This is an update, totally not a bump ... totally.

Now we have have people with no games what so ever spamming the steamgifts group page begging for invites.

I guess I'm going to be the dissenting voice here. First, yes. Closing the group would clean up the group chat. Nobody could come in to ask about invites. That said, where better to allow people to prove themselves than there in the chat where they can interact with us? Beggars are annoying, to be sure. I have no objections to seeing them tossed on their ears. But someone awesome, that may not already be friends with a member? Maybe they just want to come hang out with us until someone wants to invite them. That was my intent when I first joined the group. To come and get to know people and see how it was done.
Next, to respond to the earlier suggestion of splitting into two groups. An established group and a proving ground. It sounds lovely in theory. Except for two immediate problems. Who would be moderating it, and who among the "elite" crowd is going to deign to hang out in the "pit" The worthwhile people will see it as a begging ground and leave. And the beggars still get nothing. All this does is damage our reputation as a community when that begging ground becomes the public face.
So, for this idea I'm in favor of leaving things the way they are, and at most hiring another mod or two for the chat, to take care of trouble before it becomes so troublesome.

You would do that in the existing group, as you can now. It's not so very hard to look over the list for the people you wish to speak to, and the block function works beautifully for dealing with the more annoying beggars when there is a lack of a mod present.

Do it ! Atleast Cult and CG won't have anymore problems to take care of beggers and spammers and the chat will go "No tards allowed" :D

Only because it currently useless due to everyman and his dog joining and spamming for free games.
I wouldn't mind being able to start up a few games with the generious people who are giving away games on this site. Not to mention games outside of steam, I wouldn't mind getting a few games of freeciv or Empire Earth going with this trusted community.

Right now the Steamgifts steam group is public, which is nice and all. The problem being that it's just being spammed with people begging for invites.
Perhaps the group should go private and all members of/joining steamgifts.com be invited. It would allow the group to be acutally used by people who have decent things to say instead of idiots spamming it all day long.
Thoughts, comments, death threats?
