Thanks for your post. Like you, I am also retarded (in the eyes of the KB+M elite). :)

Am i the only person playing shooters with graphics tablet? :D

Realism in shooters is overrated because it simply sucks. Who would want to play a game in which you die instantly or can't at least run away.

I used to hate gamepad, until I started playing Dark Souls. Bought X360 controller just for this game and got used to it fairly quickly - although, I've played almost 300hrs of DS. I tried playing some other genres with it - shooters, racing games, turn based strategies (yes, X-com), first person cRPGs, third person action games - some of them worked well - some didn't. And while I admit - playing shooters on gamepad can be in a way fun - the only sub-genre of shooters that I found to work well with it was "6 Degrees of Freedom Shooter" - stuff like AquaNox and Descent, where you need 6 axis or 12 keys for movement alone. But more classic shooters - I'm going to stick to my keyboard and gaming mouse.

For my its KB+M for FPS games, but I find myself more comfortable with a wired 360 pad for most third person games (Batman especially) and other games that arent multiplayer. With MP you are just at a huge disadvantage using a pad rather than KB+M.

Interesting topic. I've been a bit desperate lately to achieve any real degree of comfort or skill with a controller. It's definitely a steep learning curve for anyone that didn't start out with one as a kid. My PC died ages ago, and my laptop isn't exactly top-of-the-line where gaming is concerned. I do have a PS3, though, so if I can get competent with a controller I could actually have some fun.
Still, I'll argue to the death with anyone saying a controller is "superior" to using a mouse and keypad. A console user who switches to keypad and mouse will, over time, achieve an equal or greater degree of skill to what they'd known previously, but it just doesn't work that way in reverse.
But your point is taken regarding the greater challenge of using a controller. I'd been considering trying to get my hands on more fluid types of devices (motion controllers, gloves, etc) to solve my "problem," and although I still think that would be rewarding, your OP has caused me to review my opinion of the difficulty of the standard controller. Perhaps, if I stop focusing on how hard it is, and accept the challenge of it, I may actually be able to enjoy myself and learn to use it, at least well enough to play the games, if not become "l33t." :)

I hate the keyboard for movement but hate the controller for aiming more. When possible I like to configure the controller for all the movement with my left hand and do all the aiming and shooting with the mouse in my right.
I wish someone would make a 360 like controller with a trackball where the right stick is.

I use my controller if the game already has controls for it. If not, I usually dont use xPadder and just play normally.

FPS/TPS: KBAM. Being able to move the reticule with a mouse is much easier and accurate than with a gamepad. I find it very tough and tedious to try and line up shots with an analog stick.
Flight/racing/3rd person action: Gamepad. Usually these games require camera control which is easier to do with dual analogs. They also generally require less pinpoint accuracy. Racers/flight games also require much more finite input at times (slight direction change, etc) which is easier to pull off with an analog stick.

One recent topic on forum made me feel something I'd like to express. Unfortunately, that topic was closed by TS, so I'd like to start mine instead. So... :)
One guy who had a lot of shooting practice during his service in the army forces told that playing shooters with controller, though is not realistic at all, is more realistic then scoring series of headshots some players might achieve in 180-degree-turn-jump being 200+ meters afar from their targets, while it is impossible while shooting live ammo, especially if you run or jump with a gun.
Indeed, targeting with analog sticks might make you miss a lot. But with practice you might make it miss less and even aim pretty good. Isn't it a challenge? Isn't it a mastery?.. OK, this might be just another type of grind some masochistic players like me like to undertake. But in my case it makes me get more fun from game, 'cuz I feel sort of boredom when I play too good at FPS, so I might need some handicap to return fun to my gameplay :)
Am I the only one who feels like that? Feel free to express your opinions. And, please, be polite as much as it's possible. I don't like my thread turning in another field of holy war between controller- and kb+mouse-players.
Thanks a lot :)
UPD: Fixed a "god" typo. It was meant to be "good" instead. Sorry for inconvenience :(
