SO I've been trying to install the original Thief, The Dark Project from its silvery shiny CD thingy that is 15 years old by now.
after installing, it starts crashing almost instantly. I need to play it again for a review, i promised the readers of my blog.

I have a tough decision to make now:

  1. I go down to the basement, grab the haul 14 year old Win 98 rig and play it on that
  2. Setup a virtual machine.

What should it be?

i could, yes, but i don't want to. also, doesn't mean it works any better with a pirated version.

If it's the CD's problem then a pirated version would work... plus, you're not actually "pirating" it.. since you own it, amirite? :3

Use DosBox (does this work for Thief? Not sure) or use Linux with Wine.
Way better than a VM.

it uses direct x, so DosBox is not an option, the games from that era didn't age too well in general, and i don't want to make it look worse by having to use a software renderer.

Is it definitely the CD that's causing the problem? I'm sure there are some fixes for modern OSes if you Google about a bit.

Google it, there are loads of guides to get it to run on Win 7 or w/e you're running.

Might sound stupid but did you try starting the game in compatibility mode?

yep. also, keep asking stupid sounding questions, you don't know how much people want to facepalm themselves when they realize that they overlooked the simplest things :)

You could get the GOG version, it might be optimized for modern OS. Everything is on sale right now, you might also want to check out their discussion boards for extra tips.

EDIT: also I remember reading something about a new fan patch released very recently which greatly improves the game (widescreen support, things like that). Try looking it up, it could work...
