What follows is my personal opinion feel free to explain yours:

I for once think that some kind of addiction can occur for certain people. Not an addiction like smoking or driking but rather like eating chocolate I'd say.
I personally hate the fact that sometimes I can spend hours behind the computer screen and afterwards it feels like I wasted my time. I especially can spend a lot of time gaming when I play multiplayers games with friends and we are of Skype for example.

For myself gaming is affiliated with the lazier option, sometimes I'll have night out with some friends I'll cancel coz I feel too tired then I'll end up gaming :(

What about you how do you feel about gaming ? Do you think you can get addicted ?

Not in any real sense; maybe in a, my fiancee laughs at how I spend my free time kind of way, as it is a hobby I enjoy immensely, but I make sure to spend time doing other things. I can't speak for some of my friends though. :D

Well, I've lost my girlfriend when I was younger due to games :D I would rather play a game than meet with her, but she was just a little overly attached girlfriend so it's not 100% gaming fault :3

Comment has been collapsed.

I never understand how people have a problem with this. If a friend calls me while I'm ingame and says do I want to meet up, I continue playing, sure, but while I'm playing I organise meeting up with them. If it's "immediately", then I just turn off the game where it is, and leave. I'd never refuse meeting up with a friend because I wanted to play a game instead.

Have you ever played competitive multiplayer games ? For instance SC2, CS all MOBA if you leave not only do you loose but you also let your whole team down.

But I wouldn't start that unless I knew I had the next 3 hours (or whatever) free. Why would you start it if you didn't know what you had organised for the next few hours?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, I suppose you have some really nice planning skills then. ))
I was talking about those cases where you just receive a call from friends without a warning, like "let's hang out, meeting up in half an hour", the "say I'll be in ten minutes and finish the match" tactics won't work here if we're talking about raids. With my friends, this is the usual case - we just randomly decide to meet up and do it, the friend who is over attached to his guild in wow is missing out on all the meetings.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

This happens to me too, but I wouldn't say that in that case my social life has suffered at the expense of gaming, it's only if it happens regularly, and when you organise raids, or any other event, instead of organising to meet up with friends, rather than organising raids because you have a free time slot.

Of course you can get addicted to video games - the most popular example (as in "you hear about people being addicted to this game in the media") would probably be World of Warcraft.

Edit: clicky

That clicky is so usefull thank you ;) I really wanted the opinion of the media and not the one of fellow gamers :)

This thread is so useful, thank you, too =)

Gaming addiction is not a matter of opinions, it's a fact that you can get addicted and it's a "recognized disease" (I didn't find a better translation of "anerkannte Krankheit").

Q: Do I think someone can get addicted to X?
A: Yes, if they enjoy doing X, they have a potential to get addicted to it.

Do I think that you should back up facts with links? Yes, I sure as heck do, that's why I added the link, backing up fact helps people to distinguish between facts and made up non-sense or opinions.

Once again sorry for not being clear enough in the thread, in my country at least gaming hasn't been acknowlegded as an addiction yet hence why the thread. And I believed your link is " Can't you use Google ? Is it too hard ?". And I think that most people at least on this forum have a clear view of their gaming habits maybe more than doctors who never played games.Again this is just my opinion.

Comment has been collapsed.

Maybe we got off on the wrong foot about this ;)

And no, I didn't try to suggest that you or anyone else can't use google, I really only wanted to back up my example. Plus it was more convenient for me to use "lmgtfy" instead of a direct google query, that would have looked like
https://www.google.com/search?client=my_browser&rls=my_country&q=world+of+warcraft+addiction&sourceid=_my_browser&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&channel=suggest
(unless I manually removed all the unneccesary params).

I wouldn't actually trust media on gaming topic. Yes, lots of things they state are true, but it's rather bold to say that "it's a fact because it's on the media". Just yesterdays I saw a TV program where some mom, an old historian and some totally biassed journalist were discussing the impact of video games on the perception of historical events. If only you could hear the nonsense they were spouting out back there, some pretty ridiculous stuff like "the games are justifying Hitler's actions".

My opinion on the topic: yes, yes you can be addicted to games. My friend got so hooked up on WoW that he has quit the studies (he studied to become a doctor), ignored us (his friends) for about a year and now is about to lose his job, and as a real addict he keeps saying that everything is under control and soon he'll find a new job; it's all going just as planned.

There is physical addiction; spicy food, drugs, alcohol, chocolate and such. That releases certain chemicals that satisfies your body.

And there is mental addiction; certain activities like hobbies(even collecting), video games, social interaction, competition and such, that triggers your reward system.

Some people might even lose their socializations skills, get aggressive and stop having any interest in real life until it start impeding playing more games.

No. If my gear breaks, I don't go begging or stealing for new parts, like a drug addict. I simply wait for some paychecks while finding other forms of entertainment or carrying on with my (other) hobbies and pastimes. If I'm on vacation for more than a week, I don't go into withdrawal lol

I find other people physically more agitated when they don't get their daily info on what a workmate had for breakfast, or what that friend did to that other friend, or what time did a neighbor come home last night, or who owns the new car in the parking lot. OR when they can't control their loved ones :)

Yes, very easily. As much as we hate to admit it and as much as we like to justify it (i.e. "if you like the time you spend playing games, it's not wasted and you're not addicted), truth is we can become very easily addicted and, in fact, many of us are addicted but we won't admit it. I'll be the first one to say, I've tried many times to quit gaming because I have a feeling that more time I spend playing games, more time I waste. Yes, I do enjoy myself but I feel I can use that time to be more productive or creative on some other level. However, I find it incredibly difficult to stop gaming. I've tried several times and, unfortunately, every time I came back to gaming (longest I was without even starting a game was about 4 months cca. 16 months ago). The biggest problem is the procrastination that often follows gaming. I either spend countless hours playing games or I spend few hours playing games and then I spend couple of hours laying around and watching TV because, for God's sake, I got tired after playing games.
So to say it in a short answer - yes, people can and people are addicted to gaming. I'll be the first one to admit it. I'm planning on "retiring" for who knows what time in October since the hardest year on Uni starts and I'd like to dedicate what little time I'll have to writing and workout and stuff. Whether I'll succeed remains to be seen.

Most of my gamer friends have difficulty to balance between MMO grinding and attending lectures. It is an addiction. I've tried convincing them to play something else less grinding to treat the addiction but they returned back to MMOs.

MMOs fall under special category of addictive gaming. I mean, achievements and SP are addictive but they're nothing compared to MMO. Not only do you get to do one and the same thing over and over again (thus settling for some sort of pattern which eats up a lot of your time but doesn't feel like it) but you also get caught up into multi part of MMOs and you're basically screwed (raids, friend boosts etc.).

It's certainly an addiction and may drive people, especially teenagers into solitude and isolation. An addicted person would spend their time playing games rather than hanging out with their friends or improving themselves. But as the person grows older life may intervene and the addiction may become less effective in their lives or they may end up in the basement of their parents.
