Hey guys,

Hopefully this doesn’t turn into a hostile discussion. The objective is just to raise awareness. Please keep the negativity to yourself.
If we all change a little, the world would be so much better.

Unfortunately not everybody thinks about what goes on with the environment behind the scenes. Our behaviours, including the choices we make can be disruptive or worse destructive to something else (it/they). I believe most don’t think or understand the consequences that their decisions or purchases in life has on the planet and other species.

While growing up I made the same choices as everybody else, regardless of what they implied. Part of it was culture, or family traditions, which does make your opinions very narrow.
I’ve always been a person that identified with nature, although I was never much of an outdoor person. Even then I thought I was doing enough. Sadly it couldn’t be further from the truth.

You’ve probably heard recently on how the Amazonian forest is on fire. This is critical. I am frustrated because, the news only went public after 3 weeks of it happening and still going. Covering it, or in fact ignoring it is not the solution. You’ve got to understand that what is destroyed won’t grow back. Entire species of plants and animals are at risk. This one is tied to deforestation due to all the meat consumption around the world. Absurd amounts of animals are killed everyday to support our addictions. To grow more and more. To put into perspective, If your pet, dog or cat would be treated or killed like many animals do every single day, you would be happy with that? It is ok to kill cows or pigs, but not your property right? Finding mothers losing their sons every day is such a sad thought.

This is not the only issue by all means. A grave issue has been happening with the coral reefs. We lost 40% of it already, FOREVER! For those of you who don't know, these are critical for all ocean life. Ultimately if affects us too, of course.
At least with this problem now, it could be an opportunity to once again bring awareness to everyone.

Unfortunately a big culprit is the greediness of these companies that think having more profit is more important than the environment. Since when did we come to that? Are they telling me that money (which is a virtual thing), is more important than survival? Why would money matter if we are all sick or dead?
Remember, the power is within the people, not the business, neither the politicians!

Loving animals, also means being more responsible, to what makes them happy and grow. It is their environment too. They must not feel, that we are intruders. Nature is precious to all!
We need nature as much as every other specie in this planet. Those that appreciate forests, or the ocean, then this will resonate very quickly.
Nature gives, without asking anything in return. Sure, we all use resources from earth, but we must respect it!
Furthermore, entire species are in constant danger of being extinct all the time. 99% of the currently threatened species are at risk due to human activities, unlike unpredicted past events, that caused mass extinctions. The impact is unknown, but certainly devastating. Each animal plays a role in the ecosystem and consequently the food chain (which we are a part of).

More than 3 years ago I’ve made a pretty big change in my life. It started with my diet. Reducing all the meat and fish... and eventually becoming vegan. Everything else made much more sense. My health is better than ever, my mind is clear. I feel better knowing that I am doing something good at least. Eventually I started reducing my footprint. Reducing waste as much as possible. My lifestyle changed a lot, along with my decisions. It is a fun and long journey, and not a difficult one if you are willing to give up some of your time to implement it.
A whole-food plant based diet is a dramatic improvement to my health, as well as the environment. Considering all the facts, specially meat consumption being one of the most devastating to the environment, I am happy I've made the change. Just wish I had made it long ago.

We should all ask yourselves... is this the best we can do? just let corruption govern? thriving at the expense of others? when will it end? why do we allow the greedy companies to command what is the best for us? do you want to live in a world where everything is degrading... animals and nature dying, pollution is the norm, diseases are the norm, lack of biodiversity, medicine stagnated, etc? eventually we will be dead too. No matter what, we cannot survive without it!

This is a call for your HELP... to protect the planet we all live on!
I suggest you mark on your calendar (at least once a month) something from the list below that you are going to change towards this goal. Even the smallest thing counts.

Things to get you started (in no specific order):

  • Reduce dairy. Start with plant based mylk. It is estimated that 75% of the world population is lactose intolerant.
  • Stop buying real leather. There are plenty of alternatives, including many fake materials that look real.
  • Reduce meat/fish consumption on a frequent basis. Start with once a week. Our tastes are doomed, however you will slowly appreciate other flavours from earthly foods.
  • Reduce plastic waste. One consequence is microplastics:
    • Bags - buy a reusable one and carry it with you, always!
    • Straws. This is a devastating problem to water species. Purchase glass, metal or bamboo straws, and always carry them with you.
    • Bottles of water - I recommend buying a reusable bottle of water to carry with you at all times.
    • Purchase or make bigger quantities of shampoo/shower gel, or even better, change to soap.
  • Switch to an electricity provider that uses 100% renewable energy for your home. The emissions from fossil fuel-based electricity generation account for a significant portion of world greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Similarly, don't buy cosmetics that contain microbeads. They have been banned in many countries, but check first.
  • Treat nature with respect. Don’t throw garbage to the floor, unless it is decomposable.
    • Separate your batteries and electronics from your other trash.
  • Don’t buy from companies that test on animals or exploit the environment!
  • Strive to buy and use earth friendly materials like metals (steel, aluminium), glass, cotton/natural fibres, wood, natural oils, paper, carton, etc. Bonus points for compostable. See the difference. Avoid too much plastic.
  • Be conscious of your purchases big or small. Enquiry on what is made of. Avoid materials or chemicals that damage the environment. Be curious!
  • Do not flush any materials down the toilet that can be dangerous to marine life.
  • When eating out, make sure you put your left overs on the appropriate garbage cans. This will ease the recycle process. In some situations, it makes sense to ask the restaurant to put it on a container and bring it home.
  • Make use of public transports, specially trains or trams, but if you drive, switch to an electric car.
  • Avoid anything that use unsustainable palm oil. Here's a list of companies and their respective score.
  • Tentatively buy used, or at least more durable goods.
  • Try to use your possessions for longer to reduce consumerism. There are plenty of ideas for repurpose. This is called upcycling. Otherwise read bellow.
  • Sell or even better give your goods to someone else, so they can make use of it. Don’t throw it away! You can also exchange it, when buying a new product (some companies do this).
  • Buy organic if you can (but don't obsess over it). However make sure you look out for companies that belong to associations that treat this subject seriously. Not all organic farmers follow the best practices.
  • Reduce the use of virgin paper when you can. Print less, specially if it is only temporary. Try to only buy physical books for the ones you really like and want to keep, leaving the rest for digital. Physical magazines are a waste.
    • You can also be creative with used paper
  • Support local or smaller businesses that are doing the right thing.
  • Volunteer or donate to charities that support the cause
  • Vote for politicians that value and care for the environment (ex, green party 😅)
  • Go outside, explore the world. Nature is beautiful! 🌲
  • Treat animals with respect. Give them love! They need your help! 🦊
  • Spread awareness! 🙏🏽

It's easy to ignore what goes around in the world. I know, but please be mindful. For every action we do, for each purchase we make, we may be severely affecting others and ultimately ourselves. We should be striving to live in harmony, without damaging the most beautiful thing we’ve got... planet earth!
It is all about reducing our footprint, so other species and nature can thrive too. They have the same right to live in peace as we do. We all need each other!
Habits take time to form, but as with anything, the rewards are worth fighting for! Remember every little change is important. With time, changes stick and new habits are created. Eventually it will all fall into place. The healthier the environment, the healthier you will be. Let’s please stop acting like we are not responsible for the planet. Destruction won’t go away, unless we do something about it now.
Do it for the animals, for other species, but specially for your children aka the next generation. We do it together!

You have my gratitude for reading so far. If you have been doing this for a while, my gratitude expands even further :)
Remember, the next generations won't forget us (for better or for worse)!
Greta Thunberg has a message for you!

Also don’t forget to treat all human beings with respect. Help them overcome their issues, even strangers. The happier everyone is, the better we become. Nobody deserves less!

If you need help with this or any other issue, feel free to add me on steam.

Feel free to suggest new ideas, or report dead links. I aim to keep this up to date.
Thanks for reading!

I agree with most of of your points, just some comments ;)

Reduce diary. Start with plant based milk. Soy, Oat, Almond, Coconut, there are plenty of choices. I love these, can’t have anything else now.

Don´t like the taste of it (esp. coconut... bah!), but I don´t drink much milk anyway (well, but I like cheese...)

Reduce plastic waste. Start with using less plastic bags (buy a reusable one and carry it with you, always!), less bottles of water, bigger quantities of shampoo/shower gel (or even better, change to soap). I recommend buying a reusable bottle of war to carry with you.

I don´t use plastic bags at all (ok, sometimes the thin ones for vegetables, which I use as trash bag afterwards), and I´m not carrying a reusable one with me. I take the big cartons (i.e. the ones with 12 milk packs in them) in the shop that are empty and put stuff in there ;)
Water in glass bottles, or just from the tap.
btw, "bottle of war"? ;)

Treat nature with respect. Don’t throw garbage to the floor, unless it is decomposable.

I only throw non-decomposable garbage on the floor... (inside my house ;)) jk

Make more use of public transports, or if you drive to switching to an electric car.

Would like to (public transport), but not possible where I live. Electric car maybe when my old one is broken, if one with good battery range is affordable...

Don’t buy from companies that test on animals or exploit the environment!
Good point, but needs a lot of research, and not possible in some cases (fuel)

Stop using straws. This is a devastating problem to water species. Buy yourself metal or glass straws and always carry it with you.

I don´t use straws, but if I would I still wouldn´t get a glass/metal straw... too annoying.

When eating out, make sure you put your left overs on the appropriate garbage cans. This will ease the recycle process.

If you´re talking about food: Or take it with you and eat it later at home... microwave ftw ;)
If you´re talking about the trash/ packaging: Let the employees do it (where appropriate), this saves jobs ;)

Sell or even better give your goods to someone else, so they can make use of it. Don’t throw it away! You can also exchange it, when buying a new product.

only stuff that doesn´t sell in ebay and no one wants goes to trash ;)

That was funny! 😄

Good idea with the big cartoons. And bottle of water is such an easy fix. Way to go.

btw, "bottle of war"? ;)

Fixed. What a disaster that would be haha. Interesting you were the only one to spot it until now.

I only throw non-decomposable garbage on the floor... (inside my house ;)) jk

Perhaps I should define the meaning of floor 😛

only stuff that doesn´t sell in ebay and no one wants goes to trash 😉

Yeah. Fair enough.

Its a nice thought, but I just dont see an endgame to all of this. With overpopulation and with so many living in poverty or on a brink of it..

I try to be environmentally conscious. But with one person doing this stuff, there are thousands of those who dont do it, and the number of them just increases. Recyclable bags ? Even with paper bags being in the same price, same weight capacity and being more practical, no one chooses them. I do. Maybe 3 or 4 people out of a hundred do. But over the years the use of them has died down and everyone still gets plastic bags..
Cars ? Everyone cuts out filters that reduce emissions because its cheaper that way. They dont care they are breathing in cancer inducing gasses. It was cheaper after all. You try to reason with them ? BuT iT wAs ChEaPeR.

All Im trying to say - majority wont put environment above self preservation on their priorities list. The rich and the poor have to change their mindset for us to actually achieve something. For us - middle class - this is just self-jerking party where we pat each other on the back and try to feel better about ourselves.

Kudos to you for changing yourself, and for spreading awareness. I try to reduce my footprint as well. I try to convince others around me to be more conscious. But with all that - I just dont see how we are getting out of this shit show we call humanity.

The shit show is an analogy for The Truman Show, except there is no end to it.
I used to think that way, but change has to start somewhere. History tells us that one man can change everything! I see some differences in population behaviour already since 3 years ago. Additionally we see celebrities and athletes themselves change and spread the message. Many actually do a lot behind the scenes. People follow them, copy their lifestyle, and sometimes they also change. That is why awareness is so powerful.

In the UK the super markets finally stopped delivering plastic bags with the groceries (it used to be optional for quite a long time). And in the shops only sell reusable ones.

Even for very traditional families, would they want their kids to breath cancer gasses from cars like you said? probably not. Stubbornness may costs their lives.

You see, the issue with overpopulation and deprecation of earth's resources is the endgame. It's closer than you think. Time is running out ;/

Even for very traditional families, would they want their kids to breath cancer gasses from cars like you said? probably not. Stubbornness may costs their lives.

Thing about this is though - arrogance. At least in my country. Glad to hear people actually arent arrogant asses in other countries.
But here they dont care simply due to the fact they think they know better. Regarding emissions of cars - In the mind of these idiots its all a scam from car manufacturers to make us pay for "useless" technology.. You say it causes cancer and you and yours kids are breathing it in, they say its bullshit due to some idiotic reason they read on facebook or the neighborhood mechanic without education told them. Thats a flat out arrogance regarding stuff like this. And it goes the same for emissions, for disposing of tires (because who cares about government scam of recycling tires), for disposing technical liquids (oil, coolant etc). Those are just poured out on a sidewalk or behind a bush, because obviously its a scam by companies to cash in for correctly disposing of oils and other liquids.

All the arrogance and egoism usually could be seen in middle aged people (or boomers if I may) who have lived under Soviet regime. But the thing is, millenials are being thought by these boomers and I can see a lot of these negative traits being passed on to 20ish old people. The arrogance and total disregard for others or environment.

That is one of the reasons I dont see a way out of this.. They are all decent people and friends of mine. But there is just no changing their mind when they simply think everything is a conspiracy and lies.

Totally agree with you there. It is also my experience that boomers are more closed minded than the younger generations.

Most of the information passed through previous generations started in propaganda by big corporations. At a time without internet, accessing the real information was difficult, if not impossible for some. With the lack of interest and culture religion, the miss-information was easily spread. Like you said, without any fact checking what so ever. Which was the objective from the beginning. After a certain point, the knowledge gained becomes sacred, and anybody who challenges it is crazy! I see this happen all the time, even after science proved otherwise.
Those ideas are stuck in the Matrix from the architects. It takes huge amount of work from everybody to access the source-code and decipher what is going on.

For centuries, most of those who challenged the status quo were easily silenced. As long as it doesn't benefit those in power, you were effectively screwed. At least, since the inception of the internet the story is changing.

The trend so far, is the younger generations are becoming more aware of this fact. I think this is most likely because the internet doesn't allow them to develop a strong attachment to their roots, while ignoring other parts of the world. Which is now very reachable. In that sense, survival has become critical and many of the informed are raising their voices.
Generation Z is doing better than the last, and the next will do even better. Asking the right questions, being curious and thinking why things are working this way.

The more I research and experiment, the more I believe in alternative medicine. Prevention and taking care of oneself is the better remedy. I rarely use any drugs, and when I do, it is the fool proof ones that have been tested centuries ago. The animals that died to paracetamol are not being killed anymore.

Besides, if you have a chance to save many, you would rather stay put. Convenience is the enemy of gratitude. Here's some food for though: you know every time you are having a shit... don’t flush the toilet! Leave it be... let it overflow! Because that's exactly what you are doing now. Not giving a sh*t. Except the reality of the feces at the moment, represents carnage.

Fortunately not everybody thinks like you.

If something is working and healing people it is called medicine.

If something is not working but is easy to use to make $ from people it is called alternative medicine.
Alternative medicine describes any practice that aims to achieve the healing effects of medicine, but which lacks biological plausibility and is untested, untestable or proven ineffective.

The state was simply what I personally practice before you started raging. Which is far fetched from the op’s main point.

A lot of parts in the world do not use western medicine. Your view of the world is not the reality I am afraid.

It is curious that of all the examples you mentioned £ as the reason for alternative medicine, when in fact is quite the opposite. £325b market in US is barely a poor man’s story, not counting the rest of the world.

Even more curious is yourself not knowing where traditional medicine started and is still based off. Traditional studies performed by researchers (which leads to a medicine being created), are based on wildlife, either in the form of directly using the plants and/or by studying them, as well as the animals that live in it.

Thus what is synthetic, has been studied in nature before. Earth’s resources are used perpetually to make traditional medicines. Nothing is created in vacuum. By studying physics you can learn to appreciate this fact. The three rules of motion:

  • First Rule: An object will remain at rest or in a uniform state of motion unless that state is changed by an external force.
  • Second Rule: Force is equal to the change in momentum (mass times velocity) over time. In other words, the rate of change is directly proportional to the amount of force applied.
  • Third Rule: For every action in nature there is an equal and opposite reaction.

Big pharma's objective is to keep you on their agenda as long as possible. It is a corruptive market, in what could be an otherwise benefit for humanity. If you believe the current era of drugs are made to cure people, than you are the monkey. They are giving it to you like a candy. And for that I am sorry. Take it as it is and get out of the loop. There are many lessons to be learned.
Other forms of medicines won’t have recognition not because of science, but because it is accessible. In reality, many cultures use their knowledge developed over centuries effectively as their medicine, and couldn’t care less if they are recognised or not.

Disagreeing with someone is different than being indifferent to ones opinion, but it does not alter the reality in any way, shape or form.

I did not rage. I just pointed out that alternative medicine is stupid and does not work and is used to earn easy $.

"A lot of parts in the world do not use western medicine."

I know that there are many parts of the world that does not have easy access to modern medicine and the data shows how much they need the modern medicine so we are sending them modern vaccines and drugs (look Africa).

"Your view of the world is not the reality I am afraid."

Stupid and not needed as you created what you think that I think about the world in your own head only to show that what you made up in your head is wrong.

"Even more curious is yourself not knowing where traditional medicine started and is still based off."

^ same as above. It is stupid and pointless to tell others what they think and don't know based on 3 sentences. Don't create others opinions and knowladge in your mind only to show that what you created is stupid and false.

And yes $ is why we create alternative medicine as you can sell powder made from beetroot for 100$.

"Traditional studies performed by researchers (which leads to a medicine being created), are based on wildlife, either in the form of directly using the plants and/or by studying them, as well as the animals that live in it.

Thus what is synthetic, has been studied in nature before. Earth’s resources are used perpetually to make traditional medicines."

True. Last 150 years of science created modern medicine. But what you want to say here is that instead of using a perfected form of a drug that helps because the dose is just right you will prefer to chew a plant?

"The three rules of motion" + "Big pharma's bla bla" is what all the anti vaxxers says.

"Disagreeing with someone is different than being indifferent to ones opinion, but it does not alter the reality in any way, shape or form."

True.

Medicine works.
Education works.
Science works.
Alternative medicine does not.

Nice ideas, but still just a drop in the ocean no matter how many first worlders adopt them, completely or partially. People in poor, developing and/or war torn countries who don't know where their next meal is coming from and maybe not even their next drink of clean water simply can't afford to. While the modern industrial revolution has been with us since the late 19th century, it's only since the huge post WW2 population spike that this problem has gone critical as "greedy corporations" supply an ever increasing demand not just for goods, services and energy, but also for the jobs necessary to be able to buy those things and survive. Difficult to convince the poor Brazilian farmer to stop burning rain forest so he can pasture cattle or grow soy in order to feed his family. I'm not a fan of capitalism either - but it's what we've got at present, unless your prepared to overthrow your government and takeover the means of production (no guarantees there either, considering China's or the former USSR's track record with the environment). So that means the only way to reduce consumption effectively is to reduce demand, and that won't happen either unless Thanos steps in or Bill Gates prophecies of pandemic come true.

Our survival isn't entirely without hope though. I firmly believe that human inventiveness and ingenuity (which often does kick in at the 11th hour - and at a profit) is our best chance at this late date. Recently, scientists at Rice U figured out how to recycle greenhouse gas and then there's this enterprising kid who launched his plan to clean up the great pacific garbage patch.

FWIW, I try to do my bit anyway. I don't drive a car, repurpose everything I can't recycle at the local dump, keep a organic garden that is home to many beneficial birds and insects during summer (including wild honey bees). I won't give up meat or dairy, though I try to limit consumption to free range and humanely raised as much as my limited budget allows. I firmly believe that consuming dairy from grassfed cows is more environmentally friendly than soy or almond products, which can impact rain forests, deplete precious water resources and spread pesticides that kill bees. I don't eat fast foods (well rarely and I usually regret it) and avoid packaged and processed foods. These are all lifestyle choices of course, but seem to coincide with environmental concerns as well.

There is plenty of interesting great stories like that. This is the last one I remember
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tkjzq9z0TCo (and the guy is legit)

The people in poor countries have been greatly affected by overpopulation, along with the rising of industrialisation over centuries. They are connect in more ways than you think. It's the way we are dealing with it. Sadly the biggest cause is animal agriculture.

https://freefromharm.org/agriculture-environment/saving-the-world-with-livestock-the-allan-savory-approach-examined/

Interesting that 82% of starving children live in countries where food is fed to animals, and the animals are eaten by western countries.
http://comfortablyunaware.com/blog/the-world-hunger-food-choice-connection-a-summary/

Every single one of us have the power to make a change. Some more than others. Thanks for doing your bit. You are already doing more than many. Kudos :)
Also glad to hear you provide a comfort spot for the bees. They are critical to nature.

While I respect your decision to keep meat/fish consumption, I disagree with it. Unfortunately there is no sustainability with the current model as stated above. You might not think there is more to do, but sometimes all we lack is the right information.
I hope it doesn’t come to that, but sooner than later we will be shifting to eating insects. That is if the rich humans don’t find refugee in Mars and let us all alone to die here.

If you can please add this (https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/from-fish-to-humans-a-microplastic-invasion-may-be-taking-a-toll/) to microplastics as it have some shock value. It is important for people to understand that we are eating microplastics now in our food.

Thanks for your post. I'm not able to give up on meat and fish but I only eat them twice a week.
I'm very proud of what my town has done in the past 10 years in terms of waste reduction...
Also, last year I gifted everyone trees using treedom, instead of buying useless random stuff for christmas.

Great progress. Makes me happy hearing this :)

Never heard of treedom. Looks super cool. I guess I'll do that this Christmas!
