Just to give you an idea of what quality headphones look like, check this out.
Now, getting back to your price range, you need to decide what you're willing to give up in order to get the price down. Sound quality? 3-D positioning? Microphone? Durability? Warrantee/repairs? Once you know your basic requirements in a headset, you can compare those products which fulfill them.

Err...not really, high sound quality IS one size fits all, because you can't say, 'Oh, these things sound like shit, but they are high quality'...Sennheiser PC350's and 360's are amazing, 350's are closed headphones, 260's are open. There is a preference choice there, but they both have amazing drivers and microphones.

If you're looking for music quality, and keeping in mind your price range, I'd go with Sennheiser HD 4x9 series. For a higher x, sounds gets more crispy and less bassy, so if you want more distinctive highs and lows, get HD 449, but if you like your music with more bass, go for HD 419. I got myself a HD 439 and they're the best headphones for less than $200 I've ever tried.
However, if you like to play FPS or any other games that require great positional audio, they're not your pick, and you'd probably be better off with headphones that offer surround sound, either virtual or "real". I don't have mych experience with those, so can't really help you there :(

The best way to figure out the best headphone for you, however, is to physically go to a store with a large selection and try them on, if it's possible. Everyone has a different way they perceive sounds, hence why so many different recommendations on this thread :)

I was in the market a couple years ago for a new set of headphones. I had a low budget but wanted to get something decent that would cover my ears and go over my head instead of behind the neck. I decided on the TekNMotion Yapster TM-YB100A: http://www.amazon.com/Universal-Stereo-Gaming-Headset-TM-YB100A/dp/B001FY7LBQ
It blew away my expectations. It's got awesome sound clarity, range, and insulation. It was tight on my head (which is big) when I first got it, but I stretched it out a bit and it's been very comfortable ever since. :) I'd definitely recommend looking into it particularly if you've got a small budget (it's about $15 on amazon, so maybe £12?). It's held up through much abuse with only the slightest signs of wear and is very adjustable and has a nice long cord. :)
