I honestly had to ask when I saw it too. Just paying it forward. The image I saw was a longer list, and I tried like 20 or however many until I was told too many code attempts and had to wait to try more. I didn't see this list very quickly, and the ones I tried were already taken on it, but maybe one day you or I will get lucky.

You can check keys by following these instructions.
1.go to this page: https://store.steampowered.com/account/registerkey
2.open the browser developer tools (like F12), and go to the network tab
3.activate your key
4.look at the XHR request and view the server's response, it will tell you the subID and the name of the game you tried to activate
5.you can then look up the subID in SteamDB

Are you able to provide a picture or more info on where the subID is? I received a code for Dungeons 3 from Lootboy, but own the game already. I know some of the copies on steamDB say "No cross region trading and gifting", and I would like to make an appropriate giveaway. I am at step 4 (I have the dev tools open, on the network tab, tried to activate the key even though I already own it, and now trying to find the subID/name in the XHR request)

Yea, I already use the extension (I had posted a pic below of what it looks like when trying to redeem a used key)
I figured it out with your method and some clicking around though, and it helped me identify my key's subID (I wasn't sure the SteamDB link was bringing me to the right one)
Activate Product Page > Dev Tools > Network tab > Input game key on product page and hit activate > Look for "ajaxregisterkey/" in the Name column and click on it > Scroll right while looking for "packageid" > Match it on SteamDB

Ok, ok say you already own game X and go to register key and are told key in question is for game X and not activated it follows the key is still valid or did I miss something?

If you own game X, and you have another key for a game, that you try to activate, and it happens that it is also X. So Steam will tell you that it is X only, but it won't tell you if the key is valid or not (and trying it while you have the game won't change the unknown status of the key : if it was valid it's still valid, if it was a dupe, it's still a dupe). If someone else later, that doesn't have the game X, tries the key, it will be redeemed, or give a dupe error message.

In that situation, Steam will only say that the product is already owned. It will not change the status of the key, used or not, but it will not tell you that information about status.
