I guess most of the games I own I had non-official copies before. The thing is, if I enjoy the game enough I want to have it, even if I don't think I'll play it again.

Me too, I even bought games I won't play again (like Witcher 1) because I enjoyed them a lot.

Earlier ones...not so much "pirated" as played copies shared with me by friends...but I suppose the distinction is blurry:
Monkey Island (for Amiga, I also bought the original games and the later incarnations in the past few years for PC), Doom, Doom II, Deluxe Paint 3, Blues Brothers, Leisure Suit Larry, Quake 3, Unreal, Tony Hawks Pro Skater on PS (also recently bought the HD version for PC when it came out on Steam).

Lost count, but those are the standouts.

The list is too long to recall. My previous laptop was one of the most unpredictable things. I could surpass requirements and not be able to run a game, or be far under them and play just fine. And don't bullshit me with those hardware sites. I can give a large list of games it incorrectly told me I could/couldn't run. I bought something because it said I exceeded the recommended requirements, and it wouldn't even launch. Plus, it later starting incorrectly identifying my hardware.

If something did run, I bought it. If not, well what am I going to do with that useless copy anyway?

It's not a problem with my new laptop at least. Everything runs, so I can just chuck my money at the devs without worry.

edit: I forgot about console games. I used to emulate them until I could get a legit copy of the game somewhere. I also emulated Kingdom Hearts and some other games before I got a PS2 with them. ._.

I'm including only PC games, the ones that I remember:

  • Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge (bought remake)
  • Samorost 2
  • Uplink (got in a Humble Bundle)
  • The Walking Dead (this one just for try how it was on my PC, actually never really played it)
  • Legacy of Kain: Defiance
  • GTA: San Andreas (was not really interested, must play it seriously now)
  • Plants vs Zombies
  • VVVVVV

Plan to buy asap:

  • Dungeon Keeper

Do not plan to buy:

  • Terraria (good game, but I tried it and I'm not interested in something like that for now, Minecraft is enough)

How do you pirate a multiplayer-only game to test it? Games like Killing Floor and CS:S would be stupid to pirate, since A) the stats and player reviews are a clear indication as to how good they are, and B) THEY'RE FUCKING MULTIPLAYER ONLY.
Playing with bots, or worse, solo, isn't going to show you anything about the game.

Sure, you can play on cracked servers, but for 90% of multiplayer games, that involves wasting a massive amount of effort finding such servers, installing external software, or playing over vLAN, which are all terrible options.

I did this with Fallout 3, Portal, Portal 2, Torchlight, and probably some others I can't think of at the moment. I don't often pirate, and when I do, I usually know in the first hour if the game sucks or not. XD

If it does, it all gets deleted... nod No point in holding on to a game I don't like.

None. I pirated a game I already owned once, to see if the reason I couldn't play was system or DRM related (pirated version worked, legit version didn't - go figure).

I will never pirate a game to avoid paying for it, because I can afford to buy whatever I want to, and most games come with a demo/beta to try first. Plus games are a reasonable price for what you get out of them.

Films on the other hand... you pay more than the price of a brand new game to go to the cinema these days, and it's over in 2hrs... 3hrs if you count the amount of adverts you must watch first. Again, DVD's are reasonably priced so I will usually buy what I really want - I don't like how much space DVD boxes take up though, so usually pirate more than I buy with films.

Care to back that one up? It costs <=$15 to see a new movie, $90 to buy a new game here.

I'm in the UK, costs £11-£20 for two (£5.50-£10 each) (I'm in a relationship) to see a new film - and that is standard, not premier seating or 3D, that shit costs extra, plus travel from where we are - about £5 bus/£10 taxi/£5 car (inc parking), then set aside £10 for food and drink (£3.95 for one drink here/smallest popcorn is about £4/bag of sweets is £2.99 - and no, you can't take your own, all bags are checked).

Source: Odeon - only confirms ticket prices, you'll have to take my word on the cost of food and drink.

Meanwhile a new Steam game costs £29.99, or you can maybe get GMG discounts if you play your cards right. Borderlands 2 was £22 for me, for example.

Edit: Sorry that you live in a country where Steam is buttfucking you, I feel for you :)

I don't mind them checking the bags, went to see Snow White and the Huntsman a while back (don't take the piss, I was trying to be a nice boyfriend) and the large woman in front of us was trying to sneak proper food in... I mean tubs of chilli and stuff. I'd rather pay a little more for my popcorn than have the screen stunk out :P

Nothing wrong with Snow White and the Huntsman........................................lmfao!

Woah, tubs of chilli? What is this a picnic? The funny thing is, there's a drinks machine right outside the screens where you can buy the same drinks for 1/3 of the price. So that's where I stop by lol. I've actually gone off popcorn all thanks to the prices. Whenever I see someone buying something ridiculous like a hot dog or those nacho chips, I'm always quietly chuckling away :P

I don't know which games you play but what I can say that none of the games in your screenshots (5 games) have demos available.

At the end of the day, he can always read reviews and see general feedback for a game before making the decision to buy it. A demo is just an "extra" way of influencing that decision.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Written reviews hardly provide the feedback you need to decide if you are going to get your money's worth out of a game. A demo is a more accurate way of getting a general feel for the game than a review.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well of course a demo is a more accurate way of learning about the game :P But my point is reviews and gameplay videos can still give you significant insight and there will always be reviews available unlike demos.

Agreed. You only need to check the comments on Steams' Greenlight to see how much a gameplay video can change peoples decisions.

I didn't even realise I had any public screenshots :P

Torchlight 2 is my next purchase - has a demo.
XCOM I thought I wanted to play - has a demo.
War of the Roses is on my list - had a beta.
The Secret World - had a beta.

Also have a friend in the business so get some extremely early builds of indie games. Oh and I got to play APB (the original) way before it went to beta.

Edit: Dawn of War: Retribution and Dead Island were two of the five games I had public screenshots of, both had betas :)

All games have betas, few games have open betas, the fact that you and some other people can get into closed betas doesn't change anything. Games with open betas and/or demos still remain the minority.

You've argued yourself out of your argument, how the fuck did you do that?

Look, when I post on a forum, I post my opinions and findings. So my wording may raise a few eyebrows, but the bottom line is I - personally - have only ever bought the odd game that I hadn't played in some way already.

Maybe you're right, I should have worded it differently, I should have said "and most games I wanted to play had a demo/beta for me to try first" but instead of trying to drag me into some kind of argument with you (which is what it seemed like for a while there, before you bitch-slapped yourself to oblivion), maybe you could have asked me to back it up like adamofgreyskull did, eh? ;)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

There is nothing you can say to back that claim up, fact is most games do not come with a demo or a beta to try the game before buying it. And even if all games have betas, the aim of closed betas is not to try the game before buying it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

And I admitted I should have been more to the point and worded it better, PERSONALLY I have only encountered the odd game that I really wanted to play and couldn't through some legit means.
