Explain this shit....

Yup, I've seen a few people with achievements in games that can never actually reward them, which would be the only reason to really use it.

What do you mean "now"? People have been hacking achievements ever since achievements were implemented, and not just on steam. The real problem here is actually caring that someone else did it when it doesn't even effect you at all.

I use sam so I can sneak peek on hidden achievements pictures. If the achievement picture is in a form of letter or a number, I won't revert it back :P

I said it before and I'll say it again: I find achievements to be one of the worst things to happen to games. I didn't need that crap back in the day to enjoy games and I don't need them now. They don't have any purpose except being annoying. It's sad if game devs can't make their games interesting enough to make it replayable and have to force in achievements. Games are supposed to be fun in some way. Personally, I have no fun in grinding in a game or do the most stupid shit just to have something plop up and tell me I'm closer to 100%. If I want to have fun with a game, I'll be creative and find out stuff myself, don't need to achievements for that.

If they'd make it an optional thing that'd be great. Those who want to have this in games for whatever reason would be happy as well as the other party. But I just don't want this shit to interupt my gaming experience. As long as this stuff can't get disabled and will always in some way interfere with playing the game and I have this opportunity, I'll continue to use it. I could to some amount understand all the crying if it would do anything in multiplayer, but this is just even more pathetic than those who unlock them to show off and feel proud about something they "achieved" in a game.

And now go boo and flame me for being such an evil cheating bastard if it makes you feel better about yourself.

Wollen wir uns jetzt über die Bildungsqualität in Berlin unterhalten? Oder wollen wir nun darüber reden warum du die Achievements nicht einfach ignorieren kannst und daher zu SAM greifst um sie freizuschalten?

You can disable the notification when you receive achievements, thus making them completely optional. If you hate and/or don't care about achievements, what is the point in cheating them in?

"You can disable the notification when you receive achievements, thus making them completely optional. "
And that ("completely optional) my friend is exactly not the case as I pointed out. Besides that, the cosmetic "issue" was only 50% of what I wrote and it wasn't ALWAYS possible to disable them. In GFWL as well.

I don't expect you to understand my point of view, but saying things like "I wanna see what he has to say now" is kind of immature witch-hunting don't you think? Live and let live for fucks sake.

In Binding of Isaac they are quite good. If you get Archievments, you get new ingame Items. That made me play that game for 130 hours now.

I wish Steam took achievements more seriously. Xbox and Playstation have their trophies/achievements tightly controlled, and that's great.

Right, because achievements are completely relevant for the story and gameplay. It's just not a complete game without them. Whenever I was playing games in my childhood I always felt something was missing but then achievements came that told me how to play and then everything was better.

Steam already protects some of the achievements so they can't get unlocked with the help of tools. So if they really cared, they'd do more. And it's perfectly possible to "cheat" achievements on those console too. At least on PS3, don't have an X-Box.

When did I say they were relevant to anything? They add something to the game for me and many others. I'm simply annoyed that they never took them as seriously as the consoles. Stop looking for a fight.

Why, explain to me/us why you feel steam should dedicate valuable man hours into instilling some kind of DRM or protections for achievements, something that affects neither you or the "cheater" or anyone else for that matter.

Its like the people who get up and arms about people using cheats in SINGLE PLAYER games, Ive seen more then once that people advocated death to those who cheat themselves.

Seriously, achievements add nothing and remove nothing. If you are so easily offended by a few bits of code and some highlighted pictures, perhapes you should just get off the internet now. You dont even get "points" like xbox live, I dont even... So please, explain to me why you wish that achievements should be protected, other then, "well because people shouldnt be allowed to cheat..."

You're certainly not someone who cares about achievements, which is probably why your reasoning is so flawed. As someone who enjoys collecting achievements, I can tell you why I would like them more tightly controlled:

Earning an achievement should be something to be proud of, something that your friends can admire, something that shows your hard work/skill etc. If the ability to "cheat" these achievements exists, these achievements lose all their appeal/value because there's no telling how they were really achieved.

Your last paragraph is funny because I have literally no idea why you're being so antagonistic. It's almost as though you replied to the wrong person (which I will forgive you for if you did). The amount of assumptions you've made about me, and the argument you've created is ridiculous. I'm not looking for a fight, so perhaps you should calm down and stop getting so upset, all because I made a comment in defense of achievements.

They just download savegames I guess. I personally do not look at the global statistics anymore, they are lies anyways. But I have to say that I once "hacked" archievements unintentionally, too. In Binding of Isaac. I already had like 89% of the archievment, but then logged in on a friends pc and forgot that my steam cloud for isaac was off. So I instantly got like 10 archievments when I ran it. But the rest of my archievments are very hardly earned.

Except.. you know, using something like SAM doesnt affect any kind of "leader board". Unless you were just making a blanket statement that everyone that would use SAM, regardless of the reason, also hacks MP games and by connection leader-boards.

Using SAM, you can undo achievements and get them again. Hacking is good, especially during MP where others can see it.

I still am not convinced that achievements even add anything to the gaming experience whatsoever (with the exception of achievments that actually reward you with some kind of in-game, or inter-game, content). I miss the days when there was no such thing as an arbitrary "achievement" list, and the only achievements that you accomplished were real ones that you set for yourself. Now it seems it is all about bragging rights, which, to be blunt, does nothing for anyone.

When done right they can. For a story based game, achievements for finding hidden pieces of story can enhance the experience by giving an extra lure to actually go find them or heck, for the player to even know it exists. Like in Ys II I wouldn't have known of half the hilarious things that you can do in that game if it hadn't been for the publisher making a lot of those into achievements.

I just see it as a different way to play. It's not that much different from the game itself having a bunch of extra stuff that you have to do X to get and people who check that off. Now achievements just give a way to show off you did it and it's just a shame people would have them when there's pretty much no point to it. I like earning achievements because it lets me feel accomplished, hacking them would just have no point and not have the same result for me.
