2 days ago I was wondering if I should pre-purchase GW2. After a brief research, I'm certain there's going to be a decent number of players but I'm really curious about the claims that WoW has found it's true rival. Will we witness the ending of an era?

Nothing will beat wow there are far too many casual social games out there taking a chunk of the market.

Guild Wars 2 will almost certainly be in the top 5 though.

Guild Wars 2 was not made to beat or compete with World of Warcraft. That's a pretty smart move considering how MMO's that tried exactly that have fallen on their on faces, especially SWTOR. It boils down to what does the consumer prefer: graphic style, payment fees, lore, community, system requirements, pvp style, pve style etc. Personally, I prefer WoW by far. I started playing it in 2006, and I continued playing it on & off, usually I play for one month and then skip one or two. I can't see myself playing GW2 more then a month, maximum. WOW is just to much of a polished game to be replaced by a diamond in a rough, what GW2 seems to be.

No, not likely.
Rift, SWTOR & GW2 were/are the most likely candidates to topple WoW.
Rift failed, very fast, pretty, lots of eye candy, but nowhere near polished enough, and it isn't casual friendly.
SWTOR failed, while it was polished there is no free trial and it isn't casual friendly.
GW2, to be seen, however realistically speaking it won't likely beat WoW either.

It will not "beat" WoW. That's essentially impossible, unless it gradually does a /really/ good job. For like the next five to ten years.

That said, it's still most likely going to thrive, regardless of WoW. Of this I have little doubt.

played WoW for about 2000h
never played GW, nor will start playing GW2
but i looked at some GW2 vids a while ago, its just great, it 'would' kill WoW
just look at it, plus theres no monthly fee, and its just different, not the 'basic' MMO style, like the way SWTOR copied 90% WoW, same gameplay
WoW is an old game, and it will die soon

I have been hearing "it will die soon" for more than 6 years.

Cause they had a big role in the development of Blizzard games (the founders) they sure have the potential.

i think one of the main reasons so many WoW players dont want to move on is that they've invested so much time in it, they dont want to have to start again from scratch

I also believe that GW2 will be a success....people still play gw1 right? It's the difference with the sub fees. I will most likely buy gw2 when it comes out and even if I don't play it every day, I will feel I get value for money, while when playing WoW I feel I HAVE to play every day because I paid for it.

As for killing WoW....I doubt it. I played GW2 in early-ish beta and it wasn't good enough to keep me going. WoW is easy to pick up, easy to play alone or with friends and you get instant rewards with completing quests. Not to mention the nostalgia factor :P I go back to WoW every now and then when I have the extra cash and I know it will keep me entertained for a long time, I know I can solo, I know I will find dungeon groups when I need them and feel like doing them. And yes, I've tried almost all of the previous "WoW beaters" and none of them have been as easy to enjoy and as rewarding to play. And no, I'm no blizz fangurl, I only own WoW :P And no, I'm no WoW fangurl either, I'm just stating my opinion on how the game presses all the right buttons for me.

Guild Wars 2 won't kill WoW, and they can't be compared at all... They have alot differences like random events, skills, NO HOLY TRINITY, ...

Not instantly.

The "NO HOLY TRINITY" is a lie, the truth is "anyone can be either tank, dps or heal"

there can't actually be no tank or healer, sure you can tank by short burts but noone can be a dedicated tank or healer during an entire fight.

Plus the fact that there ain't no standard agro system is actually impossible to effectively tank

GW2 will beat WoW only for PvP player, because the PvE is another lie :

  • "Dynamic" events are only zone quests who repop once done. No actual influence on the world. If you are alone, you can't make them. Or if there is too much people you don't make any difference.

  • Only a very few instance, and no raids (5 players dungeons only)

IMO, the PvE is even worst than SWTOR. Incredible huh ?

But : PvP World vs World is mega epic
Battlegrounds are also well well done.

It DOES have an influence actually.

I was playing it and when a zone was taken control of by centaurs I couldn't warp to it.
For example if a zone is taken you can take it back - repair it etc.

While it may not be exactly what it's hyped up to be, that was one feature I was pretty happy about.

The only thing that is going to kill WoW, is WoW.

I still ask myself if no one is able to develop a game which is better than WoW.
GW2 will not beat World of Warcraft entirely.
