What's your favorite Foo Fighters album?

Don't worry, I know where my towel is. ;)

Not even close. Not when you have all-eighth-note-bands like The Arcade Fire (who, I will admit, write really great lyrics but eternally boring songs) or semi-talented @ss-clowns like Kanye who throw down lyrics like "you're such a ------ hoe, but I love it" and call it art, "most overrated band ever" isn't even in the neighborhood for Foo Fighters, whether you like them or not.
The Foo Fighters are practically the only relevant rock band that gets played on the radio these days and are one of the only acts to help stem the tide of horrific DJ tracks being passed off as original music. I can go blow-by-blow and break down how truly good some of their songs are, if you'd like. There's actually a lot more technicianship in many of their songs than is obvious at first listen, which is precisely what makes them good. I mean, they're not insane music theory wizards like Dream Theater, Steve Morse, Steve Vai, or Jeff Beck, but they're not trying to be...they love rock and roll and want to create songs that are played by real musicians that people actually want to hear. While they're at it, they do some pretty interesting things, both structurally and dynamically speaking, and yet it's completely listenable for a wide audience. I don't know if you've ever written music, but that's pretty hard to do, especially consistently.
Even if you're just talking about rock bands...as long as Nickelback exists, pretty much everyone else is safe for the time being. :D

Thanks for the train! My favorite album is the original one since I was really interested to see what Dave Grohl would do after Nirvana. I think the later stuff is probably better but I'm so attached to the first one since I listened to it so much.

Yeah, you should spin some later stuff. The two most recent ones were pretty good, but the two before that (Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace and Wasting Light) have managed to claw their way to the top of my personal Foo favorites list. Wasting Light was recording to freaking TAPE in Dave's garage using an old sound board, and it sounds like a million dollars. There's something to be said for recording live to multi-track in the studio, and then just making minor fixes in post-production. It always makes the band have more of a live, together sound because, well, that's precisely what it is...not just individual tracks pasted together (which is what most songs are these days). That older technique (which, of course, was used because there were technical limitations that prevented the perfection -- and often, coldness -- of today's music tracks) can be heard on so many classic tracks...Bohemian Rhapsody, Carry On Wayward Son, Dark Side of the Moon, etc. Most of these tracks are more complex to play than the average modern track, and yet they needed less production because the musicians simply had to be better, and tighter as a band. Anyway, my mini-rant aside, I love that Dave decided to do an album this way...he's just a guy that loves music and all of its history, and wants to embrace things like that. It shows a lot of soul and having his musical priorities in the right place.
In any case, you should definitely check out both of those albums. Spin them both a few times...around listen 4 or 5 on each one, you'll suddenly shift from going "well, this is pretty good, but just sounds like Foo Fighters" to "holy crap, how did I not notice how awesome this album was before?" ๐

Yeah I also have Colour and the shape and Nothing left to lose but then I fell off. I still hear some of their new stuff sometimes but haven't really checked them out. I'm glad they're still around and I've been meaning to listen to their new stuff.
What's funny is that I remember that Foo Fighters was just recorded with Dave himself doing all the parts before he even got the band so it was really put together in totally the opposite way! But yeah, I'm definitely going to check the new stuff out. :)

Yeah, he kept adding new members. I mean, three guitars, sheesh. I think that he realized that while he's a pretty badass drummer, he was, especially at the time, still learning a lot about guitar. For what he wanted to do with the band, he needed to bring in other talent to fill out the sound. Schiflett came on board during that third album (I think mostly for touring), and has been part of the band ever since. The current lineup has actually been representative of the band longer than anything else. Those early days had a lot of chaos. :)

Well, I was so busy working on the last Trash Tornadoโข and the Halloween Train, that I completely failed to notice that I had recently gone sailing past 5,000 GAs on Steamgifts! Yeah, I know, right? So, what's the best way to celebrate? GIVE AWAY MORE STUFF!!! ๐๐ค๐ค๐ค
This is just a simple train...the basic requirement is level 3+ for the whole thing. I think that there are a couple of nice little surprises that you don't see too often toward the end.
Have fun riding the 5K Train! ๐๐๐๐๐๐
The usual disclaimer: I may have a couple of keys in here that are a little old. They should work just fine, but if they don't, you agree to delete the GA without raising a big stink. It's very likely that I'll come up with a consolation game for you, so long as you don't create a big hassle in my life. If you're not ok with this, then please don't ride. Thanks.
Oh, and another thing...please activate your wins soon after I send out the keys. Seems like every train, I have to chase down 3-4 people. It's not like this is a lot of work for you...I took all of the time (and money) to create the GA train, so please have the common courtesy to claim the free stuff I gave you. It's an important part of the SG culture. Again, thanks. :)
