Today I started going to gym. I've been always slim all my life no matter how much I eat but this didn't bother me most of the time. I was happy with my body. I used to swim every summer non-stop for three months whole day, play volleyball, run, ride a bike until I got into college in another city. I stopped doing most of these since, yet sadly I ended up being more thin. Couple years ago I had a surgery for one of my lungs, some family issues, then graduation and unemployment, along with a 'little' depression... all affected my overall health badly. Last time I checked (after surgery) I was 55 kg, today I learned that I reached a new low, just 50 kg, phew!

And my God I feel so weak, today I was in gym (for the first time) for just 90 minutes and I was tired as hell. I wasn't able to lift my arm above my head even after couple hours. I only worked with the lightest weights. The instructor gave me a meal plan for gaining weight. I don't know whether it will actually help but I really want, seriously I need to gain at least 15 kg. I will start riding bike again on the days that I am not in the gym and eat more!

Have you ever been in a similar situation, had problems with your weight etc., maybe you can share some tips. Enjoy one little present as well while thinking.

Are you going to gym?

Yeah for losing weight
I like muscles
I am trying to gain weight actually
I just want to be fit, nothing much
Naaah, ain't nobody got time for that

I'm actually required to stay "in shape" for work now, but I don't go to the gym.
I either work out at home (weights, drumming) or go to Shotokan a couple times/week (used to be 5 days/week)
I try to eat right, but damn that pizza .... at 6-4 and 220# (might be 225#, but I don't want to know!), I think I'm doing alright.

I was scrawny when I was younger, until I joined the swim team as a long distance swimmer. I then swung a hammer for many years, which really bulked me up. I'd definitely recommend swimming over weights for strength/endurance development any day. On top of that, finding a healthy weight-gaining diet plan would be important, but I'm no nutritionist, so I won't presume to recommend one. Besides, as I said, I do so enjoy the (not so) occasional pizza. There are whole sites with experts on the subject. I'd suggest checking some out.

The best advice I can give is find a healthy regimen and stick to it. Commitment is the most difficult part in my opinion. It's far to easy to say "I can take a break today" or "this pie has apples in it, apples are good for me!" (now I want pie). Good luck in all your endeavors, though! I know you can do it. :)

Been working out for about 3 or 4 years.

I got really serious with it the last year or so.
I try to go 5 times a week. I enjoy all the benefits of working out.

I've been meaning to make a thread similar on SG lol.
I think everyone should work out, not even for the physical state, but it is also great for the mental state. :p

I want to, but I think I'll have to gain some weight first. I have super high metabolism or something, so high that I could literally do nothing but eat all day and still not gain weight. It's a bit sad.

Nah. I'm chunky, could use to trim down and get a little muscle, but really I don't have the focus for it. By the time I get home from my totally undemanding work, it feels like an impossible feat to get on my exercise bike. Not from the physical exertion but the mental exhaustion. Tedium and boredom carries over and makes even the short 10-minute blast session feel agonisingly slow, and apparently my shoulders have decided to hate me so my gradual noob-level pushups have ground to a halt.

I make the excuse to get off the bus home from work early to walk a mile every few days, but that's really about it. Occupying my mind is the hardest part, and even back when that was less of an issue, my exercise bikes seat renders my googlies 100% numb after 20 minutes due to pinching some kinda butt-nerve, so I have to take breaks which similarly brings me back out of the workout zone.

I think I'll stick with staying chunky until I can muster the (mental) energy again. Watching what I eat is probably going to have more of an effect for the time being. Then again maybe I've slowly increased the bike tension too high and that's stopping me from zoning out and enjoying the little chore properly, and maybe I shouldn't be using my little dumbells at the same time as the bike, hmm. I did have a break from the routine at the start of the year, and picking it back up was the hard part that I tripped at.

Hmmmmmm.

I've always been bad about exercising for the sake of it. Just too boring for me. Also not much of a fan of competitive sports. I'd rather dance or practice karate for example. Still, it's possible to do some interesting workouts at home with Kinect or a dance mat and Crypt of the Necrodancer. (Speaking of which, I should probably buy it and dig up my old dance mat after my wife's kicked the bucket.)

Sadly I don't even have those excuses. I don't have the money to dip into consoles any more, so I can't even get 'secret exercise'. Though I suppose carrying some groceries a mile home might count as some tiny exercise, my shoulder and elbow certainly grouches about carrying my Pepsi Max emergency supply back. |D

Walking counts as exercise, but carrying heavy stuff doesn't count unless you're actively using your muscles for it. If your muscles are loose and most of the weight is on the joints it's not that good.

Anyway, a basic dance mat plus Crypt of the Necrodancer should cost less than $20 (or 20 quid), so it's not such a huge expenditure. It's not a full body workout, but it's probably better than nothing.

Oh yeah, I get that. Most of that aspect of the exercise is due to usually buying something that jabs me in the leg when I carry it home, forcing me to walk with the carrying arm slightly extended and locked in an annoying position with more stress on the muscle than just the joints. Oh the woes of basic adult functionality, haha :P

As for the dance mat, it would be tempting but I don't have the space for it, given my PC setup is in a tiny room with no flail allowance. Great idea that I'll keep for a backup though. Fresh ideas are the lifeblood of the exercise deprived ;)

But I go through two episodes of a long podcast every day just on transit to and from work! :s
I burn out by the time I'm home, haha.

Speaking of which, I really should get around to donating to the Maximum Fun podcast network. All dat free comedy banter, yo.
(get on that Adventure Zone podcast train from episode 1, ya nerds <3)

I think I'll just dial down the resistance a bit and try less of a 10-minute blast workout and revert to 'lazy exercise' until my body gets back up to speed. I mean, once you're warmed up and your shuffle playlist throws on one of 'those' tunes, you can't help but go crazy for a few minutes. Guess I just need to trick myself back into the routine.

I started off at 50kg also (at 1m70 / 5'7) and now, almost 6 years later I'm at 66kg and fit as hell. Best decision of my life.
Keep going brother, lift heavy and eats lots of food and you'll make it. But you better be in it for the long run!

I went to the gym to lose weight. My instructor was incredible and I had great results.
Some years now I keep balanced diet as possible and keep fit with running, crossfit and the chin-up / pull-up bars in front of my building.
I have one tip for you:
Eat balanced meals and listen only to your instructor.
If you don't see results, change the plan or the instructor. Don't listen to all the "experts" on the web, because they will tell you what works for them. Rarely they are professionals in the area. If you are serious enough, you will gain knowledge what works on you and you will make your own meal- and exercise plans.
Best of luck, patience and determination ( =

Yes and no, I've not been there often lately because of too much other stuff to do, but I'm starting to go more often in a few days when my exams are over.
I was pretty thin as well for most of my life until I started doing more sports about 7 years ago, now I'm pretty fit, but still feel weak lately ^^ I'm 1.84m and 74kg and was 64 when I started, max was at 78kg.

I voted 'Naaah, ain't nobody got time for that', but really, I never liked going to a gym even when I had more free time. I don't like workouts for the sake of workouts. Too boring for me. But yeah, I could use some workout. Metabolism isn't what it used to be, so I'm a tad overweight and I can feel that I'm weaker than I used to be. Still not motivated enough to do anything. My wife's workplace started doing workouts twice a week, and I'm kind of envious of that.

On and off.

I actually went through multiple stages from losing weight, getting fit to just putting on some muscle. Nowadays I find myself rotating between the last two because I relapse and can't stick to a regular schedule anymore due to work.

And my God I feel so weak, today I was in gym (for the first time) for just 90 minutes and I was tired as hell. I wasn't able to lift my arm above my head even after couple hours. I only worked with the lightest weights.

That's perfectly normal for your first visit. Hell, first WEEK will probably be hell as you shake up muscles you didn't even know you have. Just follow the routine your instructor comes up with until you're comfortable enough setting up your own. Best advice would be to focus on different muscle groups on different days so parts of your body can get a rest while you work on others.

Just take it easy at first because you don't want to get muscle inflammation and then have to skip a week to get better. Consistency is key.

Today we did bunch of things again I changed a lot of equipments, I keep forgetting their names. And my arms still hurt, I had to buy a muscle relaxant. He recommended that I should use carbohydrate powder.

To be fair, instructors will also try to sell you stuff you can, imagine the wonder, buy at the very gym you're at.

I've always been in the middle, around 58-62kg for 174cm, not thin, but not thick, w/o doing much activity, and eating decently. I wasn't that much into sports,I did lift a bit by myself, when I had some free time, but that's all.
Then I entered uni, took around 25kg in a year, and then came the day where I asked "since when can't I run as I want ?".
I gave a shot at a cheap gym, but meh, people weren't that friendly and everything, so I totaly gave up going to the gym.
I ended buying a few things to make sports at home, it's cheaper and easier to do it while watching some serie, or twitch stream.
It actually takes a lot of space, but it saves time, and money ! So no gym for me, the only ones I'll keep going to are Pokemon Gym.
