The idiotic comments here don't surprise me. Why do people get so offended once they learn that someone doesn't eat meat? The OP isn't trying to push their views on you, they just asked a simple question. There's no need for all of this hate. Quit being so closed-minded.

Anyway, in response to your question, Albodacious... I'm not a vegan, though I am a vegetarian.

My comment was mostly just a mockery based on the stereotype set on vegans.

I'm absolutely fine with vegan people as long as they don't try to convince me to eat differently, but because I work on a job which involves the occasional dealing with vegans, and it just happens that every single one of them so far have been attention-craving assholes, it only strengthen the stereotype and kinda makes me sick just to hear anyone mention "vegan". :P

But like I said, I'm definitely okay with anyone who mind their own business and don't try to push their beliefs down my throat. Don't be an asshole to me, and I won't be one to you.

If only this whole vegan thing was more about people's eating habits and less about being a part of some community...

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Exactly. I have a feeling that the stereotype we immediately label and consider to be "vegan" is actually vegan "activists". Because you're a vegan doesn't mean you need to push veganism on other, but it just happens that most vegans are "activists" assholes who want the entire world to change to suit them better.

Basically, assholes are assholes, and they unfortunately cause bad stereotypes on certain group of people. :P

True, too bad they are the majority in every group. Or they are at least loudest.

Or they are at least loudest.

That's actually exactly it. Let's say that 10 people go in a store, three of them are asshole. The three assholes are loud and annoying, the first thing you'll assume is, "these ten people were assholes".

That is so very true, unfortunately.

"How do you find out someone's vegan? - You don't have to, they will tell you within the first three minutes of you meeting them."
And honestly, even though this is meant to be some kind of joke, it is what most of them tend to do.

Edit: Ha, I just noticed someone else posted this a little further down already. Well...

It's not very smart of them then, since you can't force anyone and people don't want to feel commanded by others.
I noticed a very long time ago that it's pointless to teach anyone, sooner or later they will find out on their own (and then I get annoyed again because they tell me things all the time I tried to tell them years ago like my god, everyone should do what they want to do) ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Then you might have talked to people that just turned vegetarian.
I never tell anyone about it until we are talking about food or go eating. And then I'm not telling them how disgusting and bad I think it is to eat meat, I just do my thing and am open to answer questions, if they have any.

Well, there's a lot of reasons for going vegan; morality, health, enviroment - sustainability...

I guess his 3 documentaries would sum it up pretty well:

Earthlings (morality)
Cowspiracy (enviroment - sustainability)
Forks over knives (health)

If you prefer to read I would recommend The China Study. I have myself studies about health and the human body as well about diet and nutrition and I advocate 9999999/10 for a vegan lifestyle -veganism ISN'T a diet, just want to remark it because a lot of people think it is-.

Hmm, yes that is exactly why I find it so interesting to learn someone's personal reasons. I do believe in healthy eating, but I believe we have evolved as omnivores and there should be a balance between eating meat and vegetables. I also have some bad eating habits, I eat very few vegetables, I know it's not healthy. So that's why I won't change to a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle soon. I do find it disconcerting how animals bred for mass productions are sometimes treated and the enviromental impact this has. If I find the time I'll have a look into those documentaries, so thank you for that ;)

Oh, no worries! It's good when people is open to debate and look forward to know more about other points of view without the goal of having reason, but to reason for ourselves. I thank you for your politeness, people normally forget that most of us ate meat before and we said things as "I could never go vegetarian/vegan" and make fun of it and then we have to deal to the exactly opposite situation :\

About what you said of being omnivores, it's a great deception, every earthling has been provided by nature all we need for being able to nourish ourselves, and we do not have natural resources for hunting. C'mon, we're not fast, our senses are poor in comparison to predators and eating raw flesh and organs it's not our thing. Also if you study the human body you can see we have the same features as frugivores, while herbivores share only some of them with us and omnivores/carnivores have totally different features (most of them biochemically and biologically). It's just a lot of research and asking the right questions...

What do believe to be true is it true or do we just believe it is because we were taught so and we didn't ever looked any further? Truth can be hard to see...

Comment has been collapsed.

Actually, there are many things hinting towards the fact that the earlier man hunted and ate meat. Namely, jaw bones structure, tools and weapons, etc. I won't try to drive you away from what you believe since nobody is actually absolutely sure about anything, but saying that human being omnivore is a deception seems like taking it a bit too far in my opinion.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I said it because I've done my research... And I won't say that our ancestors ever ate meat, sometimes during the coldest days of the year when they couldn't gather fruits, seeds and berries the had to eat something, right? But I do think it's not comparable situation the one we are in now.

I let you here a vid by Dr. Greger about paleopoo.

Most people tend to have difficulty with understanding views that don't coincide with their own imho. It's not always easy for me either but I try to keep an open mind as much as possible. I respect vegetarians at the very least for being much healthier than me and at least trying to spare animals from suffering.

I certainly am not an evolutionist, I accept what is the most likely with the knowledge that I have, we have teeth for consuming meat and our digestive tract (compared to other animals) is adapted to eating a combination of meat and vegetables/fruit. And there is a long documented history of humans eating a combination of meat, vegetables and fruit. We certainly aren't well adapted for hunting that's true, our best feature is our endurance and intelligence in that regard. Your frugivore theory is certainly interesting, I think it might be possible we started out like that before we developed tools, but honestly I do not know enough about the subject to make my own decision so I will default to what is generally accepted as truth. If you have any sources I would be interested in viewing them.

Nothing is true, everything is permitted. I always liked that video game quote, I do not believe anything is absolutely true, there's always the possibility that I and/or the majority of people are wrong about something.

Maybe you're talking about people addicted in chocolate, carbonated drinks, etc. But it's normal to crave something that you haven't eaten for a long time. For example, I have almost never eaten any cheese puffs in my whole life, only around 5 times, because I never really liked them, but sometimes, I'm thinking that I wouldn't mind eating 1 or 2 cheese puffs - and that's because a long time has passed since I last ate some. This doesn't apply on foods that you completely hate, of course. :P Anyway, the food pyramid includes meat and meat products, even junk food once in a while, so you can't exclude them from your diet.

There are a lot of foods that taste sweet. o.O Bread, for example, that contains polysaccharides because they break to monosaccharides because of your enzymes, so you get a sweet taste. Potatoes too. Anyway, it's all about how addictive a substance is. :P

Telegraph newspaper article from 29/3/2016: Long term vegetarian diet changes human DNA raising risk of cancer and heart disease. It quotes and has a link to a proper Scientific journal.

I encourage people to do their own research.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I think it's talking about population-level changes in DNA over time, rather than a per-person effect. Populations with a long history of vegetarian diet supposedly developed an adaption that allowed them to absorb fatty acids more efficiently; same adaption may unfortunately increase the negative effects of a modern diet with lots of omega-6 vegetable oils etc. Obviously you can't go back and change the region your ancestors came from, but could be worth knowing about if confirmed. Not really vegan specific, but may be more relevant for vegans as we often have diets higher in omega-6.

That Telegraph article was a bit misleading though: 'long-term' meant generations long, not a few decades or something XD
