Well thing is, I wanna know what you guys think of comments, if you have a large number of them does that make you a spammer or a good member of the forum? does comments > entries mean that you are a good member. I do see people spamming to get their comments up, but why?, not like there is a comment contributor giveaways, does it bring you good rep or bad rep

The whole comments > giveaways is supposed to be a way to tell if you say thanks every time you enter. As long as you are not spamming I would say the more comments the better.

I think that's a kinda bizarre convention. Mindlessly typing "ty" upon entering doesn't really show any real gratitude, especially when you've done it thousands of times and there are hundreds of them on a given giveaway. As long as the winner clearly expresses gratitude to the gifter, which he or she will certainly have an opportunity to do in more eloquent form than a reflexive comment, I think everything is fine. In fact, the tons of comments of simply "ty" or "thanks" makes the comment system kinda useless, because you have to hijack the top post if you have real content in a comment.

This, I used to do it when I first registered, then I realised how pointless it was.

yeah, same here. i used to thank every giveaway i entered first. not doing so anymore. i only comment the giveaways, i'm really-really greatful about (and that's not a simple ty), or when i have something useful to say
I also hate people post mindless thankyous, especially in my own giveaways, where i try to read comments and answer questions.
also i sometimes comment, when the gifter dirrectly asks to thank him in a description... well, if my thanks would make him feel beer, why not. but it definitely does not make me feel better.

And i really hope, there will never be any bonses for having lots of comments,

Hmm I always say thanks or write something, maybe I should ask how the persons day was or post photos of my cats...would they like this? Hmm Hmm...Gotta rethink life.

I agree with this myself but after a few threads on the topic people have made it clear that they feel some effort is better than none.

Yup, I am thankful so why not take 5 secs to say so? May seem pointless to some but I see it differently I guess...

When I give something away, I'd much rather people discuss the game itself or even ask for clarification on whether it's a key, regionally locked, etc. Discussion of the game helps people know if they want it, so more games will go to people that will enjoy them. Discussion of the product delivery helps ensure that rules are followed and winners always get what they expect. That's not currently really possible because of hundreds of one word replies.

But, of course, this is just my personal opinion. If the majority (or the admins) prefer it as-is, that's fine.

I comment because I like to talk, thats really it, I dont think it makes you a great member or anything but I do think its nice to thank people for the giveaways they do of course.

They should put a button that says "Thanks" up. That way all the people saying "TY" and other shortform variations of "thanks" can occupy one space.

People that want to add something in addition to thanks, socialize, talk or whatever could comment regularly.

Just an idea.

I really wish they'd implement this. The thousands of meaningless "ty"s make the comment system useless for actual comments.

Oh, my god, will you morons stop suggesting this? Every fucking week, some fool thinks it's the greatest idea the site will ever hear. The "Thanks" button is the button that takes your points away. Just because you're too lazy to scroll a little doesn't mean that it should be made even less effort for someone to say thank you.

It's not really much of a thank you at all though, which is the point that goes hand and hand. It's sorta a reflexive spam that says "TY".

You don't need 400 shorthand thank you's in comments, it doesn't make any sense.

I guess people keep bringing it up because it makes sense, and automated thank you comments without content don't.

Perhaps your line of reasoning is flawed on this one.

Though, anyone who can't put together a logical argument without ad hominems might see their argument as the greatest insight to mankind.

And a "thank you" button is not really much of a thank you either. It is even less.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I agree that a "thank you" button would not really be much of a genuine thank you. But I still like the idea because it would get rid of the long list of mindless thank you posts while still giving people a way (albeit impersonal) to thank the person giving the gift.

And by thanking in giveaways we are expressing out gratitude.

i used to make a comment contributor giveaway some long time ago. though it was not about quantity of comments, but about quality. i put it in description, the best comment wins another copy of the game given away. after the giveaway has ended i picked like 10 best comments and made a private giveaway among them.
i have no problems people expressing gratitude, but sometimes silence is golden

If the comments are on Giveaways... They should be more than just Thnx / Thanks / Thank-you / Thx etc. We could just have a 'Thanks' button like FB's Like button, people should make more effort in their comments like 'Awesome giveaway, been looking for this game for a while' etc.

If it's comments on the forums, it's not spam unless it's obviously irrelevant to the thread / random keyboard beatings / other spammy things.

I Agree. If I see a nice giveaway, I usually say thank you and good luck even if I don't enter. Some very generous people on this site. I think they deserve to know that we appreciate them. :)

With all the loads of same comments on every giveaway, I don't comment at all. But if I win, I let the contributor know what I feel about winning his giveaway. I think it is much more personal and meaningful.

Most people with a "good" comment>entries ratio are spammers. We all know it's full of them, a quick glance at the forum's topics will show so. Personally I'd rather have a handful of good comments than tons of meaningless ones.

Hence why I don't go thanking every giveaway I enter. I do in some. But not all. Being in either side of it doesn't makes you a good or bad forum member. It's what you do and how that does that. You can be a "spammer" and be a good member same way you can comment on rare occasions and be an ass. You make your own rep yourself.

What ratio would fall into your definition of "good"?

I comment when I have something to say and when it comes to "thanks" in giveaways, I usually thank, I find it polite, even when it takes merely 3 sec. I say "thanks" because I don't like when someone who is here for many months, entered hundreds of giveaways, has less than fifty comments wins my giveaway. I know, more important is whether s/he will and enjoy the game.

Personally I thank the person who is giving away the game personally when I win it. Its pretty pointless thanking him in the giveaway because he won't even see it(Who reads 500-1000 "Thanks/ty/thx" comments anyway?) but I go out of my way every time to say thanks regardless of whether he sees that or not. Its basic gratitude because I mean what I say. However, when I'm not shit tired after a long day I always try to write a proper thank you or actually comment about the giveaway.

As I said, comments:entries ratio is meaningless, it's how useful their posts are what really should be took into account. If you have never seen a person on the forumб but they have 1000+ comments, that maybe a bad sign. True, they could comment on giveaways with something more useful and interesting, than tytyty, but who knows? I wouldn't check all their comments to know for sure. Just pay attention whether you saw that person posting something decent on forums. Use your own judgement for that, as you want to judge them, right? Be it OP's curiousity, private giveaway leader who seeks for new trustful members or simply a person who wants to have some active steamgifts users as their friends.
To put it shortly - 50 useful comments > 1000 thankses. But how said Jade, at least thanking in giveaways is still better than silent entries here and there.

Oh and about thank you button, may it burn in hell, as it's the best place for it. It is nice addition for torrent tracker forums, but not for steamgifts. Ever.
