Send the gift to an email that you own. There will be a link in that email that allows the first person to click on it receive the gift.

it's been mentioned before, but here's a hint: TAKE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS OUT OF THE LINK YOU GET! All you need is the first link parameters--?client= and anything after that are unnecessary, and may result in random people you don't know sending you emails that you don't want.

Very handy way to get rid of DOTA2 invites, I must add.
Also, to hide gifts for friends without just sending them the game directly. Hide the URL in cards, embed them in programs, be creative! Life is one big puzzle! :P
