beeing a webdeveloper myself I find this odd, you really should only have to do 1 database lookup, getting the results and also getting a count of the total results (this can both be done within a single query).

then all you need to do is some math.. given how computers do nothing else this shouldn't really have any performance impact either :/

I really wonder what their internal system looks like that they got 3x the amount of traffic(?)
