Well, my nephew has lived for the past 6 years on pretty much chicken nuggets and milk alone. And not very much of either too. He's 9.

My son isn't necessarily that limited, but he will not eat much. What's really cute/sad is that he refuses to eat meat. He has since he was old enough to tell me he didn't want to hurt animals (so like three... he's eight now). However, he will not do vegetables... fitting nicely with the OP... he gets most of his protein from peanut butter.

"No single vegetable or legume has all nine essential amino acids humans need to build the proteins that make up our muscles [...] At first, without all the right amino acids, your hair starts to lighten in color and your fingernails get soft. Much worse, 'your lean body mass suffers. That doesn't just mean your muscles, but also your heart and your organs.' Eventually, your heart shrinks so much you die; this happens, on occasion, with extreme cases of anorexia nervosa."

Thanks! That was a very interesting article, but it doesn't really answer the question. Okay, a lifetime supply of only one food will kill you, that sounds fairly reasonable, but, a year of it? Half a year? I guess a better question would be "How much can you survive eating only peanuts?".

This is actually a bit of a misconception. Almost all foods (vegetables and legumes included) include all nine essential amino acids, the problem is that most vegetables don't contain enough of it for them to be a good single source of the amino acids (you would have to eat too much of it). Buckwheat and quinoa are two really good sources, where you don't need to consume much to get all amonio acids needed (they are on par with many meat products, surpassing some). Of course the best thing is to combine different sources, but that's not really the question the OP asked.
If we're only talking about amino acids, peanuts is a pretty decent source. It's lacking a bit when it comes to lysine and phenylalanine+tyrosine, but with a high enough intake (with weight gain as a side effect), there would be enough of all amino acids.
There are other things needed than the amino acids though. Peanuts don't contain any vitamin A or B12 :(

If you don't care about the possibility of cancer and the results of an imbalanced diet, then do it, it's your life. xD

Ever heard of the big amount of mycotoxins that nuts usually have? ^_^
Comment has been collapsed.
Try searching for the amounts of mycotoxins that have been found from time to time on nuts - extremely over the legal limit. xD You are welcome. ;P

Not really, except if you're talking about an indirect cause of cancer.

Sort of a joke, sort of not. If I was to believe everything that the press has said causes cancer, I'd probably already be dead. Meat. Certain foods that aren't meat. Exercising. Sugar. Anger. Coffee. Sex. etc.
So yeah, in a way, everything I need to enjoy my life before I die, will give me cancer. lmao.

I think Mr. Bean has feasted on too many nuts in his lifetime!

What about your stomach? It constantly needs food. :/

Not really, bile production would be affected, and things like intestinal funciton would be drastically reduced, but ingesting water would keep things working at a minimal level. I wouldn't suggest it as a course of action, as I'm not entirely sure you would be able to ever resume a regular diet without problems. But in theory you should be able to survive.
People live on liquid diets already (think comatose patients on a picc line)

I'm not sure about peanuts, but I once read about a guy who ate basically nothing but cookies for 25 years and was still fine. Well, not "fine" since it obviously led to health issues, but he didn't die. So I'm inclined to think think that peanuts would be similar in that you can theoretically stay alive with an all-peanut diet, unless there's something fundamentally different about peanuts that makes them dangerous to consume in excess compared to cookies. Anyway, here's an article I found about it (ironically he is a chef):

If you you "found" a truckload of peanuts and think you won the lottery you're unfortunately mistaken.
What you could do is substituting a meal or so per day ... could save you money but probably get allergies
after weeks/months if you eat too much of those per day (esp. if salted) and as Shamrock said that could lead to
cancer as well, but would take years (with way above average peanut consumption) i'd be guessing in my ignorance.

You are going to have a bad time when you go to the toilet, been there done that.

Yes, but only to an extent. You won't be healthy and will eventually die from poor nutrition.

Once I ate almost an entire can of peanuts at once and for the next 24 hours I burped every couple minutes. Each one tasted like liquid death.

You could survive a reasonably long period of time off of peanuts only. How long depends on a few factors, you would have to drink a lot of water, and get a good amount of sun to make the diet last, and you would need a lot of peanuts. Making it into Peanut butter, you would need to eat around 21 tablespoons a day to meet the minimum "healthy" calorie intake. You would get more than enough protein, Vitamin E and B3, copper, and magnesium, but be very lacking in Vitamins A, B1, B2, C, D, and K, which can lead to bad eyesight, scurvy, rickets, lack of blood clotting (important for stopping bleeding), and even internal bleeding. Not to mention Calcium, Iron, and Potassium would be severely lacking, causing a slew of problems, especially to bone strength.
Let's say you used multivitamins, and got a lot of sun, you could become less deficient in those vitamins and minerals. However, You would still be getting less than a third of your carbohydrates, and almost 3 times the amount of fats per 2,000 calories. You'd have heart issues, be more susceptible to cancer, and not be in terribly good shape all around. You'd lower your life span considerably, but you could live a long time.
Tl;Dr,
You could plausibly survive a pretty long time off of just peanuts, even longer with proper sun, water, and multivitamins. But you would have many issues and take a great chunk out of your life expectancy.

Hey, you know your stuff, good answer!
I read about the "if you're only allowed to eat one thing" question in a newspaper some years ago, and they (I think it was a university study) came to the conclusion that potatoes was a pretty good option. Not perfect, you would get health issues, but not any major ones initially, and if I remember correctly they estimated that you could live on potatoes for about half a year without any major health issues, and continue living several years after that, but with declining health. There might even have been some real life examples of people surviving on only potatoes for extended periods of time, but it was a while ago and I don't remember all the details.
I'm guessing human milk would be one of the best options. Still maybe not perfect for adults, but it's the single "product" found outside a lab that's specifically made for being a single source of nutrition for humans.
