I'm not familiar with that holiday so I looked it up online and read about it briefly. Happy Dussehra to you and your family.

I don't believe I've ever eaten any food from India before. There's an place a few streets away from me that makes Indian food that I was considering checking out. What would you suggest?

Butter chicken (tomato based gravy with low but not nil spices xD). If you're veg- butter paneer (cottage cheese), malai kofta (cottage cheese gravy) with basmati rice or naan bread ๐Ÿคค

I do eat veggies, but I love meat so butter chicken it is! I looked it up online and it looks really good. I've heard a lot about Naan bread, is cheese a normal option with it or is that something that was added by other cultures?

Cheese is definitely a non-native ingredient, but imo garlic cheese naan works well with the flavour profiles of the curries so why not xD I also suggest a nice lassi (sweet creamy drink of yoghurt) to accompany the meal ^^
