True it seems a bit of a childish response but at the same time, the game itself could really hurt the image of the company. So in the end, both parties suffer.

Hard to hurt the rep of the CRA (Canada's IRS). I don't think they really care about their reputation :)

If the company didn't care at all, they wouldn't have fired him though :p

I think the journalist got the guy fired more than anything else.

Before they reported on it, it would have been a very niche game. Unlikely would have been played by more than a few hundred (maybe thousands) of people worldwide. It was basically just him venting/ranting about his job to a small audience.

But once they reported on it, the tax agency really had no choice but to fire an employee who was seen to be actively mocking his job and the agency.

Guy makes a game about how much he hates his stupid job that gave him an income. Now he doesn't have the job he clearly hates and thinks isn't worth his time.

I'm sure he should be feeling quite happy about it, given that he was trashing his job and the people he had to deal with...

I'm sure there are plenty of other people out there without a job that would just love the opportunity to take his place. The fact he showed such disdain for his work and hated the people he had to interact with showed he probably wasn't very dedicated to it, so can't see any reason not to dump his ass and find someone else. And as I said, the guy clearly hates working there and thinks the work is a waste of his precious time and obvious talents, so this is really a non issue.

He was likely just venting. When I worked at a call center back in the day I always did my job as best as I could.

That didn't stop me from ranting about the 'bad ones' with co-workers outside of work - laughing about the negatives was just a way to de-stress.

hes using a gaming medium to basically attack his job. its not right to just hide behind the banner of satire when you're insulting your workplace. the guy hates his job, he hates who he deals with, he thinks its not worth his time and effort, so he got fired. i dont see why any of it matters, the guy will no doubt be happier now that he doesnt have to have the burden or working in that 'hell hole', and the company can hire someone new. seems like everyones the winner :D

and there is actually a difference between bitching about work with friends, and going and publically announcing that your job is shit and the people you deal with are shit :) big difference between friends and public announcements to everyone... one is quiet and private, and the other is a public attack on the business and an insult to the people who interact with it.

not looking to start an argument, just simply stating that i think the guy brought it on himself, and the company didn't do anything wrong... if anything, they were in the right. and in the end, everyone i think is happy with the outcome :)

Yeh, you're right. You can't really publicly mock your job and employer without at least some sort of repercussions.

What an employee does in their spare time is none of the employer's business. None. Whatsoever.

This reminds me of how Scott Adams, creator of Dilbert, based his comic on his job and people he worked with at the time.

I wouldn't exactly say that Dilbert is an approving portrayal of the life of a software engineer.
