Omg, thank you for decreasing the time limit to change our usernames from 1 year to 30 days! I didn't think this would be implemented, with the hostility that the community showed towards that idea every time it was suggested.
But maybe it would be better to log usernames for at least 31 days? Because if a user changed their username and then wanted to go back to their previous one and someone else already took it, they would be unable to do so. But with the previous username being logged for 31 days they could go back to it in 30 days.
Also, the comment history on SteamTrades is awesome, but can you please also implement it on SteamGifts? That would completely remove the need for ESGST to track people's comments.
Thank you for the amazing updates, cg!

About May 11, 2018 changes: I agree that users should have the freedom to change their username but the 1 month limit seems a little short. Maybe 3 months or so to deter people from fooling around with the name-change system. Also since there's no log of old usernames, and that's a welcomed change, it's fine if you can change to whatever arbitrary name you choose (not offensive by common standards of course) and if it happens to be some user's old name, so be it. There shouldn't be a copyright in a name and this talk about impresonators can only go so far. People are afraid as if suddenly thousands of users will try to impersonate others, it's a bit overreacting. Some impersonators may try, they may succeed and they may get caught. No reason to punish all the rest of them/us and deprive from someone a username no longer active and abandoned, just because it was used at some point. Just because I happen to have found the coolest username evah (top 3 at least :p ) it doesn't mean I have a hold on it and in case I change have the "right" to reclaim it. All's fair in love and ..gaming..

+1 as this new feature will surely be abused by some who like to have a situation of chaos and confusion so that they will be removed from BL or that their SG comments or forum behavior are forgotten.

We no longer log previous usernames, since they're personal data.
Maybe remove usernames in general? Everybody has to login with their steam account so maybe use steam username instead?

Steam Usernames are not unique, so we would end up with several users having the same nickname. attending discussions would become impossible, because you can never know if the adam123 you responded to is the same person you were previously talking to. Not to mention impersonation - I change my steam username to propofolpls, change avatar to yours and do some nasty shit a lot of people will link with you instead of me.

Ok - that would be a problem.
Is there no way to identify steam user fast? I mean - we can tell that somebody is impersonator by studying their steam profile but yeah - in the heat of discussion that will be impossible.

only by their unique SteamID - but it's either random set of letters and numbers or just numbers, for example your ID is 76561198082881386. It would still be pretty useless in discussions thou, because such random sets of numbers are so hard to remember that you won't remember what was the number of any other user anyway. That's why unique nicknames in discussion forums are important thing.

Let him who hath understanding reckon the number of the Beast
For it is a human number, its number is seventy-six quadrillion, five hundred sixty-one trillion, one hundred ninety-eight billion, eighty-two million, eight hundred eighty-one thousand, three hundred eighty-six.

you can now change your username to one that was previously used by another user.
Usernames can now be changed every 30 days, instead of once a year.
Impersonators rejoice!

That would actually do more to protect peoples personal data and identity. The option of changing names willy-nilly undermines it.

I'm not a lawyer, but I'm pretty sure that's not how it works. A user name allows you to associate a user with personal data. It is not, in and of itself, the kind of personal data that should not be logged. If keeping a history of user names is necessary for proper operation of the site, you'd certainly be allowed to keep them (for a period reasonable to the use). At the very least, you can make a good argument for tracking the last user name and the date at which a change happened, to catch the most flagrant abuses. With one change every 30 days, keeping a history of one name seems reasonable and sufficient -- if an impersonator isn't acted on in 30 days, you've got bigger problems. Having no record at all seems iffy (notwithstanding that users could and should check these things themselves using Steam profiles).

Fixed an issue that would cause a comment not to be posted if the name of the discussion, ticket, or giveaway changed while the user was writing their comment.
Finally! Thank you!
