I have finished Fire Emblem on 3DS at least three times now (and played a bit of the Fire Emblems on the Gameboy). The games are great and all, but I really want to venture to new game series. So, does anyone have a suggestion for a game with (almost) the same turn-based tactic formula, but with a fresh story?

Disclaimer: Sorry for any bad grammar or spelling

Edit: Wow, I am really blown away by this community. never have I thought that my first thread would gather so much attention.
I had a spare key of this so I thought giving it to you guys and gals :D

Shadowrun, Agarest, XCOM, Banner Saga, Expeditions: Conquistador, Divinity: Original Sin, Wasteland 2, King's Bounty...

There's plenty of turn-based games on Steam

Thanks for the suggestions! I will probably get some of the games you suggested in the next steam sale, they look really interesting!

for heroes 6&7 you need both uplay and steam (or you can not use steam, uplay is a must)
4+5 can be on steam only
1 2 3 have no idea. only had them on dos :) don't get the HoMM3 HD. it's crap. start with 5

Best choice for Heroes of Might and Magic is GOG.
It's DRM-free and Complete edition with a relatively cheap price. Also the best in the whole series, although the graphics are a bit lacking.

I thought the Shining Force games were only JPRG (like final fantasy) They look really like the old-school fire emblem and i surely will check them out! (one day :D)

Shining Force is more like Final Fantasy Tactics, but that's selling it short.
Where FFT is based around overall setup and terrain management, SF games were based around character/team building and long-term strategizing.
They- along with Ogre Battle games- really were the big influences on later tactical-RPG games.

Fair warning, Shining Force games are tougher than most later tactical games :)
They're pretty low on story elements, as well, though they do have some secrets to find, and some distinct stages.

And, y'know- great as they are, the early games are still going to be somewhat dated, now. :/

Later Shining Force games (past the first two) also changed up things a lot, so there's a lot of hit-and-miss and subjective elements to if you'll like them or not.

Also, you might want to give Card Hunter a go- it's free to play [with no pay to win elements], with amazing devs, and super fun :)

Rime Berta comes to mind, though it's not as intense as Fire Emblem and less high stakes. Still an interesting tactical RPG. Agarest also seems similar, along with the Shadowrun games on Steam.

I have never seen something with the same art style as Rime Berta, it does looks interesting though. Thanks for the suggestion!

Telepath Tactics looks really interesting, and the story seems quite unique (raptors and insects!? lol) I will keep that game in mind. Highlands doesn't really look like something I would enjoy (the art style mainly). Still, thanks for the suggestions.

I would say that buying a 3DS for Fire Emblem would be worth it (atleast, if you like the GBA ones). I have wanted to try Civilization for a while now, it really isn't like Fire Emblem, but looks interesting. I did try the Total Wars series, but I could just not play it. I don't know the reason, but the fact that I played a pretty old Total War( I think it was Medieval: Total War) might have caused my lack of interest to the games. And of course thank you for your comment and your suggestions.

This game looks quite like Fire Emblem. I've never played it though, I don't know if it's good.

Yeah, the game looks pretty cool. The story is what stands out the most to me. It also looks like it has some rock solid gameplay to add to the nice things this game has. Thanks for the suggestion

This game is so good. I played it, played it quite some time. The art style is probably the best I have seen in a long period of time, the story is really interesting and the game has great turn based gameplay elements. Too bad I got stuck at a part of the game :/
It's really not Fire Emblem, but a really good game on it's own

Nothing really beats Fire Emblem, too bad most of them never get translated.

EDIT: Don't know if you have any other consoles, but if you do try the Disgaea games.

I sadly don't have a Playstation. ;_; Managing 2 consoles (3DS and Wii U) and a PC is pretty though already. I might buy one in the future, but that won't be really soon

Edit: apparently, some of the DIsgaea games are on Nintendo DS. I will check them out then.

I don't really like Emulators, I might be the only one, but I won't risk downloading roms and get a virus, Maybe I will try it if I do a bit more research in emulators and ROM sites.

They have already recommended tons of good games, I just have 2 things to add:

  1. Try FTL: Faster Than Light, it's not turn based but you can pause at any time and it's just a plain AMAZING tactical game.
  2. KINGDOM RUSH is an amazing game, I adore it, people should join and on behalf of all I thank you for the great gift.

FTL is a really good game. I love roguelike and tactical games so I will pick that up one day.
Kingdom Rush is also pretty good, I really want to play it but i never have time to play it. D:

I can only think of a single game that fits the description, and it has already been mentioned (Telepath Tactics). Most other SPRGs (or more correctly TRPGs) of that general type lack the defining trait of Fire Emblem: Permadeath.

That said, depending on what you're after, the following games might be of interest to you (as I don't know quite what parts of Fire Emblem you really liked, I'll just throw a wide net with my recommendations):
Shining Force 1 & 2
Jagged Alliance 2
Expedition Conquistadors
Battle for Wesnoth (free, but not on steam)
Blackguards
X-com
Wasteland 2
Gorky 17
Silent Storm
The Banner Saga

That's a big list of games, thanks for the suggestions. Battle for Wesnoth looks really interesting (and it's free, what is to lose?).
Gorky 17 really appeals to me, the game looks like final fantasy 7 so that is a plus for me! Silent storm also looks very cool, I love the time period the game is based on (namely WWII)

If you end up enjoying Silent Storm, check out Hammer & Sickle. It's sadly not on steam, but it's part of the same universe and realtively similar in terms of gameplay. It's incredibly hard though.
