot-to-dot picture. (no freehand drawings, different views etc.)

No. 4-- You can add detailed drawings to your dot-to-dot, adding shading or enhancements to background (clouds etc...) or details of ANY kind to make your dot-to-dot even more stunning!!

Number 3 has been modified with added clarification that will help in this discussion.

No. 3-- All submissions must be completed using the original dot-to-dot picture. (no freehand drawings, different views etc.) Original lines must be kept in the final submission. Dots and numbers, however, may be kept or deleted from final submission.

NOTE: Because it was unclear we will accept submissions this week but future weeks must retain all original lines.
