I formated my friend's phone

I was browsing through his phone and I found the format section. I asked him if I can format it. He said yes
(he wasn't sarcastic) then after doing it he went mad... The worst part is that it wasn't even his phone. Is there any way to recover the contacts and messages?

If you formatted the sim card there's very little you can do about it. If you formatted the sd card, there are some recovery softwares out there you could use to get it all back. Contacts might be synced to google if it's android.
