What do you think of the sales?
I thought they would at least have the community vote sales, but now seeing just how bad it is I'll probably spend no more than $50 getting some of the games I really wanted. This winter sale is just a complete failure. Hopefully they will bring back the flash sales for the summer sale.

Mostly because I am not getting the deals I want. But also because I found that previous steam sales had a way to get people to take part of the sale to see what has changed. There would be daily sales that would change every day, flash sales would have you check every eight hours and the community vote sale to see what game receives a special discount every eight hours. Now steam just set all or most of the games on a sale price and there is little reason to check back to see if a game is on sale. This is what I hate about this winter sale. This is why I think it is a complete failure. And if Steam doesn't go back to their old ways I'm sure Steam will not be making a lot of money compared to previous sales.

Daily sales were nice. I think they did it because people are just gonna be returning their games for better prices every time the price changes and they didn't want to deal with the headache. Steam sadly is gonna be just fine after the sale, they probably are just getting a bigger cut from the total price of the game. Us as the consumer never knows how many copies of a game they sell during these things, but if it was bad during the November sale, they probably wouldn't have done the same format this time around.

Actually, I don't think they would be able to change format in those few weeks between sales. They ask for discount prices for months in advance, there would be total information overload if they would ask publishers/developers to sent them updated prices in those 3 weeks between Black Friday and Xmas sale.

They haven't even bother to come up with some kind of game or something like that (not that I enjoy playing, but it's the thought that counts). Gaben has trully forsaken us :(

probably the most terrible winter sales ever i have seen

I'm pretty sure they're still in the process of adding/updating discounts, like they did in the exploration sale - took a while for all discounts to be added.
Also, I tried to a Flash GA event to make up for the missing flash sales (a bit), so far about 3 people joined in XD

"Officially dead" = "Pretty much the same except now I have a backlog so I am more picky"

Considering that Underrail just came out of Early Access last week (and also had a 7% discount then), I'm not really sure what kind of discount you were expecting on it.

Personally I prefer this format for the sales rather than flash or daily deals.

I'm surprised just cause 3 is 20% off. I expected 15% off at least for a new game.

My wishlist is redirecting to my profile page.
This is brilliant.

What I did during the Summer Sale which actually worked fantastic was put a bunch of things on my wishlist, then check it twice a day to see if it's on flash sale. If it was, I bought it. If not, the remaining items I'd just buy on the last day.
They're appeasing the people that are too lazy to check Steam once a day even and it's extremely dumb.

It's due to refunds rather than appeasing the lazy.

I'd honestly rather have flash deals.
All you have to do is just wait to buy the games you want and buy them as they go on flash deals, and towards the end whatever games didn't go on flash sale you can just buy on the last day.
It's not that hard to do and it makes refunds mostly unnecessary unless you legitimately didn't like the game. If that's the case, then how about during the summer/winter sale, they made it so that whenever you refund a game, you can't buy it again for two weeks? That way, you can't just refund a game and buy it again because you're salty that it went on sale for less, and you can only refund it if you legitimately don't want it anymore because of the game not being to your liking.

You're making a suggestion to the wrong person if you legitimately want flash deals. Only Valve can give your idea the validation you want.
Jims' statement was binary, flash deals or refunds. In that case I'll take refunds. That's not to say that they have to be mutually exclusive, only that they currently are and that of the two I prefer the current state.

Aren't we all just voicing our opinions? It's not like Valve is famous for caring at all for what its customers think. It took nearly the entire community to be upset about paid mods for them to even consider it. There's no way they care about a suggestion made by one person.

I'm not sure you are just voicing your opinion but I can't say either way with certainty so I can only say that if I'm wrong then good and if not I've already said what I have to say in that instance.

Agree. At least you can plan your purchases beforehand.

discount arent very good, no flash sales, so they not going to change. nonAAA games dont have enough discounts, much-much better just to wait until they get bundled, no clue how ill burn my 90eur from wallet, i thought ill upload money aswell, but not a single game wroth to buy from my 200games wishlist because all price meh, bundled games could get from sgifts trade for gems much cheaper even from overpriced sellers, AAA games dont get much discounts and unlike at old times, base price nowadays never drop because of the sales, so not going to be cheaper. now my only hope that my country and whole east-EU will get finally a new region where prices more suitable for salaries, not like it will ever happen, well, i can keep playing my bundle games and other humans from these regions can keep pirating:-)

Wait a few hours for them to settle everything, not everything is discounted yet. Plus those AAA or super hyped titles never get high discount because you, people, are eager to play those silly games anyway and publishers/developers have zero point selling it for cheap. During the last Exploration sale I just opened my wishlist (with Steam Enhanced) and browsed — found quite many good indie gems with 70-90% off I'd like to play, therefore buying them. Stop being an old geezer arguing about liberals leading world order to a mess. P.S. Basically each vote option looks like "meh", "bah", "screw this", "whatever". At least one positive answer would be nice.

There was later a sale with auction of gems, where you could get free games as well.

Okay, there was also an event not so long ago with red/pink and some other teams where people from winning teams (per day) were getting top 3 games from their wishlists. Counts as free?

A lot of people don't understand why some people are upset.
It's not the fact that everything isn't discounted yet, it's the fact that the price of the games will NOT be changed at all during the whole sale. The flash dales and daily sales often were the best sales.

I personally prefer not lurking the sale pages and checking in every 4 hours to make sure I didn't miss something. It's also better for the devs, as they aren't forced to aggressively cannibalize their own prices in order to stay competitive.
Comment has been collapsed.
I can understand that.
But at the same time, there's almost no point of having a sale last this long if there is no change in prices. Might as well make it a 4day sale instead of a week and a half or whatever.

Well, tbh, before it was more of a waiting game and checking all the time for new discounts. Now they use cards to get pple to check back daily. I would have preferred they got us some mini event, but I'm not missing waiting for the whole duration of the sale to buy.
Comment has been collapsed.
Having us check in for cards would lead to fewer sales I think. When people were checking for flash sales or daily deals they were opening the store with the idea of wanting to buy something which seems conducive to impulse buying. Now we're opening the store with the idea of getting something for free.

Sales seem pretty legit to me. Everything I searched for I wanted has a decent discount applied.

Without the flash and daily sales it looks like many of our worst fears have been realized. I log on and what do I find....most of the games I want are barely even discounted. Seriously a 10% discount on one of them??! Come on Valve! Steam sales are officially dead to me now.
Would also like to add a few thoughts I've been having on the subject for a while now. The daily/flash/community deals all ended because the refund policy would have created a huge refund mess. For some this was a good enough excuse to end the deals outright. But I've been thinking there were plenty of solutions that could have been implemented to keep those deals. For instance wouldn't it have been good enough to post alert notices under the games in your cart that are being considered for daily/community deals. Sure you'd lose the big element of surprise but if it's worth you'd at least still have the deals. The notice would state that buying the game anyway right now would void you of a refund or at least until after the daily/community deal had ended to stop refund influxes.
And on the people who claim the new system is great because they missed so many daily deals before because they were away. I just want to say that argument amounts too "Wow I missed that deep sale I'm just glad nobody can have them now if I can't." While I can understand the pain of missing a deep discount it's no reason to justify the current situation that affects everybody because of your current situation. But that's just how I see it's nothing concrete or against anybody.
Edit: Although it was badly worded I admit the option -"something mumbojumbo" also includes "The sale looks fine, "It's ok with me",... etc. I had actually forgotten to add the option when I first created the poll sorry about that.
Again let it be known 'Something mumbojumbo" = "The sale looks fine".
