Has anybody seen this? Upgrade from XP thru 7 to Win8 Pro for $40]. Deal or dud? I ran the upgrade assistant and found a few games (Morrowind, Fallout III) and programs (comodo, DEAMON tools) apparently will no longer work. I never ran the beta but have been seeing that win8 is supposed to be a crowning achievement for M$. I'm currently running win7 ult but have been having some issues with it crying that I'm out of memory even when it tells me there is 4 gb free. Anyway.. is win8 that much better? Buy it at $40 and hold off for about a year till M$ gets a bunch of bugs and exploits taken care of?

Isn't win8 a mere step to try to get bigger mobile market by similitude? (45-65 years old target)

I got offered to upgrade it for 20 NZD, but I doubt I'll ever be using a tablet in the next few years so I passed on the offer. Seven works fine and is a lot better than vista.

This thread looks pretty familar. I remember the same cheap opinions when the previous versions of windows were released, mostly coming from people who are not able to adapt to positive changes nor understand them

I have no problem adapting to positive change, it's the negative one I have trouble with.

There are a few things that i like about windows 8 but i don't see a reason to upgrade/downgrade to windows 8.

i would think about it very hard before you upgrade to windows 8, personally i wouldn't even upgrade to 8 for free, from what I've seen and heard it is a failure.

Microsoft have made an os the is more limited than windows 7 just so they can monetize it further. Windows is meant to be a fairly open platform in a few generations I fear it will be the complete opposite.
sad but true

I'm using it right now, and I can't tell what they took awayin terms of openness. You literally have the same desktop and can install whatever you like, with the caveat that if you want simple 1-click installation via MS, they control what's for sale/download.

So I just went to Steam's site and downloaded the normal installer, which worked identically to Windows 7 or XP. People are just making a big deal because of misinformation.

Gabe was pissed at Windows 8 because it poses a threat to his bottom line. That's it. He runs a business and is a greedy fuck like everyone else, and he wants your money to go to him, not to MS. So if MS opens a competing game service, he might lose sales. Big whoop...

yes you can get a similar desktop to 7, but things can get rather messy quickly when switching back and forth been the desktop and metro applications ect.

have you tried using the task manager? alot things like cpu activity and processes are gone, the start menu which is something i use frequently everyday is also pretty crappy for anyone not using a touchscreen/controller as it is so
minimilistic that it works against itself,

things like the original control panel can be accessed but I shouldnt have to go through 3 or 4 extra steps just to reach it, there is no reason for microsoft to unify the phone tablet and desktop os, even apple keeps osx and ios seperate.

it has potentional, i wouldnt mind having some of the new feaures but overall as an experience its not ideal for me and alot of other people I know.

Actually, you can still access the full functionality of the Task Manager, it's just not very obvious for everyone. There's some button like "More Options" or "Advanced Options" at the bottom of Task Manager. Click that and you get everything (and more) back.

I do have to agree that shit can get quite messy fast using both Metro and the desktop. Not to mention if you open the same program in both Metro and desktop it creates two seperate instances...

Click "More Details" on the task manager and you get all the same details plus more, in a much better layout. Adn yeah, Metro can get messy if you use Metro apps, but I'm just using it as a start menu. And it's a lot faster to find programs since the icons are a lot bigger, so I don't mind.

not sure if the crappy interface is something that you can change or not (i'm using seve rigth now), if not, and you just can use that interface for tablets in your desktop, hell no. if you can change it, and use a normal interface, then yes, go for it.

I'll just copy/paste the shit I said in the other thread.

Contrary to popular belief, Windows 8 is actually better than Windows 7 at every area. Sure, it might have a dumbed down UI (which I actually rather like), but it's optional to use. Everything will the same as on Windows 7. You'll be able to play your games just as easy as you would on 7. If you shit money, why not. If you don't, you can always pirate it, I guess.

You say it's optional to use, so you mean it can be turned off, right? /sarcasm

Since it can't even be turned off, it can hardly be called an optional feature.

Can be turned off (not officially supported).

Permalink

Which is terrible that it isn't even officially supported. But even worse is, even with third party software it can't be 100% turned off, and god knows why Microsoft decided to "fix" the registry hack to get rid of it.

Theres a modded explorer.exe floating around on the internet that will turn it off 100%.

How exactly does M$ prevent registry changes that you specifically allow? I mean if thats the process its kind of cool because it should prevent a lot of security holes since the system should have protected keys that although they get modified, the system refuses the saved value and forces system specifics.

Of course I could just be talking out my ass. I haven't looked into what M$ did at all.

So using 8 kills most of the games I love to play? Sticking with 7 then. And what about that feature 8 was going to have about running Xbox 360 games? Did they drop that feature?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

1st question: No, it doesn't. Normally the only problem you might encounter is the protection system failing to work and requiring an update.
2nd question: Um... Well... You actually can run Xbox 360 games with Windows 8. They only forgot to mention you'll need an Xbox 360 for that. :P Just install Xbox Smart Glass app, set up wireless with your Xbox 360, pick a game from Xbox Marketplace in Windows 8 and click "Play it on Xbox 360". Congrats, you just ran an Xbox 360 game with Windows 8! Alternatively, pick a game from Windows Store that was ported from XBLA, install it and run. Voila, another Xbox 360 game ran on Windows 8! Pure magic.

Loved the hell out of 2000. Was way better than 98, ME, or NT. Got it way back when I was in school as an enterprise edition and used it for years even after school sent me XP.

Windows 2000 Pro was the first Windows I bought. That's discounting the "Windows 97" I bought when work sent me to Singapore, which I knew was pirated, and I used alongside OS/2 Warp until I bought Windows 2000.

It was a really good OS, a professional grade one (compared to the Win95 stable) that was also decent for gaming. Sure it had some game compatibility problems (what Windows didn't?) but it was worth it.

a) I never said it was proof. I said it was a trend.
b) As the guy below said, Win 2000 was targeted towards the server market. I hardly know anyone that used it as a workstation.

I'm will probably end up buying it but not using it for now. I just recently moved from Vista to 7 and I don't feel the need to switch, but $40 is a good deal and there are enough underlying improvements in 8 that I think it will be a decent choice in the long run.
