  • Fixed a performance issue with the database query planner, which was incorrectly choosing an index in rare situations.

  • Annual renewal for SteamGifts' web servers and task server is coming up, so I'm running tests this week with smaller instances. There's been a number of performance improvements this year, and we should be able to scale down resources to reduce costs.
  • Removed various automated tasks that were pulling regional pricing information for the sales page that was previously removed. The wishlist page also displayed regional pricing, but it has been switched to USD. Database has been cleared of regional pricing and sales data.

Nice updates, it was always a risk when there was a reroll wondering if the person may have passed along the key to someone else after seeing it. I never personally ran into anyone who did that, thankfully, but this should reduce some of the cold feet...

Perhaps there should be a message about being sure you don't already own the game before revealing the key?

This may make some people just mark an already owned game as "Received" rather than going through the hassle of a reroll if they discover that they already owned the game after they revealed the key.

Based on my experience with winning and giving away a game since this change, there is no warning or instructions to the winner, it just reveals the key when you click to reveal the key. And for the giveaway there is a little icon to indicate that it has been revealed.

So at least we'll know for sure that the key hasn't been viewed yet. But otherwise, they can just give it to a friend and claim it was already used or whatever like they normally could. Scammers gonna scam.

I'm not really talking about scammers.

Let's just say that I enter a GA for a game I don't own. Before that GA ends, I get that game from some other source and redeem it to my account. I forget about the original GA and win.

I reveal the key (neglecting to check if I already own it), and when I try to redeem, it says "already owned".

This is the dilemma. What do I do? If I request a reroll, will it automatically be denied due to having revealed the key? Or is it just the same as it was before?

If the reroll is granted and the key turns out to be a duplicate, am I on the hook for it now since I revealed the key even though it might have been a duplicate all along?

I guess I am just wondering how this now affects liability, as opposed to the old method. I am not sure what would happen if a reroll was a dup before, but I can see how in the above case that the GA winner would be much more suspected of foul play than they might have been before (you shouldn't have revealed the key if you already owned it, so now you are responsible!).

And if this is the case, there is much more incentive for the original GA winner to violate the rules and just mark the key as received and give it away to a friend rather than risk the key being a duplicate and being accused of using it and requesting a reroll.

Plus now, for every win, there is an extra step (double check that you don't already own the game before revealing the key), whereas before you could just try to redeem it and act appropriately based on the result (redeemed, already owned, or duplicate).
There may be many people who just don't want to do that extra step for every win...

Actually, if everything is just like it was before (as your responses indicate), then they don't need to pay attention. Unless there is a penalty for revealing the key when you already own the game, there is no reason not to do it other than being nice.

I suppose that leaving the key unrevealed absolves the original GA winner of any culpability if the key is a dupe, but I don't know that they had any culpability before this change, so I don't know if it is different now.
