Has anybody seen this? Upgrade from XP thru 7 to Win8 Pro for $40]. Deal or dud? I ran the upgrade assistant and found a few games (Morrowind, Fallout III) and programs (comodo, DEAMON tools) apparently will no longer work. I never ran the beta but have been seeing that win8 is supposed to be a crowning achievement for M$. I'm currently running win7 ult but have been having some issues with it crying that I'm out of memory even when it tells me there is 4 gb free. Anyway.. is win8 that much better? Buy it at $40 and hold off for about a year till M$ gets a bunch of bugs and exploits taken care of?

You don't need to be a Jobs fan or an *nix user to despise Win 8.

The only box I have on Win 7 is one that has hardware which isn't supported on XP. Win 7 still has many of the same problems that Vista had (such as the inability to actually kill a task that is in a logic loop but still responds to the OS, or useful features removed in Vista that were present since Win 95 such as being able to put the IE Links toolbar in Windows Explorer and use Favorites for quick navigation to folders on the local HDD).

So people who like those expensive extras, should upgrade to 8 instead to 7? I guess the answer is no.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

OK no need to get snippy. You asked why someone should upgrade from xp to win8. It was a very well documented fact XP's usage of read/writes to the storage media will shorten the life of SSD media. Also those "expensive" extras are becoming pretty common place in PCs, like it or not. The first laptop I played with as a kid of the 80's had NO internal storage at all. HDDs were about 4x's the size they are today and you were giggling all over yourself if you had 25 MB.
Look at this image of Newegg from Apr. 18 2001 Western Digital 40GB 7200RPM EIDE Ultra 100 3.5" model 400BB - OEM VERSION - $127 thats a price per GB of $3.18!

As for "expensive extras"... SMH

Currently prices are: HDD $.07 per GB SSD $.69 per GB

Based on SAMSUNG EcoGreen F4 ST2000DL004 2TB SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive Price: $129.99
Mushkin Enhanced Chronos MKNSSDCR240GB 2.5" 240GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) Price: $164.99
Prices listed as of Oct. 26 2012 on http://gb4less.com/

According to the cost comparisons we are actually reaching the end of cost effective platter based storage. If Western Digital and Seagate were the one's not making the expensive extras we should be paying only $10 per terabyte. Moore's Law

AND just an FYI win7 isn't currently offered on any sale basis. Drop the attitude. It isn't necessary. I"m not by any means a fan of the evil empire, however; I'm trying to make sense of the data. I'd rather play it safe and give my family legit software when they have to let their employer tool around in the box for proprietary software installs. $40 for an advance OS that looks like what about 90% of the world uses, or spend countless hours fielding phone calls from a mother-in-law who will tell me the computer doesn't work because she can't find M$ Office... because Open Office 'doesn't work either' in kubuntu. No.... I'll pass on that thanks.

I've used Vista for several years without trouble. Initially it was missing some drivers, but nothing that time and a few hardware upgrades couldn't solve. If you're running it now it's more compatible than XP for modern games, faster for games and provides better rendering (through DX10 and up). I'd never go back to XP.

I recently upgraded to 7, and there's not as big a difference as between XP and Vista.

I think for tablet computers Windows 8 is great but I dislike it for the desktop. As for games not working, you should be able to run them in some sort of compatibility mode (or run them with a program like DOSBox which is something you need to do to play The Elder Scrolls Arena and Daggerfall on Windows 7).

I haven't really used the Windows 8 consumer preview much but from what I've seen it's decent at least, but again, I think it's best for tablet computers.

I love the BSoD though (which I never actually saw while running the consumer preview btw): http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/39/BSoD_in_Windows_8.png

I tried the Preview and I think there isn't much difference between 7 and 8. The new things are the Apps (which are made for touch devices and not much usable with mouse) and the fullscreen "Start menu" which I like better. Almost everything else is mainly the same like Win 7 with some extras. But for 40$ it is a good deal and you should buy it (especially when MS releases Win 8 only software).

Edit: BTW I almost never got any problems with my games (only two of my games didn't work).

  • Boot up: starts very fast compared to Vista and 7

There are small apps in Vista and 7 but you don't have to use them. Same for Win 8. Except the case you want to use IE or the built-in PDF reader, but who would do that :P?
In my opinion, the new Start Menu is better than the old one. A fullscreen program to display every other program on your computer sounds more logical to me than a little popup

You can't put the blame solely on the developers, you can also blame MS for not allowing DirectX 11 to be cross platformed, also various other dynamic libraries that are only on Windows 7, and quite possibly newer on the Windows 8 system that some developer may in the future be forced to use and in turn force the end-user to use.

Also, I'm not sure about the release version but I heard loads of complaints about the beta needing a registry change to switch to the classic desktop. Not really user friendly (again, this could be changed. Don't know and don't really care since I'm not planning to change)

Edit:

They never said games will not work outside the Windows Marketplace. That's just a rumor that's been passed around like the plague. There's no reason why you wouldn't be able to play non-steam games or use the Steam platform, they all work flawlessly. I mean, I have a friend right now playing Borderlands 2 through Steam on his Win 8 machine. He's also used Big Picture mode with only some minor issues that aren't tied to the OS.

That being said, you might be confusing Windows RT with the Windows 8 version that's meant for PCs. The RT OS is meant for ARM devices such as Microsoft's Surface. It's a pre-installed OS that's tied to the marketplace and doesn't allow the user to install desktop applications. It's meant for lower end tablets, that's why it doesn't offer the functionality of the regular OS.

Also, I don't mean to sound like a harsh fan boy, I'm just trying to provide some better information than what's been put up before and has stuck for the most part. As for myself, I'm on the fence whether I should buy it or not.

It's not a matter of being cracked - all recent Windows versions, including 8, got cracked and shared before release.

From what I've seen and heard of Windows 8 I think it's clear it's going to be a bigger flop than Vista. It's just fucking terrible and anyone who was even remotely involved in the development process should consider ritual self-castration.

Windows 8 getting Green-lit shows a complete lack of understanding about their core demographic. Trying to play catch-up to the mobile/tablet demographic which is already completely entrenched in other providers and alienating your core users is just commercial suicide.

No, people aren't saying it's bad because of predictions. People have already been using it (I have a couple of friends who got to test it) and it's literally just Windows 7, but with an interface based off of a tablet/smartphone. The whole system is designed around tablets and smartphones and as such it's a format that would work with touch screen, but it's just horrendous to navigate with a mouse. Now, which are you more likely to have for your PC: a mouse or a touch screen?

i'm going with this guy. i used the preview, and i would say, it's amazing, IF you have a touchscreen PC. if not, you're shit out of luck, and it's not worth it. Plus the marketplace was almost empty (probably improved since release)

But all in all, unless you have/intend to upgrade to a touchscreen, and think you'll eventually buy a legit version of Win8. then i would avoid it.

I have no intent to buy touchscreen, But still like Windows 8 and use a Desktop with Mouse and Keyboard). It takes a whole, What, 1 hour to get used to it?

The only reason I currently still use windows 7 is because I don't have the money to buy Windows 8 (and hence, don't want to put it on my SSD for the speed boost), But in the few hours I used it, I'm already completely used to it. It doesn't take a genius.

Now, I'm not saying its perfect, I find some of the backend things BS, But its not as bad as everyone is making it out to be.
