Two ways as far as I know. One is with punch cards. Those who are subscribed to Big Fish can collect punches by buying games. Buying a non-collector's edition game nets you 1 punch. You get 3 if you purchase a collector's edition game. When you collect 6 punches within the same month you get a code for a free game.
The other way was the way I got mine. I had a problem with a game and sent them a support ticket. They simply sent me a code and apologised. My problem isn't solved since the developer doesn't work on that game anymore but at least I got compensation.
I don't know if there are more ways but Honey browser extension only gives codes for discounts, not free games. At least in my experience.

Of the games I played, I consider Curse of Black Moor Manor Linkto be my favorite. It is old and has dated graphics but it is not like games they make today. Every puzzle makes sense and you can solve even the most difficult ones if you apply a little logic. Best part is it doesn't have hint or auto-solve puzzle. So unless you use pen and paper and really put your mind to it you can't get through, unless of course you use a walkthrough. I really felt like a true detective. Other more recent Nancy Drew games of franchise were too easy and somewhat like modern HOGs which I don't like much.
I am currently playing Tomb of Lost Queen Linkand so far I find it as being in the same vein as Black Moor manor. So, I think you can go with that too.
One word of advice, you should always remember using your in-game smartphone it will help you in the long run. Keep calling your friends and acquaintances with updates and use your journal to remember the clues. Try to solve as many puzzles as you can without walkthrough. It will make your experience really enjoyable.

I haven't played even half of them yet, but they're rightfully considered one of the best HOG franchises in recent years.
The fact that they never get discounted a lot during Steam Sales (nevermind getting bundled outside Steam), makes the Big Fish version of the Nancy Drew series quite enticing for me and hopefully other Hidden Object players.
To partially answer your question, I've enjoyed "Midnight in Salem" on Steam, it's one of the few in that series that I already own on that platform and it's also the most recently released.

It's actually both. If it gets enough use within its time limit you'll have the notification about the code already having been used. If the timer expires you get a notification about the code having expired.
I think it was either 2 weeks for expiration date or 30 use. Again I am not sure about these numbers but I remember reading them somewhere (I doubt that was a trustworthy source though). These might have been reduced by Big Fish.
