Today I went with two friends to pay a visit to a 67-year-old man in his mountain cabin. We ate, drank, played cards and spoke (and loughed a lot).
Speaking of the vegetarian girlfriend of one of my friends, this man said that this vegetarianism/veganism is only a trend, and is only given by the wealth of the countries we live in (not related to personal wealth). He said that when he was young, he only ate local products, because there was nothing else, and everybody ate everything they had in the dish. For example, he told he ate his first banana when he was in the army, at about the age of 20. Then he told us an anecdote.
In 1994 he took part as cook in an expedition to climb Mount K2. It was a 90-day journey, so they gathered several times during the previous year, to know each other well and be sure to bring all things (especially medicines) each member would need. They brought several assorted food and K-Rations, then bought vegetables and goats in the villages on the road.
After starting the expedition, when they set up camp and started to eat, a man and a woman said they were vegetarians and didn't want to eat meat. The cook then got angry, shouted and swore, and the priest who was with them agreed with him XD. He told he wasn't going to give less vegetables to the others and more to them, because rations were calculated and the others had to eat their own full meal.
After ten days, one of the two vegetarians went to the cook and asked for meat. After five days more, the other one asked for it too.
He told that, one year later, they all met and ate together... and he said to me: "Woe betide you if you tried to steal their steak!".
This little story supports this man's position about vegetarians/vegans, because (most of) these people haven't seen (or better, haven't lived) hunger and misery, and they don't appreciate all what nature offers. And they often claim to be better than you. You filthy killer!
I know, some don't eat meat because eating meat isn't healthy, some don't because they don't want animals to be killed.
To the first ones I say: I know, eating too much meat is not healthy at all. But what is healthy nowadays? You can be sure only about what you produce yourself, but not everybody can do that. I think it's more healthy to eat (only a couple) slices of lard or salame that my friend produces with his pigs, than eating some "healthy" salad coming from who-knows-where and grown who-knows-how.
To the second ones I say: there are plenty of predators among animals. They kill other animals to live. Aren't they murderers just as we are? Oh, well, maybe because tigers and lions, hawks and eagles, whales and dolphins are sooo cute. They kill just as we do. It's not right or wrong. It's just fine as it is, as long as we (all "predators") don't kill and eat our own species, and as long as we treat animals well and don't make them suffer when we kill them.
I believe everybody has the right to eat whatever he wants. I don't have a problem with vegetarians, as long as they don't come and teach me what I should and should not eat.
Sorry for the wall of text :P

That's a nice story, but it doesn't apply. No reasonable vegan is ever going to tell a hermit from a third world country who's going hungry that he's not allowed to eat his chickens. Veganism is about avoiding animal products as far as possible and applicable. Lions need to eat meat to survive. A first-world person eats meat because it's tasty. It's that simple. Is the consumption of sentient beings for one's own convenience and pleasure rather than necessity ethical? That's up to debate. What I know for certain is that I wish people would stop calling veganism and vegetarianism a trend. Veganism is a philosophy.

Shhhh, don't let him hear you call him 'old'... he will punch you in the head, so when it rains you get a puddle on it XD

Oh I don't really care, but don't say I didn't tell you not to when you'll be hanged in the middle of the town square :P

honestly i have serious issues with your story. An argument that eating a predominantly plant based diet is because of wealth is beyond absurd. You think all the poor places around the world have an abundance of meat sources? The poorest peoples eat very little meat because its cheaper to eat plants. India is 40% vegetarian. I guess thats just because its such a super wealthy country, right?
Additionally, no one plans out a 90day intensive journey where they require a special diet without making sure they will have actual food to eat on the trip.
Furthermore, even if your story were true, it doesnt support, not in the least, the idea that plant based diets are related to wealth. All you have done is starve two people into eating meat.

The point was that if the country becomes wealthy, more imported products are available and you have a wider choice. When your country is poor, you eat what you have at disposal. In India they are more than a billion, so they eat plants because maybe they don't have enough animals and vegetarianism is not a choice for many. Instead, if you live in a mountain zone with plenty of woods, you're more likely to eat hunted animals.
For the journey thing, those were two stupid people who didn't tell the others about their diet, and one of them was a medic! So dumb... Nowadays, instrad, it would be the first thing they say, even before you asked them ;D

Yes I also think they were quite new to vegetarianism. But about seriousness, in that situation it would have been a matter of life or death after a while, I suppose...

90% vegan whatever you want to call it, but would never eat meat again yuck

Grilled steak, grilled chicken, grilled hotdogs; cold drinks, and some sport on TV on a Saturday summer afternoon is the dream baby! (No winter sports though, it's a contradiction to the summer feel.)

I'm not - I like to cook and eat everything. I find "not eating meat because animals are being killed for that" a poor reason, but I don't care about what others do. I had a vegetarian friend - once, after playing football, he invited us over and fed us with some crappy soup and salad of different and un-tasty leaves praising them how they are better than meat. A few weeks later he did the same, and after that I pretty much avoided him...

Kinda of shitty reason to avoid your friend but am going to have to agree with how vegan food sucks. How can they live on that?

You obviously haven't tried the world's easiest and most delicious chocolate pie!
Unless you dislike chocolate or pie. In that case, you're beyond my understanding. :(

Genuine question here, most people who go without meat or meat and fish seem to do just fine. But what about the other way round? Is there a name for people that just eat meat and no vegetables? How do they do? The ones not murdered by the vegans and vegetarians
See. You always see people questioning the moral choice of eating meat, and complaining about how the animals are kept and such, but what about the plants?! NO ONE cares for them... /s

I thought of them being called "carnivores" but that doesn't really work... People who don't eat meat aren't called herbivores, are they? That's because I'm pretty sure a carnivore is a species that really can't/shouldn't eat greens and a herbivore is a species that really can't/shouldn't eat meat!
And as for that last part, that may be true, BUT... Um... MEAT TASTES NICER.

"People who don't eat meat aren't called herbivores, are they?"
sometimes we are
"That's because I'm pretty sure a carnivore is a species that really can't/shouldn't eat greens and a herbivore is a species that really can't/shouldn't eat meat!"
Technically I think so, but w/e
"And as for that last part, that may be true, BUT... Um... MEAT TASTES NICER."
That may be true, but our food is usually fresher

Some people call black people the n-word, indian people the p-word or white people the c-word, but that's hardly true, or the correct terminology now, is it? P:
And dude I'm not being serious enough to get in a debate or argument with you. Half of what I originally said was sarcasm, and my point about "MEAT TASTES NICER" is hardly a serious statement. I love me some salad. :3

I'm not vegan, but I'm thinking about going vegan when I move out, since it's easy and cheap if you prepare the food yourselves and I also like it a lot. (I slowly eat less meat and I'm one of those guys that didn't enjoy vegetables and stuff and never wanted to eat anything without meat)
Also reading pathetic "anti-vegan" comments makes me want to be not be as stupid as them.

I would never go vegan but I'm not a hater, I respect those who are. I think I could give up meat some day, but not animal products completely, I like eggs a little too much heh heh.

I actually know of a few vegans who buy ex-battery hens and keep them as pets (they would just be killed for meat when their egg production drops). The hens still lay a lot of eggs, just not as many (considering they usually lay 300+ a year) and those people have no issue eating them as long as it doesn't bother the animals, since it has no impact on the usual supply & demand issue.
(Just sharing! This is hardly viable for everyone, of course.)

Hm, that's interesting. I always thought vegans wouldn't eat any type of animal byproduct, but I suppose there's all sorts of different types of vegans.

"Veganism is a way of living that seeks to exclude, as far as possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing and any other purpose." - The Vegan Society
There's a bit of a gray area when it comes to what's morally acceptable. That's why you get ovo-lacto vegetarians, veggans (vegans who eat backyard hen eggs), pescatarians, vegans who avoid palm oil, etc.

What compujosh says! Also consider that in this case, while buying hens bred for that specific purpose is frowned upon by strict vegans (for every female chick, there's a male chick that has to die), getting ex-battery hens is akin to rescuing them and throwing away perfectly edible food out of principle doesn't benefit the animals. So very few people are against the practice. :}

But this video is kind of right...Just that non-vegans find another source to feel superior to others ^^

I'm a vegetarian. What keeps me from being vegan is that I occasionally eat foods that contain dairy and/or eggs, but I aim to minimize that as much as possible.

1st one made ma laugh, second one: because it's not about the taste of the meat it's the process that uses animals that make svegans not wanna eat it, i never said in my life that i hate the taste of meat, dairy or eggs :P and i don't even get the last joke, doesnt seem to make any sense xD

I believe the third one, like several other pictures in this thread, alludes to the perceived increase in likelihood of vegetarians/vegans informing everyone in their general vicinity that they are, in fact, vegetarian/vegan. Whether it's actually relevant to the situation at hand or not.

First one was funny. Hollywood should pick up on that.
Second pictures: Many of those products are actually made by meat companies to increase their income. Some/Many use egg white or milk derivates to create the spongy texture, so not vegan, at all.
