One recent topic on forum made me feel something I'd like to express. Unfortunately, that topic was closed by TS, so I'd like to start mine instead. So... :)

One guy who had a lot of shooting practice during his service in the army forces told that playing shooters with controller, though is not realistic at all, is more realistic then scoring series of headshots some players might achieve in 180-degree-turn-jump being 200+ meters afar from their targets, while it is impossible while shooting live ammo, especially if you run or jump with a gun.

Indeed, targeting with analog sticks might make you miss a lot. But with practice you might make it miss less and even aim pretty good. Isn't it a challenge? Isn't it a mastery?.. OK, this might be just another type of grind some masochistic players like me like to undertake. But in my case it makes me get more fun from game, 'cuz I feel sort of boredom when I play too good at FPS, so I might need some handicap to return fun to my gameplay :)

Am I the only one who feels like that? Feel free to express your opinions. And, please, be polite as much as it's possible. I don't like my thread turning in another field of holy war between controller- and kb+mouse-players.

Thanks a lot :)

UPD: Fixed a "god" typo. It was meant to be "good" instead. Sorry for inconvenience :(

I'm not a fan of deliberately inconveniencing myself, particularly in something as fundamental as the basic controls of a game. I dislike controllers compared to mouse look because it is both less precise and takes longer to perform the same action using an analogue stick. I wouldn't mind having a controller for the actual character movement though, where controlling the speed and direction of movement in an analogue fashion might actually be useful. I wonder if it would actually work to use the controller for movement and the mouse for looking at the same time.

I think it might be possible, at least in some games.

You are looking for this.

I agree with you on all parts, not sure how accurate that little device is though...

I play many games with my 360 controller, but there are certain ones, like Borderlands 2, which I've taken to unplugging my 360 controller when playing. I actually narrowed down a save corruption/crash issue to it coinciding with me having the controller hooked up, believe it or not. So yeah, that's one game.

KBM for computers. Controllers for consoles.
That being said, FPS' and RTS' on consoles just make me upset.

Exactly. I use controller for just few console ports/console designed games like Castle Crashers etc.

I grew up with keyboard only and was so happy when I got a mouse. I was terrible with controllers and their limitations.

Using a controller is like eating a soup with a fork. For me it's just extra effort for nothing.

I grew up with an Xbox and part-time N64, so I'm used to controllers. Only played stuff like Rayman and Roller Coaster Tycoon on PC.

For any FPS I'll use my wireless 360 controller, and for most games; if possible.
Only in rare instances where controller support exists; I don't use it - like Skyrim. I love having all those extra shortcuts in Skyrim and it's easier to aim as a deadly archer/mage.

I've tried, and it's just awful. It's like trying to write with your feet.

It really depends, but I prefer to use a controller with games that actually support it. If I have to go in and modify a bunch of stuff just to get a controller to work then I wont. I play BL2 with a controller. I bought Half Life 2 and CS:GO in the Summer Sale, but I will most likely use M+KB in those games.

Games I use a wired Xbox 360 controller in:

Warhammer Space Marine, BL2, Spec Ops the Line, The Last Remnant, Fallout: New Vegas.

A lot of console games have some sort of aim assistance when playing with a controller, since it's impossible to get the same sort of accuracy (or targetting speed) as offered by a decent mouse.

If you want to replicate this with a mouse & keyboard setup, you could always stuff a few strands of cat hair into the aperture on the underside of your rodent, and dial down the DPI settings until you're happy with its inaccuracy.

Would I play a FPS with a controller? Hell no. Would I play Civilization V with a steering wheel, or GRID with a trackball? It's unlikely.

Different strokes for different folks, though :)

I agree with you 110%. I'm playing everything with a controller now.

People use controllers when they have a choice?

Sure, it's up to you if you want to be slower.

I could, but mouse is the way they should be played, that's why I don't play fps on consoles.

One place I feel difficulty should never come from is the controller. If a shooter wants to be challenging, there are plenty of ways of doing that which don't handicap my ability to control the game. I play plenty of games with a controller, but never shooters.

You can never be too good at an fps game that you stop having fun because of your skill. I'd like to be too good and destroy everyone :D

actually, handicapping yourself with a controller on multiplayer is really bad, its like tying your legs on a race, all of the guys who you play with on pc multiplayer use mouses and have a great advantage over you if you dont use a mouse, specially in a game like counter strike where aiming is just as important as breathing.

I agree with you on that topic. KB+mouse is "must have" in such a situation where precision is ultra-important. But if it's no problem missing a shot or two (or loosing the whole battle) I'd choose a controller.

There are a lot of people using controllers for FPS. Ever since the xbox and ps2 days there were many gamers who started out playing fps with a control pad.

I've played against a friend who is ridiculously fast and accurate with a control pad that I swear he's as fast as an above average kb+mouse counterstrike player.

you lie, you can't be so fast and precise on any pad, in CS you easly can turn around in 0.5 sec when you see flashbang grenade, on gamepad you can't do this because fixed speed rotations, to turn back you need much more time, then again to turn back you need more time then using mouse.

Stick movement speed usually isn't fixed. At least not in games that support controllers. They often have sensitivity settings of their own.

drumm meant that putting the stick all the way to the left will make it go so fast, and never faster, but you can move your mouse from one end of your desk to the other and do a 720 in less than a second, even on really low sensitivity.

anyways if you set sensitivity high you can't aim head fast in long distances :) with mouse you control speed by you hand, also you can switch dpi, this takes time and i'm personally don't use this feature.

I don't care about realism, I want control. Mouse & Keyboard offers MUCH better and more delicate control over a gamepad. When I want a thing to happen, I want to be able to make it happen, not hope that it happens :-\

I also play with a 360 controller, but not in multiplayer games... thou sometimes I play BF3 with a controller, when they call me hacker, so I make the game a bit more fair :P (btw I'm not really hacking, it's mostly just pure luck and that I played 100s of hours)

I understand why people would prefer a mouse and keyboard but personally I use my 360 controller for everything and don't have a problem using it for FPS. As long as the sensitivity is turned up a fair amount and you're used to it, I think it works well. But I guess that goes for mouse + keyboard too, if the sensitivity is too low it's not exactly easy to hit everything.
