Without the flash and daily sales it looks like many of our worst fears have been realized. I log on and what do I find....most of the games I want are barely even discounted. Seriously a 10% discount on one of them??! Come on Valve! Steam sales are officially dead to me now.

Would also like to add a few thoughts I've been having on the subject for a while now. The daily/flash/community deals all ended because the refund policy would have created a huge refund mess. For some this was a good enough excuse to end the deals outright. But I've been thinking there were plenty of solutions that could have been implemented to keep those deals. For instance wouldn't it have been good enough to post alert notices under the games in your cart that are being considered for daily/community deals. Sure you'd lose the big element of surprise but if it's worth you'd at least still have the deals. The notice would state that buying the game anyway right now would void you of a refund or at least until after the daily/community deal had ended to stop refund influxes.

And on the people who claim the new system is great because they missed so many daily deals before because they were away. I just want to say that argument amounts too "Wow I missed that deep sale I'm just glad nobody can have them now if I can't." While I can understand the pain of missing a deep discount it's no reason to justify the current situation that affects everybody because of your current situation. But that's just how I see it's nothing concrete or against anybody.

Edit: Although it was badly worded I admit the option -"something mumbojumbo" also includes "The sale looks fine, "It's ok with me",... etc. I had actually forgotten to add the option when I first created the poll sorry about that.
Again let it be known 'Something mumbojumbo" = "The sale looks fine".

What do you think of the sales?

It's just as bad as was predicted. Say goodbye to most games going as low as 75% etc.
Some mumbojumbo about how the sales will still be the same but just run longer
Gaben has forsaken us.
Well off to (insert alternative store here) I go.

Looks like the wishlist and the discovery queue are working again.

Guess I'm lucky then, because pretty much every game that I wanted is on sale (even "Undertale" and I did not expect that). At least two have better prices that on last sale, so I'm happy.

+1. Two of games that I wanted to buy (at least two, don't remember price of others) have better discount that on last sale, so I could buy something extra for my friend. I'm happy with that sale. I guess I just don't need minigames or whatever else.

So I check my wishlist of 350 games and what do I see?Rows of 75+% discounts.
Needless to say,I firmly believe this hysteria was premature.

I don't see a single item on my wishlist at its lowest price.

I'll still buy Super Meat Boy just because I wanted it, but they won't be getting any more money from me this time around.

This is extremely disappointing. What were they thinking ?... it's not like I buy something in
those sales, because I want to buy a game. Browsing for unique opportunities, checking
out daily deals .. the thrill of finding something that's cheap right now, that wasn't cheap like
an hour before and won't be cheap anymore for while in another few hours, that's what makes
it fun.
Now what I'm going to do during the holidays? Valve doesn't seriously expect
me to buy something and then actually play it ... no, that can't be? That's madness.

I really wanted CS:GO at 75% off. Planned on buying a copy for me and my cousin.

With its popularity when at -50% don't expect CS:GO to be cheaper any time soon.

I remember valve saying they would never put CSGO at 75% ever again because of smurfs and hackers.

Welll, I absolutely suck at economics, but I think it makes sense that when someone has the kind of pseudo-monopoly that valve does on an industry they're not gonna have to make great sales.

The thing is though, they do great sales. Even if the prices are not to some peoples liking, compared to most places, these sales are great. I've never seen Sony or Microsoft come close something like this on any of their big sales. They usually discount one or two big games and the rest of the library is mediocre.

The lack of participation really hurts it. I liked checking back in and seeing special limited time deals and even some of the stupid nonsense over the years that at least got people involved and talking about the sale. Now Steam is just another storefront.

I think the %s off have largely started to suffer over the last 2 years, but I generally can always find something Im open to and this sale is no different as there are a few things I'm somewhat tempted by, but it just doesn't matter anymore. The sale is basically over right away since there's nothing to look forward to or anything special involved. It's no different than an Amazon or insert store name here sale now.

Not at all. Everyone is having sales now days so Steam need to do better if they want people's hard earned cash. There are also a lot more games out there. Good games so people have less to spend on each game and can afford to be more picky.

No, they don't. Check gaming sites, nobody really bothers to talk about other places, GOG might be lucky to get some "hey, those bastards at gog are ripping Great Gaben's Sale and think they can be cool too", Humble might get ricochet too.
But any other place, nearly nothing in mainstream.
You heard about Origin or Uplay having Xmas Sale?

It's not just GOG, Origin or UPlay. Look at how many site are selling steam keys. Bundlestars, GMG, Humble store. There are lots of options. Maybe not that many people are using them but there are enough to keep all of them in business. Bundlestars had Mordor much cheaper then Steam all through the last sale and now you can get it for $11 from GMG. The humble bundle this week is offering a Square-Enix deal what totally destroys the steam prices. You can get the whole bundle for almost the price of Tomb Raider GOTY edition. There are also lots of games that are now being bundled so that complicates things more. I have 651 games in my steam account. Most of those were from bundles. Guess what, I have 10 games on the front page of steam. Let me just add that I bought 5 games on the steam mid year sale. I found 3 of those on better deals less than 2 weeks after the sale finished.

I know what you mean. But mainstream? Steam, sometimes gog and humble. And that's it. Even PC Gamer doesn't bother to talk about Bundlestars sales, even through they do free-game-giveaways together from time to time.

Of course the numbers are quite different. Steam has something like 10 million concurrent users but if you look at Playfire (GMG), they have 1 million users. That's nothing to be scoffed at. My point still stands. Steam have to be more competitive. At the very least for the users on this type of website. Even if you ignore all of the other sites then there are a lot more games on Steam so the games are competing more with each other. Previously there might have been 10 games I was interested in, now it's 30 but I still have the same money to spend.

The steam sales have been bad for a while now. I can't count how many times I have bought something on the steam sale only to see it cheaper 2 weeks later on a site like GMG.

75% off is the biggest deal for most serious games now :o so instead of waiting for big sales, we should wait for publishers weekend deals and such, because its obvious nobody is going to put their AAA game for sale that lasts 14 days ... it was happening before because of daily / flash deals so its kinda understandable, but still... not cool at all

i guess ill just shop less on steam and more on other retailers and thats it (:

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Better reason for it is that Valve takes 30% from each sold copy, while other retailers have fairly less oppresive values.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

From what I've heard (some insider knowledge, but mostly just hearsay), 30% is the norm. Out of the major retailers, only Humble offers a larger cut to the developers.

well, because of steam refund system they cant offer flash and daily deal anymore, and a huge cut on a game for 7 days wont appeal to the publishers

so yeah,, sales wont be the same but they are still good

Maybe sales numbers are going down so Valve is going to be more conservative
