You can pick your own nose, but you can't pick your friend's nose.

For me it says:

"This product will NOT work in the following countries: United States, Canada, Albania, Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, the Former Yugoslav Republic of, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom, Holy See (Vatican City State), Åland Islands, Faroe Islands, Gibraltar, Guernsey, Isle of Man, Jersey, Svalbard and Jan Mayen, Russian Federation, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Republic of, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, New Zealand, Australia, Papua New Guinea, Cook Islands, Norfolk Island, Niue, Tokelau."

Spain is not here(also not in your list), but United States is in mine, seems weird.

Also about the games themselves:

"Dead Island: Game of the Year Edition (USA)

Dead Island: Riptide - Fashion Victim DLC

Dead Island Riptide (ASIA)

Dead Island: Riptide - Survivor Pack DLC

Escape Dead Island (ASIA)"

Prices in €

And I live in Spain...why Asia, idk...

That statement could be said for many games, since nowadays more money is put into marketing than making the product. My favourite example is Titanfall. Only people still more or less remember what was Dead Island and almost everybody forgot what Titanfall was.

Yeah, Rachel, it is available everywhere, but region-specific. Seems like after Capcom, all publishers jumped on this ship in an instant. It has an EU2 lock for me.

Still overpriced for an uninteresting dime-a-dozen zombie shooter though, so not really a loss even if I couldn't get it.

I think we can thank the grey market for getting massive profits on these bundles all the time with them carrying ROW keys thus far.
Although it is rare to see somebody going as low as dividing the West to regions too. At least EU1/EU2, and NA tends to be a single region.
(Then again, Square Enix's US branch isn't exactly known for their vast empathy towards their customers…)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I had never known about all these region restrictions until the hoopla about the Namco Bandai Bundle from HB and very recently the CAPCOM bundle :( It would be nice if countries would give equal access to uncut versions/non-region locked versions of games, but that's beyond my scope of understanding.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It because of regional pricing. How should I put it… if you work for a student minimum wage there, that is the monthly salary of an upper middle class engineer in Eastern Europe. But if we put it backwards and buy games at the cheap region…

In this case it is a little different though. Personal example: I earn 500 Euros a month. Games are EU2 range, so AAA costs 50-60 Euros. Therefore, around here it is a viable option to buy from the grey market, because they put keys from bundles there at prices no store can compete with in the EU2 region. (And many people don't even know about bundles or know a foreign language to understand those sites, whereas G2A supports all languages and currencies from the poorer countries.) And these regions are not something Steam made up but publishers.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

TIL

Thanks for the explanation. It is quite frustrating, but I suppose wherever money is involved there is bound to be some kind of exploitation or dirty work behind the scenes

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

So much so that before the region locks, many Russian groups earned their daily living by Steam trades on public or somewhat hidden forums. Now they have to deal with selling bundle games on G2A and co.
So, you are right, exploitation is always present. This region also has a long history of doing so, especially in the past 100 years.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Not really a "Capcom" effect, Dead Island always had weird region-locking. For example, USAnians had to live with logo where zombie is only standing next to the tree, not nicely hanging from it - which also meant they received special region just for themselves. And lots of funny stuff like that.

i thought dead island had region restrictions for many years, before people started noticing

what are you basing your claim on? '86% of the 19,444 user reviews for this game are positive', the first one is from 2011 & is very good, i'm not even into zombies in the first place but i know left 4 dead & walking dead for example are good games, dead island 1 is almost up there

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

'86% of the 19,444 user reviews for this game are positive',

About Steam reviews… Bad Rats is 74% positive. Steam reviews are a good thing to get maybe a general feel on something, but when it is positive, always check the negative ones: they are the ones who usually tell the truth, when they are not obviously trolling. Sadly thanks to the original trader groups, it doesn't work the other way around, you cannot get real information about low-rated games from positive reviews.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

unlike bad rats, it's a major game that also has press reviews, gameplay footage, free weekends if i remember, etc

there is simply no reason to make a troll review for dead island 1, so i dont get what makes you think it's some generic zombie game?

to put it another way, i'm an fps guy, there are indeed too many shooters out there, lots of copying, lots of crap from strange countries, & so on, but how can i say anything about a particular one until i research it for a couple min

or wait, a better example is how i DONT like fantasy settings, to me it's the same old magic, british accents, no guns, orchestral music, monsters, i just turn off & avoid willingly looking for fantasy games or movies, but i cant actually say much unless i research the game, i did enjoy playing fable1 & witcher seems extremely promising... is this similar to where you're coming from, maybe not liking zombies or shooters? (dead island is more melee & scavenging focused actually)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

What makes me think? I saw gameplay. I honestly cannot tell the difference between this, Left 4 Dead, or any other team-centric TPS zombie slasher. They have similar levels, similar weapons, similar gameplay, similar everything.

About fantasy: yep, it tends to be the same, especially in ARPGs since the early 2000s. For example, if you'd rename the Van Helsing series to, say, for example, Enclave 2 or anything else, nobody would be able to tell the difference.

On reviews: true, what you say is all there. But I still would like to point our Payday 2 now that is dropping due to people posting negative reviews with the introduction of microtransaction (I am somewhat baffled that people really were this naive that believed it won't happen), or when Skyrim lost like 12% at the announcement of paid mods.
Steam reviews have some uses, but the aggregated score, especially thanks to this dualist nature, has very limited information in it. To use another example, when I initially played Remember Me, it was red with around 60% rating. Now I think it is over 85%. And the game didn't change, wasn't updated, and even the priced didn't really drop, and even the review amount didn't increase that much, it just suddenly had a different composition.

All I'm trying to say is don't always think that reviews are that important. Last year we had a scandal about how the press is bribed to always write good reviews on bad games, this year we had a scandal on a huge Steam group writing good reviews on bad games for free keys. It's an easily exploited system.

well i just want to add my personal experience, which aligns with what appears to be a general consensus across both users & legitimate press, being a decent game in a genre is different from not being into the genre

the other issue is what CAN you do in a zombie game, most will have to have the same ideas really, but it's the delivery that matters

half-life is amazing due the delivery, atmosphere, & care taken with development, even though it's generic or borderline ridiculous on paper or in a trailer

i've been toying with the idea of starting my own review site/blog since the current systems arent satisfactory, what i want is a simple list of pros & cons, but also a relevance or inspiration factor when considering game design or technical achievement, the end result will be people deciding if the pros/cons fit their concerns (that's why i started checking gameplay & nearly ignore reviews years ago, it's a game so i need to see how it plays & maybe some info on how long it lasts... if my steam profile isnt obvious, i like an extremely varied amount of games & enjoy being a human encyclopedia, same goes for music)

The problem with review blogs is that unless you don't have enough online followers already, nobody will read it. Steam review system is bad, but at least it gives you access to readers. Of course it has the same problem as Metacritic, that many users don't take it seriously, and it is easy to get lost in the upvoted troll-y or meme-ish "reviews".

Yet again it's time to promote "https://steamcommunity.com/groups/foruncut"

Steam for Uncut!
The aim of this group is to encourage publishers and Valve to desist using constraints such as region locks and other customer harassments.

Furthermore they want to convince Valve to introduce a legally binding and safe age verification system for adult German Steam users. The goal of the age verification is to give access to games, which would otherwise be censored - or not available at all -, to those persons who have successfully proven their age. Publishers would be on the safe side by not disseminating rated content to minors.

It is completely legal for adults living in Germany to order games abroad, which are otherwise censored or not legally purchasable in Germany. Moreover, our intent does not breach German law, nor does it violate the guidelines of the regulating bodies “USK” and “BPjM”!
