I have played both games dozens of times on Playstation but I'd love to add both of them to my Steam collection. The Steamdatabse recently updated both of these games, so they should be coming soon.

FF7- SteamDB Link

FF8- SteamDB Link

and here is the updated logo for each on Steam:

FF7- Steam Community Link

FF8- Steam Community Link

Both games should be getting Steam achievements, which would definitley make me want to play them through again, if not just for the nostalgia.

Has anyone heard anything else?
Who is excited for this?

I'm not going to be excited until someone tells me if it's worth playing on today PC's. I mean, the music has great quality? what about the movies? it will run on 4:3? there's Xbox 360's controller compatibility? the backgrounds look good? what about the graphics?.

Maybe it's a slightly improved version from the one that it's on the Square Enix store. I have a PSP, so i don't how if i have to get it in there or not :/.

I own the really old original PC release of FF7, it's so old it doesn't even work on newer operating systems, I think the last it worked on was Windows XP (Maybe) watch these steam releases have the same issue.

My fiancee found a copy in her parent's basement and gave it to me, it doesn't work on Windows 7 or 8. Square Enix did release a slightly updated version through their store so it should have updated compatibility.

It's compatible for sure. New Steam releases will always be tested with Windows 7 at least for now. If it doesn't work on the biggest OS in Steam, they'll have a problem.

Look at the steam release for the original XCOM and other old dosbox type games that are on steam.

they usually come packaged with what you would need to run them that works straight through steam.

besides it would probably the most recent pc release they did on their own online store.

Final Fantasy 13 is a nice looking game, but most people found it to be pretty meh. Many of the older games are considered RPG classics.

Is that the one that has the three hour long corridor at the beginning? Or is that the MMO that banned anyone who found a way to beat the final boss?

Ouch. Glad I stopped at ten when my friend said "no, it gets better, you just need to wait until 2/3 the way through the game until the world REALLY opens up.

I consider FF13 to be a good RPG, but with the wrong name. :) Its linearity means it has more in common with the Grandia games (at least, the first two which I've played) and fans of those will probably enjoy it a lot more than those expecting a modern Final Fantasy, which seems unlikely to ever really happen now.

Also, 13 did lead on to 13-2, which, while definitely flawed and still not really a FF, was a weird and quite wonderful game.

I'd say it's a lot less than half. In fact, I'd say it makes it less fun, because I can't actually PLAY the game due to time constraints. (I think you're being sarcastic, right?)

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I'm more of a Dragon Quest guy.

Either way, my PS1 emulator and gamepad still work fine, so unless there are some big improvements for the PC crowd, or unless they're under five bucks, I'm probably gonna pass.

Well Square was going bankrupt, and they asked the CEO/Owner/whoever to be the head of the creation of their "last" game. They never thought it would be a huge success. Therefore, their final game= final fantasy

You're right and are in no way just repeating an incredibly overused joke. I think you have a lawsuit on your hands against them, the makers of Neverending Story (Not even two hours long) and the makers of Endless Space as most scientists believe that the universe does have bounds and therefore, ends.

I'm getting a lot of mileage out of TVtropes in this thread, but here you go. This is a pretty good overview on why VII is just as cool to hate today as it was to love in the nineties.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

So you're arguing that it's obsolete? I think it's still a good game. Why are you saying VII is more copied than IV, even though IV is older?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

First of all because IV isn't copied more then RE was in the PS1 era, and secondly because 4 (and all other FF games) are a copy of Dragon Warrior, which came out in '86 compared to FF1's '87 release date.

Also, never once do I or that article claim that it's obsolete. All both of us are saying is that it seems like it sucks today because it's so contrived and cliched, but that's where all of those cliches come from, so it was ground breaking at the time.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I have no idea what you're talking about when comparing IV to Resident Evil. 6you7me said that 4 is better than 7 and you said that it only seems better because 7 has become cliched. 7 was imitating 4, so your position is confusing.

On to obsolete stuff: I think you're confused about what obsolete means. If something has become cliched due to design improvements/evolutions/replacements, it has become obsolete. If a thing is good only because it was once ground-breaking but is no longer relevant, it's obsolete. You seem to be saying that's what happened.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't understand why you're having so much trouble comprehending my simple comments. My position is that VII is overrated because so many other games copied it, and if you played those games first, it makes VII seem cliched. VII was absolutely not imitating IV, I have no idea where you're getting that from. Just because a game is a sequel doesn't make it an imitator, and even if it is, there aren't thousands of other games imitating IV.

And you are clearly the one that doesn't understand how to use the word obsolete. It means "no longer used," or "out of date" not "cliched" or however you're trying to use it. VII is still worth playing, if only to see where all the tropes from the nineties PS1 era RPGs came from, just like how it's important to play Half-Life 1 to see where most cinematic FPS came from. If you somehow fail to understand this, too, then I don't know how I can explain it any more simply.

A side note: I think you meant that I missed your points, but you just said that I got all of them. If I avoid missing them, that means I didn't miss them. "And you somehow managed to avoid missing every single point I made[...]"

Not to get back into the whole thing again, but you're fairly difficult to understand some of the time, so I have to guess at what you mean. That particular mistake was easy to make assumptions about, but others have been more difficult.

Unless of course you actually meant that I understood some of your points, which would be a third interpretation that doesn't match what you actually wrote...

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You're right there, but I hard to see how I'm difficult to understand in any other point I made. I started by saying "FFVII looks bad and cliched today because you played all the games that copied and refined its idea first" and you somehow took that to mean "FFVII is useless and your argument is stupid because FFIV has actually been copied more even though it hasn't."

I'm curious what you meant when you said "7 was imitating 4" or "You're arguing that it's obsolete?" even though I didn't say that at all in my first post. Anyway, I'm done now, too, because you're arguing against points I never made and then trying to argue that I'm wrong by pretending you never said the things you said.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No, I definitely said what I said, which is what you're quoting now. You just aren't understanding what it means and you don't understand that what you said (which was very vague) suggests that 7 is no longer relevant because it is cliched.

FF7 was similar to FF4, which means that 4 is also cliched, right? That's what I meant by "7 was imitating 4."

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I never said that 7 is no longer relevant. Actually, I said the EXACT opposite. I said "VII is still worth playing," in fact. Your second argument is a huge fallacy for several reasons. First off, I said that just because 7 is a sequel to 4, it's not imitating it. They're different in several fundamental ways, most importantly the story, where many rpgs of the PS1 era are literally just carbon copies of 7. Based on this, you either aren't reading my posts, are choosing to ignore points that you don't agree with or cant't refute, or you simply don't understand English, and no matter which of the three, there's no point arguing with you any more.

Clarification points:

  1. You actually never said anything about the story element until now. Your posts make more sense if I interpret them as being about FF7's story.
  2. You never said anything about 7 not imitating 4. You actually said that all of them imitate Dragon Warrior, which means that you think that 7 and 4 are similar (both like Dragon Warrior.)
  3. You did say something about 4 being copied less than Resident Evil. Maybe you meant to say it was copied less than FF7? You said, "First of all because IV isn't copied more then RE was [...]"
  4. I know you said 7 was worth playing, but you said it AFTER you made the post linking to the article which you said applied to FF7. The article is about things that are "so overdone," which would make them not worth a person's time since everyone is likely to have seen the same things done elsewhere. That's what lead me to use the term obsolete.

I'll only buy FF7 again if they completely update the graphics. Got so tired of them teasing a remade FF7 every year or so that I got burned out on caring about the game. Plus last time I bought it for the PC, it looked like crap. 19" TV screen PS1 it was amazing, stretched beyond that... just doesnt scale up well at all.

This is my concern. 3D graphics from the PS1 era didn't age very well. ePSXe and PCSX emulators have added antialiasing and anisotropic filtering in 3D PS1 games, but they can only do much with such low-poly models.
