Wireless 360 controllers need a special receiver. The USB cable that it uses only carries a charge, not data.

That's what I thought. Now how would one proceed to find that on Amazon (preferably Amazon France/Germany/Belgium/that part).
Thanks though.

Not sure where you can get it from in those parts. You can always check eBay.

DereckShiller, are you trying to use the Plug and Play cable, which is used for charging only, or do you have an actual Wired 360 Controller. This is a different product than the Wireless controller, which requires a receiver to use with your PC.

It is the wireless version, which came with a charging pack that required batteries. I got myself another pack which had its own battery and therefore is in plug'n'play (the cord came with obviously ^^)

which is a plus. no delay, no interference, no need to plug in the charger in the middle of the game, etc.

This is one of the many reasons why Wired Xbox 360 are superior in every way. I may add that wired peripherals are Always better too...
Oh, and on the topic of 360 controllers on Windows, little known fact: You can use peripherals attached to your 360 controller on Windows. I've used the mic for this several times as my old comp one died on me and I never got a new one. Haven't tried the keyboard attachment as I don't own it, but that would be kind of funny to see.

Just do it like me, go to a chinese store, buy a controller for like 1/6 the price of an original xbox controller, plug it in, install drivers, start game, play.
It's something i rarelly use, so no need to go over alot of trouble on how to get your 360 controller working on your pc when you can spend some money and buy one that will likely work after u are done installing the drivers.
Not-related to your issue: i bought a controller to play super meat boy, and man oh man i'm amazed on how easy the game turned out to be when i did this. Keyboard was so damn hard and annoying to use. There are some other games i still have to try it out.

Okay guys, thanks to everyone, I'm gonna grab the wireless adapter for 16 euros (the wired controller is 45 euros Oo (and I've already got an official controller dang it)). Will keep you posted, I guess, in case someone else runs into this trouble.

Eh, if u are buying the adapter and rarelly use it, it'll be a waste of money imo.
Honestly, the price is the main reason why i bought something really cheap, even though i know it will easily break or stop working after a year or two, but by then i probably won't need one anymore or buy a new one and still save money... xD

I bought the receiver for a wireless 360 controller a while ago. Before, I was using a PS3 controller using MotionJoy, but either the software became unstable lately or the USB cable is doing bad. It's constantly disconnecting, but it's worked fine for a long time. With so many games that natively support the 360 controller, I don't see how more people don't use it all the time. Games like Bastion feel so natural with a gamepad.

Can agree with this, Plugged mine in - Bam, works on everything.
There's plenty of guides out there if you've fucked up, use google.

Why would you need the adapter if the PC detected and installed drivers for the controller? I have a controller and when I first tried to use it, I thought it was broken/faulty. Plugged it in, windows installed drivers, started up a game, controller didnt work. Skip past all the uninstalling, reinstalling, installing of other aps and so forth I found out that I had to calibrate the controller. Control panel -> devices and printers -> left click your controller -> calibrate. Worked for me, though it wasnt an M$ controller...

It's not originally meant for computers, and you know how Microsoft and their faulty hardware are.

Hi everyone,
I have several games that would be best played with a controller (such as Hoard), and I thought I should try it once in my lifetime... and so I've decided to take one of my wireless xbox 360 controller and use it on my PC. So far, I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium Edition, 64 bits. The controller even though wireless is still connected by a usb cable (I'm charging the pack while it's plugged in; it's not the vanilla battery-eater pack). This controller, by the way, is the official one.
First I simply plugged it in. As usual Windows 7 found a driver and installed it. I tried using it on Hoard... nothing.
It was already infuriating. More and more games ask for a controller for an enjoyable experience and because of some Microsoft bs I can't play those games. I still set out to find out the drivers, and I did, but they were only for Windows XP (7 gets you everything you need through Windows Update).
I finally found a software that does... I'm not even sure what it does. Here's the clicky.
I've read their quick installation .pdf guide, and I've tried the steps - remove the cable, put it back in, aaaaand I don't have a receiver. It's straight from the controller to the computer, but I've heard this could work.
At this very moment, the light on my cable (that shows battery status) went from red to green after a few seconds of being connected, and the 4 LEDs on the controller are flashing. They've been like that for 20 minutes.
Question then; has anybody been able to use their wireless Xbox 360 controller with Windows 7 and if so, how did you do it? I figure Steamgifts users will know a bit more about this without asking me to take my PC apart (not that I don't know anything about computers, it's just that I'm tired of tech forums always asking for your complete configuration when you're just trying to install a driver).
Any help is appreciated.
EDIT: I've bought a wireless adapter which is in fact mandatory for 16 euros (the wired controller is 45). Several people seem to prefer the wired controller so I'll keep you guys posted about how this adapter goes. Note that both the controller and adapter are offial straight from Microsoft.
