Aside from really being happy about it, do you guys believe it will raise your chance or luck or something?

Just common courtesy. I'm sorry that this should have to be explained.

And some of us are not wordsmiths, so wasting time at work to write something remotely decent is not luxury we can afford.

+1. Sad world where people now wonder why saying thanks is such a strange thing. We are not all bot or script. I was raised to say thanks when someone offer me something freely. That's the least i can do.

It's an even sadder world when people Blacklist you for saying thanks.

Yep, you see some giveaways where people say in the description that they'll blacklist anyone that just says thanks, or something else like that in the comments.

But there are also people who blacklist others for NOT saying thanks. That is a little bit more reasonable.

Don't think I've seen that, but some people just seem to be looking for an excuse to fill up their blacklist.

Such things remind me of when I played the first Lineage game years back, that was likely the game that coined the term "Asian grinder" for online games. So there I am, grinding XP as best I can, then some self righteous prick comes along, and asks if I'm a bot. I ignore him/her as I can't be bothered to respond to such things as I'm busy grinding, then he/she attacks me with his/her much higher level char because based on his/her flawed test, if someone doesn't stop to respond, that must mean they are a bot. The game had a process to go through to report a suspected bot, so those with the means to far more accurately make that determination, and the authority to act on it, can do so, yet some just figure they want to police the matter themselves.

It's the same here, the rules even state we aren't supposed to act on things ourselves, but to make a support ticket. Then there's also a rule about how those making a giveaway can't set various added requirements for people to be eligible, which that sort of nonsense is in a sense doing. Now because of people that do crap like that, I'm too paranoid to say thanks, when I'm thankful to someone, even though when I read the guidelines for the site when I first joined, I remembered it advising people to thank, and comment in at least some of the giveaways you enter.

Ive been blacklisted from certain people's giveaways because I always said thanks, which of course meant I run a script. Ive since stopped commenting in giveaways unless the description says to say something. I dont enter that many giveaways anyway, but I just find it stupid.

You make it sound as if this is a matter of common courtesy, as if we must lament the loss of the humbleness of time's past and scorn the rise of selfish individualism.

selfish egocentrism*

Fixed it for you.

And yes, it is sad that good manners are now the exception rather than the rule.

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, egocentrism. I'm tired.

Damning the kids and their newfangled technologies aside, I honestly don't see this as a matter of manners. This is a giveaway site, where the entire process is depersonalized and automated anyway. They're being compensated with CV and levels. Don't get me wrong, I do show my gratitude, just not with "thanks". I show my gratitude if I win by thanking them and telling them I appreciate their gift. I show my appreciation by responding on their giveaways when they pose a question in their description, or participating in the discussion topic they pose. Simply pasting the same response, either in wording or in meaning, isn't really accomplishing much. In my opinion, it's more meaningful that way.

But at this point, I'm just reiterating what I've said before. I even made a thread about this before, too. No need to continue beating a dead horse.

this... I mean... it's not really that hard to spend 5s to thanks a free chance to win a free game right? I almost always ask for people to "comment in order to win" (ye ye... I know that sadly aren't any rules with this) and it's sad to see 1000 entries and 100 comments. At least I take the time to read most of them and add them to a white list for better raffles.

Well people like to let the person who made the giveaway know that they appreciate it. What better way to do it then say thanks :3 - though sometimes in my giveaways I try to tell people not to say thanks. It doesn't really mean anything to me if the person is just using a clicking bot and can't even be bothered reading the description.

I try to find a nice sentence thats suitable for the giveaway and maybe a picture, cause i respect the creator of a giveaway...
(honestly sometimes i do not comment , cause busy with other things....have no idea what i should write and a simple ty...is not worht to fill the inbox of the creator ( meanwhile many ask not to write "thanks" )) on the other hand, i only enter giveaways for games that i really want or that i´m at least think i would try.....so most time there is a 300P on the corner.

  1. Show gratitude
  2. Manner / common courtesy
  3. Avoid getting blacklisted, such script also exists
  4. Falsely belief that it improves chances, or winner is picked by creator
  5. Just to leave a comment but have nothing else to say

I think most fall under 5.

I think most fall under 1 and 2.

  1. If you use a script to do that automatically, or if you join and thank the creator without reading description and other comments or even knowing what you joined (as in just for the sake of spending points), I would consider that you fall under item 5. I have deduced that many messages fall under those categories, scripted or thanking blindly. Some people also leave the same exact message on each giveaway from the same creator that he joined at the same time, so the duplicates would fall under item 5 as well.
  2. I believe in most culture, you don't stay silent if someone says thanks to you. In return you would say "You're welcome", "My pleasure" and etc. On here though, only a handful do that, and even less who reply to each comment. If you have been leaving "thank you" messages on every giveaway you join, then it shouldn't be a hassle for you to reply at least once with a "you're welcome" message in your own giveaways.

Edit: Oh, just saw a "ty" message from a user who gave away many many free keys from Playfire and IndieGala. He is not grateful either.

  1. I don't use any scripts but even if I would it still means I'm grateful. You don't even have to use a script but if you choose to it still means you're greateful. You just don't want to spend half a day writing "thank you" in every giveaway you enter. That's how I see it. I don't mind seeing scripted "thank you's". But I wouldn't do it myself.

  2. That's ridiculous IMO. Saying "you're welcome" under every "thanks" is just pure spam. I'd never do that.

About your edit - you don't know that, you can't know that. You're just assuming things.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Honestly, I think, those automated scripts that just add a "thank you" comment to every entry don't have anything to do with gratitude, they're just spam. In my humble opinion, if someone doesn't have anything more to say, they should express their gratitude by just being silent, which is perfectly okay, because when entering a lot of giveaways, you just can't come up with something witty or personal all the time. I am aware that this is just my own personal opinion. So, when I create a giveaway I usually ask people to refrain adding those comments. Sadly, there's usually a lot of them who just don't care (most likely automated scripts).

Permalink

Yes, we can only think and assume.

  1. Even if you don't say it out, it doesn't mean that you is ungrateful either. When you use an automated way to paste the same message in every giveaway, IMO they became pure spam as well.
  2. I didn't say it's necessary to reply to every comment, just that many do not at all, that's not being polite when we're talking about mannerism, which is why I disagree that's what these thanking messages are about. That's said, I won't feel offended, and I rarely do that myself.

What I mean by that is, he gave away so many keys gained through exploit and also not following the rules for his own gain (CV). If he is truly grateful, this is not something that he would be doing to repay the kindness. People have told him even if he didn't read the guidelines, so he is just greedy.

What has happened to this world that good manners are seen as an irritation or spam?

I used to say thank you on every giveaway. I don't anymore, not that I'm not grateful, but there are many users who simply blacklist everyone who bothers to say thank you. You can't win :(

People say thanks mostly to reciprocate the emotions they feel towards you for giving them a chance at a free game. And I doubt no ones crazy enough to think it ups their chances.
