Actually Deus Ex could be closer to the actual successor than Bioshock.

Yup, Bioshock was intended as a succession to System Shock but failed to meet expectations. I do not know about Bioshock Infinite though, but BS 1 and 2 did not target the same audience as SS2 while Deus Ex did.
After all, both Deus Ex and SS were originally designed by Warren Spector.

And I think those mods just sold me. Hopefully having graphics mods won't fuck with my achievements.

What do you think the sys req are for playing w/ the mods. I was thinking of installing it on my dinky laptop (AMD E300 APU 1.6 dual core , 4gb ram) to play when traveling.

And to answer my own question, I should be fine.

Wow!
Thats crazy, makes me want to buy it, played it ages ago though.

Bioshock is watered down version of system shock, so yeah, System Shock 2 definitely holds up.

System Shock 2 didn't come out for DOS, so why would you use DOSBox lol
You mean the first System Shock?

I love SS2 one of my top 5 game ever. But that UI definitely does not hold up, everything takes like two more actions than it would take today. Not saying that you cant look past it if you really like everything else about the game, but I can definitely see it deterring someone from enjoying the game fully or heck even playing past the first half hour at all.

What they did with that UI and inventory was amazing though. There was so many times when I was managing stuff in the inventory, only to see a hybrid come shuffling around a corner and charge at me.
Those moments were among the best in the game for me.

Might sound stupid, but never use graphical upgrade mods for horror games. The game's ugliness gives it a special new, "under your skin" scare. I know it's weird, but part of why I still think the first Silent Hill game is the scariest is it's jittering, alien-looking and garbled graphics. Redo the same game, step by step, using a gorgeous Final Fantasy 15 engine (but leaving the art direction to SH's style), and the game would just not be as scary.
To answer your question, I never heard about it until I was, say, 20 or 21 years old. I managed to complete it, and it's in my favourites for good now. That happened 4 years ago... So yeah, it holds up more than you'd even think. Go for it.

I was jus gonna start a thread about this. THanks! *scrolling down to find the answer

I finished it a month or two ago, and as a fan of Deus Ex, I totally loved System Shock 2. So many good things you don't find anymore in recent games.

I have yet to play it, but picked up during the Steam sale. I look forward to seeing what all the love is about.

Seeing what mods can do to it I decided to buy it too. Thanks for the tip!

So, yeah, over a decade later, do you think System Shock 2 holds up and is worth playing (especially for a huge fan of the Bioshock series)? Yes or no with reasons and stuff.
Edit: And I just bought it. Anywho, carry on with the discussion of how well it holds up :)
