I'm not sure if these count as underrated, but they're definitely overlooked.
Guns of Icarus Online
Screencheat
Both are really fun multiplayer games with unique concepts, they just need slightly larger fanbases. :/

Dark Horizons Mechinized Corps,
I love to jump on and play around with building mechs and playing the SP missions. Still early access which might be why it's fairly unknown. I used to play Dark Horizons Lore many many years ago and have given away a few copies of the game here too.

Dreaming Sarah is the best indie game that I've never seen anyone else playing. It tells its story very well and manages to keep the gameplay engaging. A ton of my friends own it from some bundle or another, but none of them have actually finished it, just idled it for cards. That's a shame, because you can probably finish the game before all the cards drop. If a short, story-driven platformer sounds like something you'd enjoy, I highly recommend it. Check it out - you might even already have it from some bundle and not realize it.

EDIT: The stealth giveaway is over. Thank you to the five people who actually had some interest in this game and clicked on the link to check it out, or whatever else you guys did to find it. There's a real store link here for people who happen to be reading this and just want to check out the store page. It really is a wonderful game, and I meant everything I said about it.

I don't know, the game world is small enough that it's usually pretty obvious where to go next. And as long as you keep your eyes open the first time through each area, you won't miss much. I had one place where I got pretty stuck, but making a few mistakes is just part of playing a game. It wouldn't be the same experience with a big flashing arrow telling you where to go all the time.

As for length, I don't feel like every game needs to be long. The original Super Mario Bros. can be beaten in under ten minutes. The question I would ask instead is "does it feel satisfying when you're done?" And in this game's case, yeah, it does.

Chaos Legion

Definitely one of the most underrated games ever. People keep comparing it to DMC while it's not even trying (For crying out loud, both games are produced by the same developer and publisher). Good thing i played this first before DMC. A perfect example of why metacritic is not 100% reliable.

This is so underrated that i might even be flamed for posting this title. :P

Here's a Wiki link and a Gameplay link.

Caveat: gameplay link contains spoilers.

Liberation Day - a very old but very interesting strategy game with a good balance between base building and turn based fighting, a shame there was not a sequel

Seven Kingdoms - a very different kind of strategy game, actually has a sequel on steam

Lumino City -- a hand-made point & click game. one of the best of its kind
Mini Ninjas -- cute and relaxing adventure game
Super Time Force Ultra -- a unique platformer about time travel
Unholy Heights -- a simulation game about being a landlord. Your tenants are all monsters

^ These games are all seriously underrated in my opinion

May I bring your attention to Original War:

store.steampowered.com/app/235320/

Original strategy with RPG elements, grand storyline, challenging difficulty, fun multiplayer and hand drawn graphics that aged far better then all those "3D" game of that age..

If you want a less mainstream and more personal take on strategy games, I urge you to play it.. :)

XIII, the FPS for the original xbox/ps2 generation. It was amazing. I remember playing it on Christmas when I had the flu and was completely dosed on Dayquil cold medicine which made the game so much better with all the bright vibrant cel-shaded comic book style graphics :P

Sunless Sea: http://store.steampowered.com/app/304650/

I've heard it being compared to FTL, but I've never played that so I cannot compare the two. I've been playing it the last couple of weeks and can't put it down; that being said it caters to a particular temperament in that it's a quiet menace of a game. The premise is you are a sea captain in the utter zee based out of Fallen London (it was dragged underground by bats.) You travel from port to port in a fog of war with the islands being slightly different places per captain (some islands don't move.) It's VERY story driven in that you'll meet people that ask for favors/quests that you can do to get resources.
About resources, you have to manage your ships crew, fuel, food supply, and terror. If you run out of crew through not enough/dying, you die. If your terror reaches 100, you'll probably die. If you run out of fuel, you'll probably die. If you run out of food... well, someone will die..
The game is inspired by Lovecraft and maybe some Poe. It's got fantastic writing and the developers are currently working on a submarine dlc expansion. They also expect you to die. A lot. If you have purchased a house and written a will, you can pass on some items to your next captain. You need that, because, well, you will die.

It's a great game.

Oh yeah, it's also has a pretty mean RNG. You will die.

The game has lots of positive reviews, but they need more love :)
