The first Sub-Zero was resurrected as Noob after dying in the first game. The Sub-Zero thereafter is the original's brother.
As for Ermac, there's a lot of souls floating around inside that dude.

I read some time ago that Ermac is not a real MK character originally. Just sometimes the game war glitching and as a result the color of some other reflected in the image characters changed to red. So fans of the game began to think about him as a secret character, and then the developers have added it as an independent character in the next games.

That's pretty much it, yes. The only thing the sites tend to omit is that the palette merge glitch with the Error Macro message only happened on the arcade boards, not on the ports.

Well, Noob Saibot was the original, more powerful Sub-Zero, and he got killed by Scorpion. So Scorpion obviously rises above.
Smoke was a Lin Kuei, but not as powerful as Sub-Zero.
Reptile gets killed off by Shao Kahn's Priest, so he can't be the best if he's dead.
And Ermac was a combination of Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Reptile, and Smoke (later on, many many other souls, as well). So they're all fucked there XD
Rain is ranked above Ermac, so Rain must be the most powerful. Purple for the win :D

Yeah, there are several ninjas left out like Tremor, Chameleon, the cyborgs, etc. I feel like the ones in the poll are our "main" dudes, but that's obviously up for debate.
