Without the flash and daily sales it looks like many of our worst fears have been realized. I log on and what do I find....most of the games I want are barely even discounted. Seriously a 10% discount on one of them??! Come on Valve! Steam sales are officially dead to me now.

Would also like to add a few thoughts I've been having on the subject for a while now. The daily/flash/community deals all ended because the refund policy would have created a huge refund mess. For some this was a good enough excuse to end the deals outright. But I've been thinking there were plenty of solutions that could have been implemented to keep those deals. For instance wouldn't it have been good enough to post alert notices under the games in your cart that are being considered for daily/community deals. Sure you'd lose the big element of surprise but if it's worth you'd at least still have the deals. The notice would state that buying the game anyway right now would void you of a refund or at least until after the daily/community deal had ended to stop refund influxes.

And on the people who claim the new system is great because they missed so many daily deals before because they were away. I just want to say that argument amounts too "Wow I missed that deep sale I'm just glad nobody can have them now if I can't." While I can understand the pain of missing a deep discount it's no reason to justify the current situation that affects everybody because of your current situation. But that's just how I see it's nothing concrete or against anybody.

Edit: Although it was badly worded I admit the option -"something mumbojumbo" also includes "The sale looks fine, "It's ok with me",... etc. I had actually forgotten to add the option when I first created the poll sorry about that.
Again let it be known 'Something mumbojumbo" = "The sale looks fine".

What do you think of the sales?

View Results
It's just as bad as was predicted. Say goodbye to most games going as low as 75% etc.
Some mumbojumbo about how the sales will still be the same but just run longer
Gaben has forsaken us.
Well off to (insert alternative store here) I go.

So now i don't have to waste 2 weeksa of my life for the chance a flash sale may have a better discount. Yeah, it ius terrible, so much more time to actually play games. If you don't like the discounts given by the developers, not valve, go to another official store.

Well my policy of buying 80%+ games and concider others for how much i want the game is still up so no complains from me

i have to guess that games will go as low as before but for more time, thats the better part of the sale

also we need a good christmas event valve... jeez i was poor when the coal one was up bring it up

that's the way sales will work from now on because of refunds.. With flash and daily deals you'd have hundreds of thousands of refund request anytime a game hit the flash or daily deal.

Thusly steam just did away with those two sales to avoid all the extra refund emails from people with zero impulse control..

BTW buy early in these things as prices do tend to increase as time goes on.. during the last sale for Thanksgiving the last five days of the sale I noticed games I wanted slowly increasing in price..

The introduction of refunds killed flash sales.

A small price to pay too, imo.

I was personally just waiting for someone else to bring this up since it is all up to coincidence, but it looks pretty solid to me. Largest in my opinion is the level 2 foil badge. https://www.reddit.com/r/Steam/comments/3xvwus/steam_winter_sale_2015_lets_find_the_real_deal/

Another year, another downgrade.

I miss earning achievements in games which could be redeemed for game/in-game goodies.

Now the most I look forward to in sales are the free cards that I can sell off on the market.

I want an advice... I'm leveling up here and I have two options:

a) sell all expensive cards from this sale to make some new badges.
b) make badges of these sale cards.

obs.: I REALLY don't care what badge I get, since they all give me the same XP...

Well I say make badges with the holiday cards since they're ultra cheap and won't be around anymore after the sale.

they are very expensive here... with one sale set I can get two sets of normal games. maybe three if I use farmed cards.

Well you get 3 free holiday cards a day. You could either sell them or just craft them near the end of the sale.

discounts look decent enough to me. The "fun activity" being clicking through your discovery queue repeatedly is beyond uninspired and lazy though.

What better way to get you to buy more stuff than to get you to stare at ads on their site for 10 minutes.

Comment has been collapsed.

I dunno, maybe get me to stare at ads for games I'm potentially interested in, instead of a seemingly endless stream of early-access zombie survival sandbox games that all look the same ?
(And you know, accounting for the fact that I flag most of those as "not interested" ?)

Well, wait. That would be more useful, but not necessarily more fun.

Last year, for the first time ever, I Christmas shopped more at the Humble Store than Steam. This year, I will...probably do the same.

B..b..but we have a great new excitement daily: "Northpole Noir".....
At least no more stupid clicker games that fucked up the (poor) servers during sales. But I have to admit no community deal, no flash sales is kind of a let down, the good thing is that it limit the collateral damages these could do to our wallets.
Just a look at my wishlist, most of them have shitty discount so i'm not buying. Buy the games I'm interested in with good enough discount on the first day and that's the end of it.

The discounts are dependent on the actual game companies to agree on, not Steam. Here's how it goes.

Steam: Hey want to discount your game up to 90% off?
Game Company: Our game just came out, don't think we should do a big discount, how about 10% instead?
Steam: OK BUDDY.

I still have 80€ because I dont think that I should buy a game. At the moment I can save it and look what games will be bundled next 14 days - so maybe at the end I will get some stuff from the store...

Yes, it is dissapointing, but it is still hard to complain. Sice most of the games are too cheap, when you consider price/fun ratio... Just don't buy brand new releases if you are really not hyped about the game..

I'd still say, most of the fun with those sales comes from finding unique opportunities, so it's a huge turnoff when there's nothing to explore until Jan 4th.

Hello there my friend and marry Christmas to you :) Yeah, the thrill of the sale is gone and it's a bit dull. But when I think about it, i was often slightly annoyed if I missed some deal of the game i really wanted.. BTW: Great taste for games and sweet deal there on indie gala.. Might check that one out too.. :)

On a sidenote: indiegala has a pretty decent winter sale. For everything you buy, you get a secret xmas-gift game on top.
I just bought Pillars of Eternity for slightly less than the Steam sales price (the diffrence is probably a $/Euro conversion thing, because the
discount -60% is the same in both stores) and got Sniper Elite 3 on top! Now, that's a pretty good deal, I think.
Also ... indiegala allows you to pay with bitcoins ;-)

That really is a great deal. Must be for certain games right? Because that would be beyond generous to offer a deal that good with every game you buy.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

But that's exactly the case, with every order you get one extra game, believe it or not. Probably not al the extra games are as good/expensive as Sniper Elite 3, probably a lot of stuff that's been bundled like a zillion times before, but they promise that you get something with every order.

Hmm perhaps you bought all three games in one order? Each order, each time you check out your shopping cart
you should one extra game, you can check that in your cart as well. If you created three seperate orders and only
got one surprise game, I recommend asking support.

Hrmm so you didn' just miss out your second scratch card, you also didn't get the games you bought? That's not nice. Maybe they just have some technical issues. To be honest ,,, after I bought Pillars of Eternity, I got an error and was kicked out of my profile by their anti-DDos service (cloudflare) for some weird reason. I reset my IP, and everything worked fine. Maybe they're just under heavy load, with all that x-mas shopping. I hope support will fix your problem. Let me know when they do and what you got on second scratch card ;-)

Since I probably won't have the time to play it myself anyway, I thought I'd show some holiday spirit and create
a giveaway here. :-) Whitelisted you., just in case you're interested.

Well now that I have two weeks to talk myself out of buying something, I'm $13 in and already probably done. Unless Ubisoft's sorta-daily-deals are good I'll get few gifts for others, too, but likely not anything else for myself. Haven't spent less than $100 on a major sale ever since Holidays 2012. :-P Now I eagerly await each day to.. run autoclicker to farm cards, what joy.

We had this shit during the Summer Sale too. And just like the summer sale, this sale is actually fantastic. There is a huge amount of historic low prices. But who am I to get in the way of idiots blaming Steam for developers setting their own discounts.

It's pretty good deal-wise. Just ... if only my discovery queue wouldn't solely consists of recent AAA games ( I know them, too expensive /won't run), free to play games, already owned things (happened!) or Steam hardware... but at least quite fast and easy way to get the cards.

Be glad you get AAA games, I get boob-novels, and lots of them (that is VNs that mainly seem to be about boobs). Every time I get one I click "not interested", yet they keep showing up.
