So today we are changing the invite-and-join process for private groups, and taking steps to address spam

Good change for once?

They fucked up big time. It's impossible to invite non-friends to your group.

That's a "fuck up" I'll gladly take if it means no more shitty CSGO spam invites.

tbh, I'll take it over that invite spam. In past few months, I've had an average of more than 1 scam group invite per day, sometimes 4-5 in one day.

To address this, you can now only be invited into a group by your friends. This still maintains the common uses of forming a closed group to hang out with your friends, or creating a restricted group for people of similar interests or achievements.

Freaking yes! That's awesome!

Public group – Users can join on their own or via an invite from a friend.
Restricted group – Users can join by requesting membership. They can also receive an invite from a user that has permission to add members.
Closed group – This is the most restricted group. Users can only join via invites by members who have permission to send invites. Users cannot request to join these groups.

Good stuff. Doesn't make recruitment too complicated if need be...

Cool. Hopefully, the CSGO groups don't add me anymore.

CSGO groups bots will invite friend now then invite to group if you accept so you will get "friend" spam now instead of "group" spam

Making account that invites costs $5. Making spam groups is free.

Each invited person taking friend list slot too, while groups don't have memberlist limit.

I stopped getting random group invites when I stopped joining random groups, but this is a nice change nonetheless.
Idk if it's just me, but it seems like Steam is rolling out changes a lot more quickly than in the past.

No, what is happening is that this is part of a plan that they've been working on for a long time, probably years, and they are just now making those changes live. None of this is ad hoc implementation.

Finally. I keep getting so many group invites each day for scamming/referral groups, so this change is welcome. :P

Sounds too good to be true, doesn't it?
I'm curious to see what could possibly go wrong... I mean, how will spammers try to work around this?

We'll get spam friend requests from group bots now instead :D

At least those can be easily identified - and blocked.
But if you weren't in any weird group to begin with, those bots won't be able to find you so easily.

After all, the secret to a spam-free Steam experience is to have a clean group list and friend list.

Yep, have under 30 friends and am in somewhere around 50 groups. Rarely get invites to anything :)

I've been getting bombarded by invites lately, this change solved it.

I can understand why it's bad for groups' owners, though. It's bad for growth.
